How do clairvoyants know things??

Homer2 · 14/04/2026 13:45

I have never believed in this, I saw one once just for fun at my aunties house and she wasn’t great. She did say a few things that were accurate, but I put this down to being guesses or general vague things that would be relevant to the majority of people.

However, recently my friend went to one. She recently lost her dad and her partner. Without telling the clairvoyant anything, she knew how her partner died and what his name was. She mentioned my friends dad blowing kisses in a weird way, with the palm of his hand instead of his fingers, which is something he did used to do. How would she know these things??? I don’t honestly believe in it, but can’t understand how she’d know such specific things

I think some people are very perceptive, and that this can be misconstrued
The best example I can think of is....

Sometimes when you are driving, you see a car and suddenly think it's going to do something unpredictable eg suddenly stop, pull out on you, jump a light.

You can't name it or identifying it, but your brain is amazing often at picking all sorts of signals like an unusual road position, the way the driver is holding eye contact etc.

I work in nhs, and lots of staff develop a sixth sense about stuff. The patient is clearly giving off something like a subtle change of colour, smell etc that you can't identify but suddenly get a bad feeling. There are lots of staff who will keep people beyond what seems reasonable with normal odds because it just doesn't feel right and usually they are right

I'm normally very good at identifying pregnancy really early, I don't know why but sometimes people just really clearly seem pregnant. I think its sometimes peoples features change, they guard their stomach/change posture subconsciously. I've felt it, before people themselves have known and often before announcements. I'm not psychic, I'm just like one of those dogs that can detect blood sugars!

Our gut feelings are often based on cognition we don't know about

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 15/04/2026 11:24

I’m totally in the fence with this. I do sometimes get a very good hunch about stuff and it happens. I think It’s because I’m very good at reading situations, mainly because I notice clues and have an excellent memory.

I’ve seen enough about cold readings though to assume that’s how must of it works.

This is a very common phenomenon.
Look up hypnogogic and hypnopompic hallucinations.
Nothing even remotely woo about it.

Edited

Thanks I'll look that up:)

I do think that the fact that you were lying in bed in a very relaxed state might go a long way to explaining what happened here.

Ha, yes. that's what my DH says aswell, but it was so profound and real and not a dream and unless it happens to you personally I'm unable to convince you....not that I'm trying to....it's just my experience that's all

What were the bizarre details?

My friend was a stripper aeons ago when young and broke, the clairvoyant mentioned her stage name, the clubs she worked in with descriptions of cheap tawdry decor, described crowds of horrible men whistling and whooping. Described her son who had died of a sars type virus in the 80s & named him. That my friend only liked melted ice cream.

What did this male voice say to you?
Has he spoken to you since?

Ha.....well, I wish now that I had carefully listened to the voice, but in the moment I was so shocked and a bit frightened in case he was saying something I didn't want to hear that I kind of did the whole "la la la I'm not listening thing" and zoned out the voice, even though I could still hear him talking to me in the background. It was just too much for me in the moment....but it only lasted maybe 5 or 6 seconds.

About 3 years later my dad passed away and I went through a period of deep grief....I remember taking myself off to bed one weekend afternoon...and again I managed to get in to a very relaxed state, kind of meditative, thinking about happier times with my dad....I remember getting to this ultra peaceful place and must've stopped breathing or something (??) because again I heard my ears make a high pitched sound and also felt a plucking feeling iny ears as if they were turning in to a different frequency....and then I heard (the same?) male voice clearly saying 'breathe"....I thought, what? Am I not breathing? I came back to full consciousness and could hear myself gasp for breath and thought, wow, maybe I did stop breathing! (But I hadn't been aware that I had). I feel like the voice is my guardian angel and he saved me in that moment and that it wasn't yet my time to go...
People might think I'm crazy, but that is my experience

That was 10 yes ago but those 2 experiences were so profound to me that I truly believe there is more to this existence than we understand

Call it what you want, I don’t call it anything.
It just is what it is, I don’t over think it.

