AIBU, Is my neighbour a CF?

Earlier this week my NDN knocked on our door to advise he was having some landscaping work done, and the workers would be spraying the garden with weedkiller. We have a cat that sometimes goes in the garden so he was letting us know so we could keep cat indoors.

I came home from work today to find a portaloo with the landscapers name on, on my land right up against my house. We are detached and have a strip of lawn between our houses then I have some paving (basically a path that goes nowhere) and a fence with no gate, as our access is at other side. The portaloo is sited on my side, and gives easy access to their gate so the workers can get in and out.

I'm rather bemused, if I was going to contract a company who were bringing their own loo:
A) I would find somewhere on my own plot to put it
B) if a) was not possible I would approach my neighbours and ask them very nicely if I could put a loo on their land

AIBU to expect that people don't put toilets on other people's land? Are my neighbours CF?

It's only a great outcome if it's been moved onto their property today...

StormGazing · 18/04/2026 15:39

I hope they move it now you’ve made them aware

Hardly surprising. My brother allowed his builders, plumber and electricians to use his indoor toilet when he was having renovations done. At the time he had a job where he worked for 6 weeks on and 6 weeks off in Colombia so he wasn't always around to keep an eye on them.

He came back exhausted after a very difficult 6 weeks and a challenging and delayed journey, let himself in at the front door and was assailed by sewage stink. His downstairs toilet was full to the absolute brim with floating turds and loads of toilet paper, one of the two upstairs toilets was also blocked, all three toilets were absolutely filthy as were the towels. There were muddy footprints leading to the downstairs toilet and up the stairs to both the upstairs toilets.

Worst of all, they'd used every roll of toilet paper, leaving only the empty rolls, and when he went to the airing cupboard he found his stash of toilet paper had also gone, they'd been helping themselves and taking it home with them.

When he phoned to complain the builder blamed the plumbers and electricians, and they in turn blamed the builders and the other trades. Nobody accepted responsibility, they didn't even agree to come and unblock and clean them or pay him for all the stolen toilet paper.

So it's not completely unreasonable to be reluctant to allow strangers to use your indoor plumbing.

mmm I wouldn't allow trades to access my house like that unless i knew them very well!

Bit weird that the neighbours actually thought that was part of their land though, and not yours. Glad they listened and are sorting it. That’s how neighbours should behave!

it can happen. A part of what looks like my front garden actually belongs to my neighbour. It doesn't show obviously on the Land Registry paperwork but we did know before we bought the house because of the fenceline dividing the back gardens. I cultivate it by their permission. We decided before we bought that if a subsequent neighbour didn't want to continue the agreement, then we could manage without it but they could not because the strip is very narrow and any roof/gutter access for them means that they have to put ladders or scaffolding on my part

Abitofalark · 18/04/2026 15:06

That's good that you've spoken to the neighbour and that she is doing something about it. If you didn't do anything the chances are that these landscapers would take further liberties around your property as it is a fairly substantial project and not just a day's work weeding and tidying.

@stichguru I see them everywhere for extensions being built, big landscaping jobs, seems nobody wants the workmen in their house 🙄

I've been round. I spoke to MrsNDN. I don't think had twigged the portaloo was on my land as it is next to their gate. When I pointed it out she was in a proper flap and was going to phone them straight awayto come and move it. I was very nice about it.

excellent! Just shows that people don't have to grin and bear it or put up with stuff.

Zonder · 18/04/2026 13:11

Excellent outcome. Well done OP.

If I came home to see a plastic shitbox placed on my path, near to my kitchen window it would not cross my mind to put up with it, no matter who my neighbours were or what they were like.

I cannot believe that anyone would wait even two seconds to go right over and ask for it to be moved.

And yes your neighbours are CF, presumably they have eyes and can see that THEIR workmen are going to be pissing and shitting next to YOUR kitchen window..and they haven't said anything?????

It really obviously is our land. It is touching my house and on the other side of the fence where the portaloo has been placed is my kitchen door.

Thanks for the responses, and don't worry, I'll try and keep it to the one thread, unless there is a blowtorch-related accident.

I'm going to go round to NDN as soon as it is a reasonable time. My starting point is that human beings are essentially reasonable and we've had no issues with them at all previously.

Have you been round? What did they say?

Ask them to move it. There must be somewhere they can put it on their own land.
My mum's neighbour was having a new fence and sent the workmen into my mum's garden so theirs didn't get messed up!! Nip this in the bud.

My late husband let the council put scaffolding in the back garden of our old house whilst they built a two-storey extension on the house rented by the NDN.

The house had been up for sale, but we had to take it off the market. However, it was empty so the builders obviously reckoned they had carte blanche.

It took a while for me to get the mess cleared up. The workmen removed the scaffolding, but left the slabs that that the scaffolding had rested on. They also filled our green bin with broken tiles.

