How did you know about the name change?

@Funnywonder i imagine that poster did an advanced search on the username - no posting history in this case would suggest a name change as opposed to a new account.

LifeOnTheVeg · 16/04/2026 13:48

Seriously, love, you're not at the Oscars, nobody needed your speech

Quite! It’s all a bit ā€œmain characterā€, the big announcements and rambling speeches.
What a ridiculous waste of time.
Just put your phone down and do something else if you don’t like this forum.

SummerFate · 16/04/2026 13:39

Seriously, love, you're not at the Oscars, nobody needed your speech.

It’s more British Soap Awards, I’d say.

XenaBallerina · 16/04/2026 12:45

So much on here taken to heart ā¤ļø

Flaming threads can just be scrolled past rather than analysed. You don't have to look at them all. Actually not enough hours in the day to do that anyway!
Dont click on subjects that trigger your low moods or leave them as soon as you realise.
Strangers don’t know the real you …. and certainly if there was anyone I really do know on here I’m unaware of it. XenaBallerina’s not the name on my correspondence at home!
I’m actually quite sad that some people’s mental health is adversely affected by website comments from people they’ve never met and won’t.
Life really is way too short.

On further reading of some of the flippant, needlessly caustic and competitive attempts to be the most bitchy / funny in their response to the OP, I’ve come to the conclusion that after 15yrs of being a Mumsnetter my relationship with Mumsnet now probably needs to come to an end.

For those early days of pregnancy and young child-rearing I found the majority of threads warm, wise, riotously funny, down-to-earth and supportive. A real sense of solidarity. Witty, bright, socially-conscious women, holding each others backs.

It’s sad but I think those days are long gone. I get that trends / demographics / speech patterns / aggression levels / communication trends change with the passage of time. And now this is a different place. Not a wrong place. Just different to the one that was my home and home to many of us from the 2010’s onwards.

I’m an old croc now (45), and I don’t use other SM so I’ve been kept sheltered from this new knives-out communication style, probably imported from other SM platforms and the general proliferation of hiding behind keyboards saying horrible things to anonymous other users. So this just seems alien to me.

I don’t think I’m a good fit for MN now. And it’s not a good fit for me or my emotional wellbeing. Seeing people (OP) being mocked by a huge group of people has really upset me but at least drawn a line in the sand.

I’m maintaining that line in the sand now by deleting my account with heavy heart. Thanks to all you amazing women who’ve tried to keep the old spirit alive (and have kept me alive at points).

ps: Fully prepared that my message will now also elicit a pile-on of mockery, sarcasm and incitements to ā€˜shut the door on your way out’. If it does, then proof that my decision was a sound one.

Seriously, love, you're not at the Oscars, nobody needed your speech. Glad you realised it was mock-worthy at least šŸ˜… I cannot emphasise enough that you leaving doesn't matter, nobody at all cares, you won't be missed and it doesn't matter how you feel. No lines are being drawn ffs you're just not posting on a website šŸ˜†

Just like nobody with a life cares about my comment and it doesn't matter on any actual, real level.

It's just a website. Move on. Ciao!

Oh, I'm sure I've seen people suggesting blocking someone! Maybe that's just for the people who pay to use MN? I admit I've not tried as I don't come across anyone I'd feel the need to block!

No, there's no blocking, paid or unpaid. I think you can block someone if they private message you, but that's it.

I’ve been around on here since 2010 and occasionally take longish breaks for my wellbeing. I’ve recently returned and am genuinely shocked at the online bullying, smart-assery and outright aggression & hostility of so many responses / posters. I’m really saddened people now feel they can talk to others in this caustic and heartless way.

I know I can be a bit frustrated and blunt sometimes but the nastiness and casual aggression I see / have been subject to is wild, compared to how people on here used to interact with each other.

It can make the difference between just about coping, and not coping.

I even feel nervous about posting this tbh, as I’m genuinely prepared for some nasty, hurtful and aggressive responses such as the OP has received on this thread. I’m feeling very traumatised from work tonight, and vulnerable in my own severe MH challenges, and aware that opening myself up for the really awful, snide, sarcastic ā€œyou do youā€ and ā€œgo awayā€ and ā€œbore offā€ and ā€œwhateverā€ and nasty emojis will probably make the difference to me tonight between going to bed feeling head and going to bed feeling woeful.

This is just my own experience / thoughts tho, please don’t shoot me down for sharing them šŸ™šŸ»

Posters have asked MNHQ for a 'block poster' function but MNHQ has thus far said No.

You can hide threads though, and whole boards. I have hidden the 'Sex' board, for example, as it's full of weird male fetishists who are very obviously sitting at a screen typing with just one hand iyswim. Absolutely revolting.

MoonWoman69 · 16/04/2026 11:12

Youlittlenightmare · 16/04/2026 10:46

There is, unfortunately, no blocking on this site. There definitely should be, but it's all about clicks, and if blocking was allowed the views would drop. I wouldn't notice, or care at all, if anyone blocked me, and it's pretty backwards really for any site not to allow that in this day and age.

If you have issues with some posters, I believe you can block them. But then it sounds like there's so many, you wouldn't see any posts at all if you did that!
I've been on here for 10 years or so and I have to agree, nasty and aggressive comments have taken over a lot of threads. You have to scroll through pages to pick out the 10% of sensible advice or debate. All people want to do is jump in and be bitchy. But then some of the posts are very goady, so it's hardly surprising sometimes!
And don't get me started on the armchair professionals! Jumping to conclusions when they have no idea and frightening the OPs to death!
But anyway, if it's winding you up to such an extent, then maybe it's best to just leave for the sake of your mental health.