For example. We live in a shithole of a place. We didn’t want our daughter going to secondary school here. So we put our house on the market and it was just diabolical. Five sales fell through for the most bizzare reasons.

Then, she got a place at a school that she really shouldn’t have, In another town . It’s one of the best schools in the country.

Had we moved, it wouldn’t have happened. We would have been nowhere near it and we would have been in serious debt (we live in a shithole as we have a minimal mortgage).

Something was keeping us here for a reason.

So while we had a year of stress trying to move, banging our heads against a brick wall with issue after issue. ultimately, it wasn’t the right thing to do and now we are in a great financial position and dd is at an amazing school (well gloss over the town we live in being a hell hole).

Ive had that a few times in life. We went through something horrific as a family last year. I don’t know how we got through it. At the time, I would have given anything for it not to be happening.

i’ve been writing for 25 years and I’ve never got anywhere. But this - a producer I know from way back took it on. I now have agent representation and it’s being turned into a screenplay for TV. It’s going to change the life of my family (and yes, we’ll move!)

So while that horrific thing happened, well, it was meant to for this.

Oh and don’t worry - I can’t see well but I take far more care writing that I do posting on forums.

I think you should give yourself much more credit for your own strength and tenacity. It happened because of you. What you did.

PrudenceDictates · 15/04/2026 10:36

A good medium or clairvoyant

That’s quite the oxymoronic phrase!

Itwasallyellow2 · 15/04/2026 10:26

mypantsareonfire · 15/04/2026 07:54

I have tried and tried and it’s been like a game of whack a mole.

So no, I don’t believe you can change your destiny.

You can believe you can change yours though, I’m not in control of what you think.

And there is no fucking point to life. I felt a lot freer an less stressed when I accepted that.

But I also wouldn’t move into a house that a medium told me too as I don’t belive in them and wouldn’t have seen one in the first place.

Edited

A good medium or clairvoyant would never tell you what to do. I was told about a house I would look at - very detailed description indeed. I was also told I would be offered a specific job completely out of the blue - not something in my current field and not something I had specifically applied for. It happened. She never said that I should live in the house or that I should take the job, only that it would be something I would be presented with. We have free will to do as we choose.

I find it hard to believe that she knew women were pregnant before they knew themselves.

I can tell my husband or children are becoming ill before they know it themselves… and dogs have been trained to detect certain diseases or warn of drops in blood sugar levels in diabetics, among other things, so I find this the least extraordinary claim on here.
Perhaps this lady was able to detect… something. By smell or other means.

Nothing woo though, of course!

The people who are pretty sure the psychic WAS genuine: when you were being read, are you sure you did not give any verbal clues? Did the psychics give information fluently, or keep guessing until they hit on the right answer?

With my experience she spoke fluently ,there were no 'do you know a John,Janet etc'
I sat quietly opposite her in her home with my arms relaxed on the chairs arm rests , i gave her nothing at all.
She spoke to me as if she were reading from a book , no hesitation ,no questions .
Of course i didn't know what my future would be at the time but what she did tell me happened in the sequence she told me , it was regarding my living mother and my late grandfather that convinced me that she was real .
Despite a pp saying i wouldn't be able to remember well i do , as if it were yesterday , it has always been a very clear memory for me , it was a special experience , i have never met anyone like her since but then i don't go searching.
Since childhood i have felt comfortable that there is more to come than this life , i'm not religious and have never been influenced by family but too many living people have too many 'experiences' connected to dead people to dismiss that there is more .
We will never reach a conclusion to this argument though , we just have to wait and see what happens when its our turn !

Weeelokthen · 15/04/2026 10:00

I think they are parasites who prey on the vulnerable, however, my ex ndn worked in a petrol station and had just returned to work after the death of her dh. A woman came in to pay and said "Jim says hi, wee muffin" and walked away. She stood there absolutely stunned, as that is what he called her. She had never seen this woman before or since.

