How do clairvoyants know things??

Homer2 · 14/04/2026 13:45

I have never believed in this, I saw one once just for fun at my aunties house and she wasn’t great. She did say a few things that were accurate, but I put this down to being guesses or general vague things that would be relevant to the majority of people.

However, recently my friend went to one. She recently lost her dad and her partner. Without telling the clairvoyant anything, she knew how her partner died and what his name was. She mentioned my friends dad blowing kisses in a weird way, with the palm of his hand instead of his fingers, which is something he did used to do. How would she know these things??? I don’t honestly believe in it, but can’t understand how she’d know such specific things

i’ve just edited my previous post.

sorry it’s difficult as I am partially sighted and I’ve typed to much it does my eyes in.

of course I have free will. But something ares aren’t meant to be Bo matter how much you try and push them.

Ok, so more like a cosmic plan than a script?

How much free will do you think you have? Absolutely zero, or is it just that you believe some paths of life are just closed to you?
Have you been trying for your whole life to have a bacon sandwich for lunch but something bizarre always prevents you? Or have you been trying to make a big life change and failing, eg applying for a course in medicine as a mature student?

And if you decide to scratch your nose right now (go on do it, or maybe don't) is that because you can or because it is written so?

I have tried and tried and it’s been like a game of whack a mole.

So no, I don’t believe you can change your destiny.

You can believe you can change yours though, I’m not in control of what you think.

And there is no fucking point to life. I felt a lot freer an less stressed when I accepted that.

But I also wouldn’t move into a house that a medium told me too as I don’t belive in them and wouldn’t have seen one in the first place.

Yes, I believe that you can make changes in your life, improve it and live in a more fulfilled way.
That's why we have brains and intellect and agency. I respect and admire those who have pushed against their odds.
However, you don't, and you believe in pre destination, like the Parliament of the Saints. The Chosen.
So I suppose clairvoyancy does make sense with that set of beliefs.

okay, but I’m not saying it makes sense. I think it’s a load of crap. I don’t belive in it. I just believe that what ever happens, happens for a reason. You don’t - fabulous! We are all different.

I mean, I know it’s a load of crap. When I was struggling to find a job, I got one as a phone line tarot reader and text answer service for the company that does the Mystic Meg and Russell Grant phone lines.

I’d never seen a set of tarot card in my life before then, and I certainly have no psychic powers, but I did go to drama school, so I managed to pass the short test interview and got the job (I ended up making about £1 an hour when you broke it down, it’s a scam on both ends).

You tell people what they want to hear.

And I’m not saying I don’t belive we have no free will at all. I could walk out of my house now, go and buy a bag load of drugs off the estate and chose to live in a doorway.

I mean that sometimes you can try and try to go down a path and it’s knock back after knock back until you have to stop - and then you see that it wasn’t meant to be because something better occurs.

CurlewKate · 15/04/2026 08:46

Also, people who go to psychics of any sort are mostly going wanting a reading. And are predisposed to help the reader get it right. So the reader can say “Oh, I’ve got a Joan…is it Joan?” and you say “My mum’s neighbour was called Jean?” and the reader says “Yes-I’ve got Jean here” and by the time you leave, the reader has told you this thing she couldn’t possibly have known….

If, when presented with an explanation on the basic fundaments of how memory works - i.e. THE memory, everyone’s memory - you claim it doesn’t apply to you, then yes you are denying science.

Why is it, on this thread as well as generally, those who are so definitely convinced by their psychic experience, who bullishly reject every possible explanation - won’t even consider them - are the ones claiming to be open-minded?

It always happens on these kinds of threads, ditto the accusations of being ‘closed minded’, and the eternal misquotation of Hamlet.

I’m as open-minded as the average person. Show me credible, peer-reviewed evidence of the existence of the supernatural or life after death or precognition, and I will be delighted to see it — why wouldn’t I? It would rewrite our current ideas about reality. It would be really interesting. But until then, a random on the internet remembering what some ‘psychic’ said to her about Auntie Beryl’s brooch in 1985 or something a bit funny she might have seen as a child on the landing, isn’t going to convince anyone.

He 'knew' (sorry, that was the wrong word to use) that the girls had died very shortly after their abduction and hadn't 'run away', he described the assailant's physical appearance with chilling accuracy, he identified key alphabetic clues in various locations, could 'see' the view out of the house where they died and particular details of the deposition site, etc. I'm not a natural 'believer' in any of this, but all of this turned my head.

