so am posting here because I’ve tried on other threads ( keep getting moved). In light of the last few days and what we’re learning. Testing on animals/ Beagles in the UK. I’m feeling heartbroken and have been so unaware. Anyone else?

I think the comments that respond almost with a ‘blanket’ life saving/ meds response are using cognitive dissonance. That it’s an easy way to solve the uncomfortable truth and to justify choices/ way we live and then turn a blind eye. Like so many issues, there’s ‘messiness’ and without campaigns and holding people responsible to regulations, change doesn’t happen.
Look at Temple Gradin and her work for example on humane livestock slaughter. If nothing else it’s so interesting and how she used her neurodiversity for great change.

How am I using cognitive dissonance?

I know EXACTLY what happens on a chicken farm. In a chicken house. I know how calves are reared. I KNOW what happens.

I grew up with a farming family and worked the abbatoir in the summer after my a levels.

how is it cognitive dissonance?

You’re kind of highlighting what is so abhorrent about animal testing. That you can’t imagine anyone willingly undergoing it. But it’s ok to force and breed sentient animals for the purpose? I mean if you’re ok with that, that’s your moral choice and just say that. But presenting it as ‘we have to do it to animals because humans wouldn’t agree’ is pretty weird.

Arguably a necessary evil for cancer or other life saving medications. Much harder to justify for other drugs.

Would you allow it for pain relieving drugs? For blood pressure medications? For anti depressants? Hrt? Laxatives?

I’m not suggesting people don’t take their meds. I’m saying the practices are cruel and we need to create more awareness. I can shop differently now, more mindfully. And help reduce demand for products/ brands unnecessarily testing or marketed and sold in China for example.

I think posters calling me naive are naive themselves -that they think they are ‘all knowing.’ I don’t think they realise themselves the full extent.

I try to avoid products that have been shipped miles, buy local where I can. I eat mostly vegetarian, have meat maybe once a week.

I already said I don’t buy cosmetics tested on animals?

AngryHerring · 23/04/2026 10:44

you'll be volunteering then? There is a reason that there isn't human testing in this way - much as we find it distressing and distasteful - how are you going to find healthy humans who will volunteer to be tested on, killed and then a post mortem so we can see if there was damage or not?

You'll be first in line for that? or will it be prisoners? or the poor and destitute who see no other way of making a bit of cash?

Also, the abuses and intensification of animal farming has been incremental. Added to which, there is a huge marketing effort to portray e.g. happy cows in fields, delighted to have had their calves taken away so that they can “give” their milk to their darling humans.

The idea that hens that are not in battery farms lead happy, sunny, clucking spacious lives is active misinformation.

And darling little lambs are eaten.

Pretty much every bit of advertising related to animal products that is on supermarket shelves is deception. I don’t blame people for not knowing that, but I am appalled that, once informed, many people are indifferent.

Agree

@theyhavenovoice I don’t buy cosmetics tested on animals. However, I have to take a swathe of medication every day to keep me alive and reduce my pain levels. Afaik all medications are tested on animals. What do you suggest I do?

Yes me too. Once youve seen or heard something upsetting and disturbing, you can't unsee or unhear it. But there's a real hardness in society nowadays, so we could be a dying breed.

I don't think saying "you're naive/silly/stupid for not knowing about this before, been around for ages etc"

Of course it has been around, of course people were aware of it, etc etc

But surely it's better to say "well done for realising the impact (and presumably preparing to get involved)" rather than "you're late you idiot"

Plenty of people have a realisation or reckoning of things at all different times. That's ok.

This is a really poor example/comparison. But I love classical music.
When someone (tentatively) says "So I listened to some thing called "Chopin" and I don't know much about it but it was kind of nice? Classical music is kind of cool no?..."

I say "oh yes! there's so much more to listen to, come in I am so pleased you're here"
not
"classical music has been there the whole time you idiot. what were you listening to before?? drake?"