Well I for one would! I'm too old in the tooth now to keep the peace if I think something isn't right! I say exactly what I want to say, via posts and if someone was stood in front of me! I agree though, a lot of people really wouldn't. Gotta love a keyboard warrior, not! šŸ™„

Yep, I have posted nothing on this site I wouldn't say straight to someone's face. I think some people are so terrified of being assertive that they can't even imagine lots of us are not.

Also, many who accuse others of being too aggro are in fact far worse, they wouldn't speak their mind or (heaven forfend!) raise their voice - but they are slyly, smilingly, viciously vituperative. I'd far rather be stabbed in the front than have a virulently "polite" insult levelled at me.

And the OP is here calling strangers slurs and insulting them, but thinks she's virtuous for doing so.

There is much hypocrisy amongst the "noice" classes.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/04/2026 10:42

thing is OP, I do understand how you feel but sadly this is life as it is - try x , you come back here thinking ā€˜whoa it’s a breath of fresh air’ - stuffed full of clearly very very negative people, massive amounts of racism ( lots of very racist and unrealistic older women too, not just American male knuckledraggers ) plus a fair old load of disillusioned younger people who think the world owes them a living for not doing much - the world has gone mad and at the moment feels unstable and out of control- that’s the issue. A lot of people feeling they need someone to blame it all on

Feelingworried26 · 16/04/2026 10:41

You definitely need to leave, OP, since being on here is driving you mad.
I'm still here because there are still many generous, witty, knowledgeable women sharing their knowledge and support. I try to look past the AI and deliberate provocation to find the gems.

MoonWoman69 · 16/04/2026 10:35

TiredDinosaur · 15/04/2026 23:53

I have thought the same. Fairly new to using MN and so many keyboard warriors that would not say the things on here in real life I can guarantee

Bye bye.

Soowww · 16/04/2026 09:53

Bush100 · 15/04/2026 23:58

No they wouldn’t. Don’t even get me started on the pregnancy/ conception boards where someone posts a photo of a very obvious evap line and there’s comment after comment congratulating šŸ™Œ 🄳 them. Then they do another test which has now come back negative and the poster believes they’ve had a miscarriage, all before they’ve missed their period. My grind here is with the relentless posters who can’t accept that a line on a pregnancy test doesn’t always mean a line and start dishing out false hope

As much as this thread is hilarious with the flouncing, I actually agree with this bit! 🤣

Youlittlenightmare · 16/04/2026 09:51

When is a flounce not a flounce? When the OP changes her name so she can keep scrolling and posting after throwing a tantrum. Like the OP who started this thread šŸ˜‡

liveforsummer · 16/04/2026 09:36

YABU to be unaffected by what a group of complete strangers type on a keyboard. I’m also unsure what outcome you expected. The people you describe won’t recognise themselves, nor care if they do. Mb is best approached with a sense of humour for such types. If your wellbeing is affected then it’s definitely best to leave

I don’t think OP is looking for attention I think she’s trying to make a point about how judgemental and nasty things can get on here. There seem to be some posters with real problems and vulnerabilities looking for help and other posters who are just on for amusement and to show off how witty and uncompromising they are. There’s an incompatibility. I think OP is hoping people will reflect. Thing is I think she’s wasting her time and it’s not likely to change. I find the forum very addictive and amusing but I definitely wouldn’t use it for anything serious, it’s not confidential either, it can be easier to spot a real life situation than you would think.

We don't know that is why OP has posted. Because OP hasn't said any of that. All OP has done is insult the site and its posters in a generic and belittling way, and be rude and negative to those who disagree.
IME people who do this are usually coming at it with the agenda of discrediting the site and the predominantly women users for their own reasons.
I strongly agree about the racism. But calling that out should be done on the threads and via reporting. Lumping racism in with telling a poster they think her test looks positive as an indication of how awful the women on here are, and scolding in such a goady way, just dilutes a valuable point.

It can be a snake pit and if it’s not your thing that’s fine. But I don’t see the point of telling everyone. It’s like the weekly ā€˜MN is shit’ posts.

Nobody is obliged to be here - if you don’t like it, move on šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Yeah, you’re right. I was really trying to warn anyone who’s unhappy and living a lot of their life online not to take MN too seriously.

Funnywonder · 16/04/2026 08:05

I agree that this place can be pretty toxic. A lot of the rudeness and aggression has seeped over from AIBU to other areas that were previously fairly safe. I think the threads asking for support are the absolute worst because, although there are often many helpful and supportive posts, they get drowned in a sea of nastiness, with side fights and huge pile ons. And then the poor OP disappears because they’re getting the complete opposite of what they were asking for. The whole internet is full of people you would never be friends with and Mumsnet is no different. Some of the posts I have read castigating people with disabilities, people on benefits, people with mental health problems, have left me in utter despair for the human race. I have a particular problem with the lack of understanding around anxiety, having personal experience of how debilitating it can be. Some of the worst comments come from people who say they have suffered with anxiety themselves. A bit like evangelical ex smokers.

But you shouldn’t see Mumsnet as a homogeneous group. ā€˜We’ aren’t out to get you. Personally I’m not part of any ā€˜we’ and nor are most. And announcing your departure will never go down well on herešŸ˜†