OctopusFriend · 15/04/2026 09:59

I’ve been to 2. The first one, like I said upthread, knew a very specific detail which absolutely NO-ONE else knew - not even my mum, sister or work colleagues. I definitely didn’t give anything away. The first thing the medium said (aside from hello, sit down), was “you don’t need to speak, I don’t need to know anything”. I was a quiet 18 year old who struggled to speak at the best of times 😂 She began with describing clothes I used to wear as a child - which was accurate, could have been guessed, but would be a very bizarre lucky guess. I still just sat. Then she said the baby I had terminated was doing well in the spiritual world, and would not have survived the living world, so the termination was the best decision. I was floored. She talked fluently, never guessed or looked up for approval or denial. She didn’t want confirmation of what she was saying.

The second I went to was clearly a cold reader, said nothing specific to me at all, was completely different to the first medium.

Everyone will always have differing opinions on this subject, but no-one should be outright saying I, or others, categorically did not have this happen in the way I, or they, said it did, or that mine/their memories are not as I/they believe it to be.

I agree there are charlatans out there, but there are also some genuine.

Yes, indeed. Some entertainment. 🙁
Especially for vulnerable people.

But equally, it’s a lot of vulnerable people who work on them too. It’s shit pay.

OctopusFriend · 15/04/2026 09:45

It really is bollocks.

You tend to get the same people calling you again and again - they don’t often clock it’s the same reader, but you remember voices and stories and so they think you are amazing.

When you text these numbers it’s even worse as every text you have ever sent, no matter who has answered it before, comes up on the screen. So you can scroll back, see what they have previously asked/been told and use that. So that’s why people think they are so accurate and amazing. It’s not at all. I could see what you had asked two years previously if you text from the same number.

But, they do all say, ‘for entertainment purposes only’. So if you read that and still want to waste your money, I’m sorry, but you have been warned.

My dad used to tell me about an elderly female relative from when he was a kid. The family say she would stop in her tracks when someone died and knew before anyone else. She also knew women were pregnant before they knew themselves. Very strange

okay, but I’m not saying it makes sense. I think it’s a load of crap. I don’t belive in it. I just believe that what ever happens, happens for a reason. You don’t - fabulous! We are all different.

I mean, I know it’s a load of crap. When I was struggling to find a job, I got one as a phone line tarot reader and text answer service for the company that does the Mystic Meg and Russell Grant phone lines.

I’d never seen a set of tarot card in my life before then, and I certainly have no psychic powers, but I did go to drama school, so I managed to pass the short test interview and got the job (I ended up making about £1 an hour when you broke it down, it’s a scam on both ends).

You tell people what they want to hear.

And I’m not saying I don’t belive we have no free will at all. I could walk out of my house now, go and buy a bag load of drugs off the estate and chose to live in a doorway.

I mean that sometimes you can try and try to go down a path and it’s knock back after knock back until you have to stop - and then you see that it wasn’t meant to be because something better occurs.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/04/2026 09:32

I do think a very few people have some sort of gift or ability that can’t be explained.
A relative has experience of one such, an acquaintance, who incidentally doesn’t charge or do it by appointment. At a casual meeting she was told things relating to a relative (not close family) and an incident close to her death a few hundred miles away - nothing she could possibly have researched in advance.

Relative later conferred with her own mother, who’d been there, and confirmed what she’d been told.

I think the convincing ones are exceptionally intuitive and excellent at cold readings. My friend used to go regularly. She was a believer but apparently the dead like discussing stuff like home decor and domestic issues rather than the fundamental secrets of the universe and existence! My friend said the woman she went to did not charge but asked for ‘donations’.

A colleague of mine also used to moonlight on tarot lines, it’s a load of crap.

researchers3 · 15/04/2026 09:17

I saw a 'psychic' years ago when I was very low and desperate.

He was very accurate, however, given the state I was in, this was fairly easy guesswork for him.

However, he did say a couple of things that turned out to be true that I didn't know about at the time, but they turned out to be true.

He only knew my first name which is extremely common and my phone number isnt online.

He was also so extraordinarily empathetic that I actually felt better speaking from him then I did a couple of counsellors. I can only say it was a positive experience but I got lucky I think.

Not something I'd advocate or really believe in in the cold light of day.
