AIBU to worry about being stranded in Sweden and cancelling girls trip? (Fuel concerns)

I am going on a long planned for trip to Stockholm with my girlfriends at the end of next week (3 days). I'm really worried that there might be issues coming back on the plane in terms of fuel shortage and I might get stranded. My DH thinks I'm being ridiculous and that it's more to do with the fact I don't like leaving our 6 year old for a weekend (it's true that I always really miss him when I'm away and if I'm being honest, don't love being a flight away! But this is probably ridiculous in itself) AIBU to be afraid I might get stranded and to cancel the trip? My friends are flying in from other airports so I could technically make up an excuse, though I don't like doing that

I returned from Cyprus last week after half term with DH and 9 y.o…. We had people asking if we’d cancel. It was very busy.

Everything is a risk, but on the balance of probabilities fuel shortage leaving you stranded isn’t a likely one.

Will be good for your son to be with his dad. Good for you also. Enjoy yourself.

I can provide some reassurance here. I work in this space. The fuel shortages noise is a myth of the media to some degree. Like anything the media takes a sliver of truth, then blows it out of proportion for clicks and likes - it’s how they make money now.

The reality is the airports get scheduled deliveries of fuel and these are agreed well in advance based on flights. There won’t be any sudden shutdowns but likely airlines may consolidate flights or cancel routes in advance so customers know. You won’t just fly out one week and suddenly there won’t be any fuel for you to get back. It just doesn’t work like that.

There really is nothing people should be overly concerned with. I’ve even had loads of customers going out to Cyprus taking advantage of the cheap flights at the moment. Get out there. Enjoy yourself!

Thank you so much. That's very reassuring!

Honestly.

FryingPam · 22/04/2026 09:34

By the time they fly you out, they’ll know whether or not they have fuel to fly you back. It’s just a weekend, not that much can change in three days and airlines do a bit of advance planning.

Isthisasillyquestion1 · 22/04/2026 09:27

Thank you all so much. You're right, I should just go. Also, me and DS go to see my parents (in a different country) every year for a couple of weeks without DH so we get a lot of time together whilst my DH gets very little daddy son time with him alone - you're probably right that it's good for them to be without me for a weekend!

I'd have a bit of sympathy if was at the height of summer. Not next week.

Please don't be a flake

Or a Ripple.

SabrinaThwaite · 21/04/2026 22:07

I think the point made by a previous poster about your DH and your son being able to enjoy a boys weekend is really important - much as you’re his mum and you’ll miss him, it’s important for DS to have that time with his dad.

Coconutter24 · 21/04/2026 21:54

Fuel supply in Sweden is stable. You will be fine

Pistachiocake · 21/04/2026 21:31

If you don't want to go, don't. There's no point being miserable/worried, and a lot of people don't want to leave their kids. Some do, yes. But there's nothing wrong with not going-I wouldn't want a friend coming with me if she wasn't going to enjoy herself fully.

ButterPiesAreGreat · 21/04/2026 21:29

You are being ridiculous. The worst airlines are likely to do is combine flights. But it’s very possible to get home by train and ferry even if it takes a bit longer or fly from a different airport. The airlines are responsible for getting you home.
The headlines are a bit scaremongering and I think you’re latching onto this to justify you not going due to your anxiety. Don’t let it. Tell it to bog off and go! Stockholm is amazing and I’m very jealous. We were there last year on a cruise and we didn’t get to do half the things I wanted to do.

grlwhowrites · 21/04/2026 20:31

In the nicest possible way, YABU. Your flight wouldn’t go ahead if there was a genuine concern from the airline about fuel. If you cancel this last minute, regardless of whatever lie/excuse you come up with, your friends will know the truth and it is damaging to relationships.

I have a friend who constantly cancels things at the last minute (not even holidays, but dinners, cinema trips, girls’ nights out, casual events all in the same city she lives in etc) and she comes out with all sorts of excuses but we all know it’s because she doesn’t want to leave her child. I don’t give her a hard time over it but it secretly does really wind me up and I do feel like I’ve lost a friend. Some of our mutual friends no longer bother with her because she’s so flaky now. She’s not a reliable friend anymore. She can’t be counted on. If you cancel this trip, that could be what happens with you.

I know it can be really hard to leave your DC, especially if you’re prone to anxiety/overthinking but it’s SO important to maintain your identity outside of motherhood - for yourself and your DC. Childfree, adults-only time with friends is a big part of achieving that and it’s good for the soul. Go and have the best time ever, be free, enjoy that wonderful city (would kill to go there!!) and try and switch off and live in the moment with your friends. They’ll appreciate it and it’ll do you the world of good, too.

Sensiblesal · 21/04/2026 20:31

for the good of your anxiety you need to go.

Stockholm is also a wonderful place to visit.

its probably also good for your son & you to have friendships & a life outside of being a mum.

your DH will enjoy solo bonding time with your son

TheSquareMile · 21/04/2026 20:11

Have you taken out travel insurance, OP?

Is it the fuel "shortage" or more you don't really want to leave your 6 yr old..im sure he/she will have a fab time with dad..pull up your Bridget Jones and have a fab time with your friends..

Beachwalker66 · 21/04/2026 19:02

Stockholm is fabulous.

I made a new years resolution last year to stop being such a flaky friend. I am ND and have form for agreeing to do things that I secretly know I will find overwhelming.

Rather than being flaky, I determined to split such decisions 50/50 between pushing myself to say yes to some things and then absolutely following through with those decisions. And the other 50% of offers get rejected now.

I don’t know why I thought it would be worse to say no than to say yes and then stress for months before saying no and letting people down.

It sounds to me like you really don’t want to go and hoped the fuel situation might be your get out of jail free card?

You are coming to my hometown (if it is Stockholm you are travelling to). Just to note, May 1st is a public holiday here and the night before is our bonfire night. Not sure which dates you will be here for (because you really should go). There's quite a lot of friendly political (socialist) demonstrations on the 1st, but they are mainly singing and dancing through the streets. No need to worry about a riot or violence.

I bloody love Stockholm ❤😁

@SwedishK you’ve just persuaded me to come and visit again.

Dear Lord, how do you survive?

Why so rude? Personally I would not risk it. The world is unpredictable at the moment . If lots of flights are cancelled there will be pressure on other forms of transport and delays . OP doesn't like being away from her child . I would feel the same. and would stay close.

Zanatdy · 21/04/2026 18:01

Chances of that are low. But don’t go if you really don’t want to. As long as you pay your share.

cestlavielife · 21/04/2026 17:58

It s sweden.if needs be you can come back by train and ferry.
Just go.

HeddaGarbled · 21/04/2026 17:56

I was listening to Simon Calder the other day and he’s relaxed about it all. He said if they do have to start cancelling flights, what they’ll do first is combine flights that aren’t full. So if there are 4 flights doing the same route one morning and they’re not full, they’ll cancel one, run three and the unlucky passengers will get a time change but still fly. This often happens anyway because it makes economic sense.

QuizzlyBears · 21/04/2026 17:41

You don’t want to go and you’re looking for an excuse not to.

princesspadam · 21/04/2026 17:33

Feelingworried26 · 21/04/2026 15:51

I wouldn't take a non essential flight at the moment with a young child at home.

Dear Lord, how do you survive?