I phoned the number on the card that was pushed through our door when the scaffolding went up. Whenever I got through to reception, "Bill" the gaffer was never available and never returned my calls.

In the end, I took photographs of the mess and sent a covering letter via recorded delivery to the Head of Building Services, stating that we weren't entrepreneurs - simply people who had been unable to sell their house. I also explained that we hadn't been able to monitor the work because of ill health. (DH was still recovering from open heart surgery and I was recovering from a bilateral foot operation and had been on crutches.)

I also reported Fife Council Building Dept to Fife Council Waste Management for fly tipping.

An ashen-faced bloke in a suit was on my doorstep next day.

ETA Ever since then, I've been wary of being "nice".

Whilst the contractors should have asked if they could put it there, it is a logical location so the tools and clear passage for work can take place.
What other places could the toilet be placed on neighbours land that you can suggest it's moved too.
I personally wouldn't be bothered as I know it would only be short term whilst work takes place however I would speak to the contractor to state the area around the toilet is to be cleaned when the toilet is removed

It's far too close to the OP's kitchen door. The contractor has to find an alternative.

godmum56 · 18/04/2026 12:10

BillieWiper · 18/04/2026 11:33

Yeah just tell them to move it. Just approach it like there was a mistake and that obviously the loo shouldn't be on your land, and point to the location where it looks like it could sensibly go?

If the neighbours literally did it on purpose and said put the loo against my neighbours property then yes they are CFs. But I don't really see why they'd do that?

It's more likely the contractors just put it there and neighbours are just kind of hoping you won't notice or care? Or they've not really noticed themselves? Which is thoughtless but not necessarily deliberate CFery.

again, why would you have to suggest an alternate placement? basically why would you care provided its off your property?

SusanChurchouse · 18/04/2026 11:48

The NDNs sound nice and considerate so I am guessing it’s the landscapers who have decided to thoughtlessly place it there for their convenience and the neighbours may be unaware. I’m continually surprised how little many tradespeople seem to pay no attention to boundary lines! Pretty much every time I have work done I have to ask them to move their vans out of other people’s parking spaces, they just seem to treat it as a free for all.

Same here unless they are people I know. Where I live my garages adjoin my neighbours garages and the houses face each other. Imagine a squared off U shape with houses making the uprights and the block of 4 garages as the bottom of the U. I used to work part time and came home one day to find my neighbour had workmen in who had parked their van in front of one of my garages and set uo a workshop in front of the other....benches, tools, materials, sawdust everywhere, the lot. I asked them what they were doing on my property and the boss said that they had been told it was fine as I would be out all day and he even asked if I could go out again. I made clear that that was not going to happen. Turns out my neighbour had waited in to see the workmen arrive and then gone off to work and had no notion of what they had done.
Either way though, portaloo needs to move quick smart.

getupdostuffgotobed · 18/04/2026 11:55

Hedgehogforshort · 17/04/2026 22:18

I would gaffa tape it shut so it cannot be used and tell the neighbour to move it pronto.

Most can be padlocked.

Yes it's in the wrong place - but I can see why it's been put there.

You could mention it but if it's only to be there for a few days I'd be tempted to leave it - but I still might have a word with them.

They are not that heavy and you could drag it across to their land.

This is a new build development, they have three loos in the house, and there's only two of them! Guessing they wanted the landscapers to be able to work on their garden whilst NDN are at work.

Im not cross, but I will be if the portaloo leaks slurry outside my kitchen door. It just seems so WEIRD.

We've not lived here that long and in the first few weeks we ended up taking parcels in a few times for NDN and they were so worried about bothering us they brought us a thank you card and a bottle of Rioja. Also, the fact that Mr NDN knocked to tell us they were spraying the garden but neglected to mention the portaloo is just weird.

Is there a chance NDN has been falsely told by company that they cleared it with you?

Is there anywhere else the portaloo company could have placed it? I would ask how long it will be there.. <3-4 days - week almost bearable..longer than that.. suggest relocation. Give an excuse that you are painting the fence and need access.. even if you have to buy paint and pretend to paint it. It will diplomatically relocate the problem.. without making it an issue.

Honestly why all the faff?
Where else it could be placed, not the OP's problem.
How long it will be there, again not the OP's problem.
No making excuses.
Its possible to be both polite and firm.

Funnywonder · 18/04/2026 09:55

I thought it stood for CF - CNT FACE*

Oh Jesus, I will ever be able to see that abbreviation without thinking this now🤣🤣🤣 (I think I prefer it …)

ThePelicansBriefs · 18/04/2026 09:33

Seeing as the neighbours have been nice in other ways, I'd just leave it. If they came around right now and asked if it was ok, would you say yes? If so, just leave it be.
Obviously if it was starting to cause any problems like damage or smell, you could approach them.
