To ask why people insist on making calls using speakerphone when in a public place?

I mean aside from the obvious fact that it's highly irritating and inconsiderate to those around you, I don't understand the benefit. The sound is tinny, unpleasant and distorted, and you have to wave it in front of your face instead of simply holding it to your ear as we have done since Alexander Graham Bell were a lad.

I can see the point if you're at home, say cooking, and you pop it down on the worktop, or you're having a family chat with multiple people looking at the phone at the same time, but people on their own - on the bus, for example - I just don't get it.

I also hate it when other people put me on speakerphone - I find the resulting quality of sound uncomfortably unpleasant.

I'm in Italy at the moment and it's every bit as bad here.

Please explain, as it might help me to find it less annoying.

I would happily have a conversation with an actual person on a train eg if I see a friend, or travelling with family. I dont answer most calls I get if im on the train but if i have to, i try to end the call ASAP (and its never on speaker)
Im amazed that people put up with having to use speakerphone "because their phone is broken". If mine had that sort of fault id be getting it fixed or getting a new one.
Im amazed at the amount of info people give out at volume when on public transport (dob, credit card number, kids info, medical info etc)

I've never thought about this. I always speak on the phone using speakerphone whether I'm in the house sat down or doing something and when out and about anywhere. Never thought that anyone would be bothered. I don't get buses but I do it wherever else I go.

You’ve never thought about this? Really. Do you not see how selfish and inconsiderate you are. How were you brought up? To not ever give a toss about anyone else?

Robinbaby · 16/04/2026 17:37

I have to take calls from the general public and when I know I’m on speaker, I wish could terminate the call. I don’t agree to everyone hearing me speak.
It’s rude and some people look weird shouting what looks like to themselves. Bus journeys are the worst because they are normally having the loudest boring blood conversions.
But then I prefer to text with my phone on silent.

I used to do it as my phone was broke so I had to put it on speaker as it was too quiet when not on speaker.

I do it now if I'm in a really loud busy place and cant hear the person.

To be honest I really dont care what others think around me, Im busy and if I need to take a call and put it on speaker I will. To many people get up in arms about sweet FA now. People need to mind their own buisness and just get over it.

I just can't see how it's justifiable - selfish selfish selfish - I just think people who do this are twats and if they can't hear or phone us broken use headphones which is a less annoying alternative- shame on you Easterbumbum

So your response to anyone questioning your behaviour, even in an online forum, is basically aggression, selfishness, entitlement and ‘me first and fuck the rest of you’?

Now you say it though, I can totally see it’s not you that’s the problem, it’s everyone else.

I mean, you’ve got rights, haven’t you babes?

We seem to have ended up with a society largely devoid of basic manners and any sense of civic responsibility. The social contract is breaking down piece by piece before our very eyes.

This. Due to a whole load of different factors, there’s now a very obvious entitled, every person for themselves, ‘do-whatever-the-fuck-you-want-and-be-unnecessarily-aggressive-if challenged’ mentality absolutely everywhere in the uk. Which results in stuff like this becoming entirely normalised behaviour.

When it’s one twat on a train taking calls and playing TikToks out loud, other passengers might feel they can reasonably say something. When it’s every other fucker on the entire train, it’s reached a tipping point and there’s no going back - it’s a total waste of energy to comment and you’ll probably get a mouthful for your trouble.

What I find harder to understand is the adoption of antisocial and inconsiderate behaviour by people who should know better - there was a woman in her 70s in a waiting room the other day blaring out shite from her phone, and she’s far from the first older person I’ve seen doing the same. I do wonder if phone use has become a sort of insulated bubble for some people - they’re just in their own little world, almost like a car, and cease to register anyone beyond the screen.

JHound · 16/04/2026 17:01

It’s only ever trashy people you see doing this though. You see somebody doing this and you know immediately the kind of person they are and the kind of children they raise.

It’s an odd mix - strong opinions on public behaviour, very little grasp of either spelling or social awareness.

I think there’s a correlation being evidenced here. It’s always the same - no doubt you were one of those kids who ‘really didn’t care’ about education, either. Poor SPAG, loud opinions, and absolutely no consideration for anyone else.

