Entitled spider in my kitchen

So this is mostly a rant about the spiders. I absolutely hate them.
My DC and I went away yesterday for overnight trip to visit my friend. Before we left, I checked everything is turned off, windows are closed etc. I noticed empty glass in my DD bedroom and I took it downstairs and left it by the sink. We got back this evening and after I cooked the dinner, I put everything in the dishwasher. Then I pick up the glass and there was a gigantic spider at the bottom and he spun a bit of the cobweb at the bottom of the glass. I swear he was so big, I could see his teeth or whatever you call them. What is he doing in my kitchen is the question I ask?! I thought the rule is, that massive house spiders live outside in the spring/summer and try to come inside the house in the autumn. But oh no! This asshole was prancing around my kitchen counter while I was gone. I don’t actually know if he was a male but I assume he was as he had the audacity to disturbed my peace in my own home😂

DH picked one up today and took it outside but it somehow crawled out of his hand and started walking up his sleeve. In the garden he shook it off but didn't see it land anywhere. A few minutes later, he thought he felt the spider inside his sleeve so took his shirt off, no sign of it and thought he was imagining it.

Half an hour later, the spider appeared crawling out of his collar! DD caught it and took it outside and this time, we definitely saw him leave. I need a lie down.

<< shudder >>

I had an empty cylindrical fish habitat under a counter in the kitchen. Picked it up not so long ago, and there was a huge spider in the bottom, also with a bit of web there along the side. I took the cylinder out and put it sideways on the grass and (with some encouragement/rolling) the spider stomped off (big enough to see quite easily on the grass).
I don't really want them in the house if I find them but felt so guilty because I kept thinking - it had sought out a pet habitat!

Oh no. It was begging to be adopted 😔

Notellinganyone · 17/04/2026 16:47

We had one lived in the hole that the sash cord in the window went through. He was called Avici!

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 17/04/2026 16:43

Hope you released him.

Supersimkin7 · 17/04/2026 16:40

Show the eight-legged one the hoover.

Gets rid of a manchild every time.

EyeLevelStick · 17/04/2026 16:39

I like spiders. I mean, I don’t want them on me, but happy for them to share our house as long as they don’t make too many webs. I had a really very impressive one in the corner of a doorway when we got back from holiday and I was too lazy to remove it left it there as a Halloween decoration.

I desperately want a gecko to live behind my fridge.

Urgh, they're so entitled

Fed up with the way their webs catch in my hair in the garden, which I know technically is their actual home, but still.

DyslexicPoster · 17/04/2026 15:38

I studied entomology as part of my Biology degree, so I'm OK with creepy crawlies ( but enjoy them more outside of my home).

I found a tomato stalk in the sink. Picked it up wondering when we last had a tomato with a stalk and had it within a foot of my face inspecting it.

One log popped out, then the entire thing sprung open like stiff plastic that wants to return to its flat natural state and ran up my arm. A giant house spider a good 3" big.

All I wanted to do was rock in the corner soothing myself for a hour afterwards.

The fact that I had it right up in my face and I didn't realise it was a spider was just so wrong. If I had known I wouldn't have picked it up in the first place with bare hands. Don't ask me why but I can pick them up outside. Not inside

Merula · 17/04/2026 15:29

Just let the poor thing go - in the garden if you can't cope with it in your house. I can't believe you are about to spray your house with hideous chemicals, rather than just being an adult about it.

He’s yours now- you have to name him.

I had a spider called Linda in my bathroom for ages, then one day she wasn’t there anymore and I really missed her!

We had Esmerelda who lived in our living room and would run across every evening. She disappeared, then Daughter of Esmerelda arrived some time after. We miss them 😀

Burn the house down.

Yep, it’s his house now, time to move on.

(I haven't seen a clothes moth in decades! Are they still a thing, then?)
OP - a bigger spider is likely to be a female, just sayin' 😉 🕷️ 🕸️

Numbers are increasing in the UK due to climate change.

Unfortunately most of our house has wool carpets so eradicating them is nigh on impossible, but I try to keep the numbers down.

To OP - I don't know about Indorex, but when I was a teenager my mum treated the house for fleas one summer. Turns out the house, and more specifically my bedroom, had a lot of woodlice. Which all died. I remember getting up to go to the loo in the middle of the night and the walking across a disturbingly crunchy floor in the dark. I have a phobia of dead woodlice now.

I used to be terrified of spiders. We had a huge one who lived behind our toilet cistern. He would come out at night then scurry back to hide again when we turned the light on.

I became really fond of him- not sure why. Mainly because I saw he was scared of me I think. We had him about 3 years. We were very sad when he eventually died (found him upside down on the floor).

They are more frightened of you. I know you know that and it doesn't really help, but even the big ones are so little.

(I'm Australian too, and not sure I could cope with a Home Hunstman... but in the UK they are much smaller).

italianlondongirl · 17/04/2026 13:48

Please just put him out in your garden. Don’t kill him

I had one called Frank who lived in the top corner of the diamond shaped window inside my front door. It's been about 2 years and I still wonder what made him leave.

House spiders live indoors all year. You just see them in autumn coz they come out to mate.
That lovely chap is part of your family 😄

That's true. These are really very fast (and very thick legged and hairy).
Swoosh from underneath one chair to another - it's like lightning!
😁

Thank you so much. I just purchased one online! It doesn’t say that it works on spiders but I will give it a go. Instructions says that carpets should be vacuumed for 7 consecutive days after treatment?! Did you do that? I don’t know if I have an energy to hoover the whole house every day for a week🫣

That's to hatch fleas.

Please don't flush him down the bog. He's done nothing to you.

You have spiders in your house. You've always got spiders in your house. They're excellent pest control.

And they will die if put outside.

Ormally · 17/04/2026 10:40

I've heard that the spindly spiders (named as 'hangers' by my youngest son) eat the big hairy ones but how do they catch them as they are so fast🤷

They do! They stalk them and then truss them up like a mummy. If they make a web they can usually do a thing where they vibrate really fast and move the web around (I think it also gives the impression there is something caught in it that might attract a big hairy, but it's not clear that it is their nemesis doing the vibrating).
(Edit - a lot of the time, I think they also leave the legs, which is horrifying to find)

ToadRage · 17/04/2026 10:38

I hate spiders too. Used to get them, huge ones, alot in my old flat. We don't get quite so many here we have mesh over the open windows in the summer to keep them out and keep the cat in. My husband thinks they come on through the air bricks, I'd rather they didnt come on at all. My brother used to catch them in a cup and put them outside.

Please rewind and explain properly. Why do you have a gecko behind your fridge? Where did it come from? Where do you live? What does it do all day? I need more info please

LOL, I live in Dominican Republic, there are geckos everywhere, but most do not take up residence behind fridges, Mine is named George and he chirps loudly several times a day, and occasionally he will run out and go up the cupboard where he will sunbathe for a while, before returning behind the fridge. I assume that he comes out at night to go mozzie hunting