Kevin's book is well worth reading, by the way - there's a slightly more recent 'ten years on' version with an extra chapter at the end.

So, I'm guessing he told all this to the police so the murderer was apprehended?
I thought the police acted on witnesses and forensic evidence?.

Wow I'm surprised how many people are sceptical here. Of course there are charlatans who claim to be able to receive messages from the deceased, but that doesn't mean that there aren't people ot there who can tune in to different frequencies.
I've always been an ultra sensitive person and in my mid 30's, whilst lying in bed one morning in a very relaxed state, I suddenly felt my ears undergoing a weird sensation (like tuning into a radio station) and then I heard a male voice speaking to me. I was absolutely freaked out. This had never happened before and I was beyond shocked. It lasted about 5 seconds. I'm not schizophrenic lol. I don't regularly hear voices. It happened again about 3 years later. I was totally convinced after that that there is far more to this existence than we realise...

This is a very common phenomenon.
Look up hypnogogic and hypnopompic hallucinations.
Nothing even remotely woo about it.

I absolutely do not deny science , i work with science but i know how my own mind works and i know what my experience was , i could say so much more about it but choose not too.
I find it quite bizarre how some people are so closed off and refuse to believe that there may be more beyond what we know and even you can't deny how much we do not know.
As i said i believe that the vast majority of people who call themselves mediums are absolutely not and many are totally fraudulent , but there are some people who have 'something' i don't know what, why or how but they do.
Maybe sometime in your life someone like the person i experienced will cross your path and you may change your mind.
If it's me you were referring to i wasn't angry.

Right. So you have no agency at all? You can't change your future?
What's the point then? I believe that we make choices in life and guide our own destinies, learn from mistakes and manage the good with the bad.
So if a clairvoyant told me I'd move into a house with blue wallpaper, I'd think - only if that house was the right price and location for me.

There are no doubt some charlatans and there are others who are developing clairvoyancy / mediumship skills which might not be finely tuned yet. However there are some other people who have a natural gift to connect with spirit. When they give you a message which only you know and it is so precise that even our logical brain struggles to argue with it, you know for sure it’s spirit.

Yeah sure they do. While they take the money of vulnerable desperate people.

I don’t believe, but I do believe it’s mapped out.

There are SO many things I have tried to do in life, things that I wanted to do, believed they were for the best at the time and they have been weirdly blocked. They just didn’t work out no matter how hard I tried, everything turned to shit, didn’t work out, something awful happened. And then it turned out that it was for the best - it just wasn’t meant to be and that’s why it was so hard.

I believe that everything happens for a reason, even the awful stuff, and when your number is up, it’s up.

Right. So you have no agency at all? You can't change your future?

Genuine question for those who believe in clairvoyancy - do you think that the future is already mapped out, and that you can't make changes to it?

We are human and have free will to make changes. For example, I could have declined the rental house I was shown even though it exactly matched the clairvoyant’s description of somewhere I would live. I could have chosen something different. I see my destiny as a line in the sand. I can go off the line if I choose to but the line is still there.

Googling the person who makes a booking probably and Facebook stalking them. It's creepy and exploitative.

This.

Neighbour sees one on a regular basis. This clairvoyant charges £50 an hour and is the nosiest person around. Facebook is her friend.

It's all vague and general obvious stuff but suckers pay her but perhaps they take comfort from 'your mum is watching you and proud' and think hearing that is worth the money 💰

Please don’t be so patronising. I remember her words exactly. Did you even read my post? Absolutely NO-ONE knew of my termination. Cold reading was not a part in my particular experience.

I’ve told my kids that when I die, if they get sucked in to giving a medium money, if it’s real, I’ll prove it by giving my full name, national insurance number and last known address.

None of this wishy washy, “oh I’ve got a woman, maybe her name starts with a c…” nonsense.

ruffler45 · 15/04/2026 06:54

Simple answer is they dont. There is one that comes regularly to a pub near us , you have to book appointments to see her, surely if they were that good they would know who and when they were turning up?

I thought alot of it was cold reading and clever guessing until a lady abroad did my friend's, impromptu for no fee & knew nothing about her. It was scarily accurate with bizarre details she couldnt have known. My freind turned pale & was a bit shaken! She offered to do mine but I was a bit freaked out & declined.

What were the bizarre details?