As I say - very clumsy example and I am not comparing listening to Drake to Animal Testing, (!!!) but do you see what I mean? People discover things all the time having known they were there, it doesn't mean they care any less when they (eventually) have a moment?

@TheGoldenOwl
The technology for the COVID vaccines had been in process for years. It wasn't a case of starting from scratch.

Lets be clear, I would be very happy if there never had to be any more animal testing. It is currently a legal requirement that pharma companies cannot dip out of. Every year, there are advances, but science and progress take time. It does not take much imagination to think of the problems it would cause if we just dropped it all overnight, without fully validated alternatives in place. In silico testing and AI modelling is bringing things forwards at pace, but does not remove all risk of off target, unanticipated side effects.

That’s not true re cosmetics. We all need to get our facts straight. And learn more.
not offended by the naivety comment btw

This issue is layered/ messy. It’s not a simple as saying if you take a medication or aren’t vegan you can’t be shocked at the practices that are cruel and wish there were other options. My naivety is based on the footage I’ve seen . I did not know.

Blimms · 23/04/2026 12:59

Those posters who think it is never justified, if your child needed life saving medication which had been tested on animals, would you refuse that medication?

theyhavenovoice · 23/04/2026 12:58

HostaCentral · 23/04/2026 12:27

OP you have been very naive up to this point then. Animal testing has been around forever. Fortunately things like cosmetics are now predominently not animal tested, but you could argue, that is off the back of the ingredients already being tested long ago.

Pharmaceuticals have all been tested on animals. Alternatives are coming, and many pharma companies strive to use animals as little as possible. Human trials are obviously a thing, and many altruistic people, often pharma and research folk, step up and test drugs on themselves. Thank God for them.

Would you put yourself forward for a trial OP??

"Every single medicine has been through animal testing, whether it is for humans or animals (what should medicines for pets be tested on?). I hope all those who are opposed to it remember their position when it is they or their family member who is dying and they decline anything which has been tested on animals."

@RedWineCupcakes I see what you're saying but

It's perfectly ok to accept the advances that have happened, because they have happened and there is nothing we can do about that. Those animals have suffered and are gone. And at the same time say "but this way of doing things needs to stop. we have alternatives, we need to use them (and accept the additional cost) or develop them quicker."

Look what happened in COVID when the entire medical world threw their weight behind something. We can do it surely?

ThisHazelPombear · 23/04/2026 12:46

It’s never justified.

They upset me for a long time those images. And I refrained from posting them on another board. But I thought the poster calling the article frothing needed to be corrected and called out for their dismissal of the article

Oh, me?
The DM article is specifically targeted at WLI, 80% + of which are used by women. If you cannot see their goal, which is more women shaming, more guilt tripping, then more fool you. The language they use is deliberately inflammatory to get exactly the reaction this thread has provoked.

I am surprised that it is news to so many that dogs and primates are used in pharmaceutical research. Do people live under rocks? Does no one recall all the animal righs protestors in UK trying to get Huntingdon shut down? Which resulted in the UK having both the highest animal welfare standards in the world at the time, as well as the toughest legislation against animal rights extremists (because digging up people's dead grannies is extremel).

Every single medicine has been through animal testing, whether it is for humans or animals (what should medicines for pets be tested on?). I hope all those who are opposed to it remember their position when it is they or their family member who is dying and they decline anything which has been tested on animals.

As for using human volunteers, as some are advocating for, if you pay people, you are buying their consent. Which most on MN appear to be opposed to. And generally only attracts the desperate/impoverished.

Will you be volunteering? Fine to volunteer helpless animals though??

Also you know the meaning of the word volunteer is the opposite of forced, yes?

Ni I won't be because I can accept that - for the next while - animal testing will exist.

I'm not happy about it and I will join any campaign that seriously wants to make, say, the beagles conditions much better.

Sometimes we have to accept that bad things are done in our names.