I had an incident recently where I was staying in a hotel on a small Scottish island and was spending a few hours in the afternoon reading in the sunroom. A middle-aged man felt the need to have a work-related call on loudspeaker in the quiet room. His wife and children said nothing. When I asked him to take it as a normal call as I didn't want to listen to his work conversation whilst trying to relax, an American male of similar age also in the sunroom interjected to ask me, rudely: "is this a library?" 🤣he got short shrift but I genuinely don't understand, aside from issues of social etiquette, why you'd want to have strangers listen to your mundane conversation??

Attention seeking. 🙄🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Monty36 · 16/04/2026 16:39

It is a bit sad, in public. And attention seeking. It makes them feel important.

SpringAndSunshineIsHere · 16/04/2026 16:37

Because they are arseholes.

Exportall · 16/04/2026 16:35

ThePieceHall · 16/04/2026 15:26

Because they want everyone to hear them telling their bestie that a tin of beans in the Co-op is only 65p.

😂😂 Yep, ain't that the truth

Brantastic · 16/04/2026 16:34

Everyone seems to do this now, the holding your phone horizontally out in front of you as you're walking along, I haven't seen anyone holding it to their ear for ages! Agree i absolutely don't want to be on speaker in public

Bournetilly · 16/04/2026 16:31

My phone broke years ago so I’ve used speaker to make phone calls since then, out of habit.

I wouldn’t have a conversation in a busy/ public place (unless no one around to hear conversation). I’d ring them back.

Exportall · 16/04/2026 16:29

Also highly personal stuff, in aldi today a woman talking about her partners children, using names, talking about health and behaviour stuff, I could have been anyone, I live in a fairly small town and could have gleaned aan awful lot of highly personal information and passed it on to anyone, are they stupid? Also effing and blinding, it's like they think there's an invisible shield around them, I absolutely hate it, I rarely see a young person without the obligatory phone stuck in front of their mouth talking absolute shite, I long for end days, and the downfall of the Internet😂 it's ruined us as people, social contract completely gone, makes a miserable existence for us all when decency and respect for others is ignored.

smithers99 · 16/04/2026 16:18

If they're just walking down the road I couldn't care less. Would be annoying on public transport or in a restaurant though.

auserna · 16/04/2026 15:56

Please tell me where you live so I can move there.

I’m in a small town in Rutland. The downside might be the lack of amenities and crap public transport links.

familyissues12345 · 16/04/2026 16:15

Yes, or even worse - on video! I hate the idea that I’m wandering around a shop in the background of someone’s video call. I can understand if someone wants to show their mate something, but I’ve seen plenty who are just having a chat!

canuckup · 16/04/2026 16:14

Someone was doing this whilst waiting for the lift up to our offices the other week.

I heard her say to her colleague 'i'm speaking to my mother hahah'

🤔

Wtf. Why is she speaking to her mother on loudspeaker, as she's about to enter a lift, in a public place? Did the mother not say, FFS Annabelle, stop yapping to me and get to work?

I gave her the death stare, as one does.

Then, karma surely arrived, and she dropped her phone

Oh the schadenfreude

😂

Where on earth do you live that you never see this , do you leave your house?

Inconsiderate oiks are everywhere with their calls on speaker. Selfish behaviour and of course it's not because huge swathes of the population have broken phones or ear issues, they just don't care about anyone but themselves

I live in a small town. I don’t use public transport, I only go into the office twice a week which is in the middle of nowhere so I have to drive. I go out walking a lot but I’ve certainly never noticed anyone on speakerphone.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 16/04/2026 16:11

EasterBunBun11 · 16/04/2026 15:42

Because im not the one with a problem, if someone has a problem with me on the phone then they can move.

No I’ll just put loud punk on speakerphone next to you and drown it out. If you don’t like it - well- you can move.

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 16/04/2026 16:10

GrumpyCommuter · 16/04/2026 15:44

This drives me nuts.

I used to loudly ask why they are not using headphones, but this wasn’t very effective at shutting them up.

My current strategy when someone does this on the train is to record snippets and then play it back, loud. This is effective, and usually results in a lot of giggling from other irritated people in the carriage.

(Seriously: no one wants to listen to other people’s phone calls / videos / music. Just use headphones!)

That is genius. 😂

The other thing I've seen people say they've done is to start playing music or videos really loudly through their own phone so that the phone chatter or video watcher can no longer hear whatever it is they are listening to. Then look them straight in the face while they look up at you, bewildered and apalled at your behaviour, with a 'yes, and?' look on your face.

And then a passive aggressive 'Oh...you mean this is intrusive and annoying for you and you'd like me to stop? But why on earth should I? You could simply move elsewhere.'
