To think no one can SERIOUSLY want Starmer to go now, it’s media created instability designed to damage the UK.

trump, wars, Israel invading Lebanon, US mid terms…….

it would mental for Starmer to go and it’s a trap.

yabu - of course Starmer has to go, despite what is happening in the world right now.

yanbu - time to move on and deal with trump and the blatant manipulation of the media by Russia, right wing billionaire interests.

Keir Starmer feels like a puppet PM only in post as he was deemed the most acceptable face for centrist Brits to vote for but in so many instances he comes across as completely oblivious to what’s actually going on. I’ve never known of a government to have had so long in opposition to prepare and to make the job of governing look like such hard work. I’d love a general election asap and to vote this lot out. (FWIW if Keir did go and we didn’t have a general election, I think Darren Jones would be a reasonable replacement but it will likely be someone from the hard left- god help us all. Last comment, I’m not a fan of KS as PM but I do think he’s done a good job of reconnecting Britain on the international stage just domestically he’s been abysmal, as had RR.)

I think many people are saying that no none from any party would be better than Starmer even if it were possible for them to be prime minister at the moment.

That’s exactly what we’re saying. I shudder to think where we’d be if any of the opposition party leaders had been PM over the last couple of months. As they say, perfect is the enemy of good.

partmermaidpartplant · 19/04/2026 09:07

interesting ! I think the previous poster who said Starmer was boring and sensible had it right.

considering the car crash of recent Tory governments, Liz truss’s economic disaster and now she’s hanging out with Trump.

Labour has
green lit lots of new building projects
more wind farms
VAT on school fees
increased renters and workers protections
stayed out of the war !
closer ties with EU
increased defence spending after Tory party neglected the army forces.
reduced the ‘small boats’ - caused by farage and brexit by the way.

why don’t we hear about those things?

There's a lot of naivete on this thread.

It's not a case of can Starmer survive, it's a case of when will his MPs oust him.

The momentum at the moment is they want to get the local elections out of the way and then pounce.

Saying there's noone good enough to replace him and he therefore should stay suggests the party you're backing isn't that great.

Bringemout · 19/04/2026 05:50

Yeah, I’m worried he’ll be replaced by someone even shitter to be frank.

caringcarer · 19/04/2026 03:35

I'd love to see Starmer go. He's the worst ditherer. He's U turned 8 times. He makes consistently bad decisions like putting Lammy in charge of foreign affairs, like wanting to give awY the Chargos Islands then paying to rent them back, like putting RR as chancellor and then not sacking her when she was a proven liar. She is so addicted to lying she even lied about winning a chess competition. Starmer lies too. He was warned by several of his own party not go hire Mandy but he did it anyway. He even appointed him before waiting for vetting to take place. He is a huge liability and he needs to go.

MyJustCat · 19/04/2026 01:32

This is a joke right? I would happily walk over hot coals not to have that lying idiot in charge.

I’m pissed off at Starmer for being such a terrible politician. He’s so bad at politics and just so unappealing. Sure you could blame some of that on the media but he grew up in this country and should know what the media is like. It’s just dumb not to be aware of how stories are put out there. He’s only got himself to blame for most of them, I wish he was a bit more savvy as I do agree that there’s no one obvious who is better and I find some of the other parties very unappealing.

I don't think there's anything he could do, he could perform bloody miracles and the right wing media would present it as a disaster.

Let's be honest the cards are stacked against him no matter what he does.

Blimms · 18/04/2026 14:46

Are you saying that you think the British media want to damage the U.K.?
Do you not think turning a blind eye to people who are friends with rapists has something to do with it?

The British gutter press think of politics as a spectator sport that coincidentally sells their rags for them as long as they can keep the populace buying. They don't care about the impact of political instability or the policies of different parties on ordinary people. They are well cushioned from reality.

I said living memory. I’m old and even I don’t have political memories of 1966.

You do know that living memory doesn't mean your personal living memory? There are many people much older than you are (more than a quarter of a century older, some of them). It's in their living memory. 1966 is in my parents' living memory too.

BIossomtoes · 18/04/2026 20:27

NoWordForFluffy · 18/04/2026 17:39

Actually, I just fact checked this. You're wrong.

Sorry didn’t mean to quote @Blimms . My reply was for the thread in general. Long day 😅

soundsys · 18/04/2026 20:00

Agreed. I’m no fan of Starmer but really not the time! I mean, what we get Wes Streeting?! I’m not convinced that’s going to make anything any better!

Clavinova · 18/04/2026 19:57

nearlylovemyusername · 18/04/2026 17:55

Who out of the current lot can be better though?
Rayner? Wes? BP? they are even scarier then Starmer

I think Yvette Cooper could easily replace Starmer. As Foreign Secretary she is up to speed with foreign affairs, recent experience as Home Secretary, plus she has past economic experience - former Chief Secretary to the Treasury under Gordon Brown, previously worked as chief economics correspondent for The Independent before entering politics.

He has 403 Labour MPs. He’s not failed to get any policies through parliament. He’s not failed to hold cabinet together.

Him not being popular with people who didn’t vote for him/Labour in the first place is a cheap excuse to get him to go.

It’s not him being unpopular that’s the problem. It’s all the years he sat on the opposition benches demanding various Tories resign for different things but when he’s in charge it’s everyone else’s fault and he’s constantly got excuses. His past tweets always resurface and show his hypocrisy.

MyLimeGuide · 18/04/2026 19:48

I hope Starmer stays. Because he is so unbelievably useless there is more chance of Labour not getting re elected at the next GE.

Welfare reform?

Keir Starmer has been forced to abandon the central plank of his welfare bill to get it past its first Commons hurdle...

I think this labour government is trying to think long term. I have never, ever had so many government consultations to respond to (curriculum review, SEND review, speech therapy review, social care review, neurodiversity task and finish group, and so on) which makes me think that they actually want to find out from people doing the jobs what works and what doesn't. This of course means that they look indecisive as things take time, but the new SEND review is largely really positive and the government has put their money where their mouth is - eg in our LA we will get around 5 million extra to support putting policies into place. After Tory austerity and swathing cuts to LA services it feels hopeful, for a change, in the education sector. And it's a poison bloody chalice of course, but I am impressed. And very relieved that we aren't sending our young men to Iran to fight Trump's war.

I think we need to give this lot a full term. They had to start with the country in such a piteous position after Brexit and COVID.

Starmer's going to go either now or after their May local election results which are going to be appauling.
Maybe the back benchers have a decision to make about what is better for them, to hang on to useless Starmer and have poll results down or freshen it up before then with a new leader.

There is not enough time to change leader before May 7.

Atleastthedoglikesme · 18/04/2026 19:23

LlynTegid · 18/04/2026 14:52

Almost two-thirds of those who voted in the last general election did not want him in the first place.

As for replacing a Prime Minister when there is a war overseas, it would not be the first. Margaret Thatcher being replaced by John Major is an example.

I don't think the likely Labour replacement at this time would be any better.

I recollect having May, then Johnson, then Truss, then Sunak foist upon me as a prime minister as a result purely of the votes of a few thousand Tory party members. Yes May and Johnson subsequently won elections but only as sitting prime ministers.

No new leader is going to rehabilitate the Labour Party at this stage. Especially considering the available candidates.

I think he’s doing a decent job, really don’t get all the flak he’s subjected to.
