How do clairvoyants know things??

Homer2 · 14/04/2026 13:45

I have never believed in this, I saw one once just for fun at my aunties house and she wasn’t great. She did say a few things that were accurate, but I put this down to being guesses or general vague things that would be relevant to the majority of people.

However, recently my friend went to one. She recently lost her dad and her partner. Without telling the clairvoyant anything, she knew how her partner died and what his name was. She mentioned my friends dad blowing kisses in a weird way, with the palm of his hand instead of his fingers, which is something he did used to do. How would she know these things??? I don’t honestly believe in it, but can’t understand how she’d know such specific things

This is the thing.

It would be really, really easy for a genuine psychic to prove that they were genuine, and what's more they'd make a fucking fortune to boot. The fact that they haven't speaks volumes.

Just like it should be really, really easy for God to prove He exists. Just come down, do a few miracles and I'll renouce my atheism so fast it'll make His head spin.

I had a fridge magnet once with this on it:

"Don't make Me come down there." - God

She used to know who was next to pass away because she would see the spirits of their relatives who had already passed surround their bed in the hour before they passed themselves

No she wouldn't. She was either lying to you or seriously mentally unwell.

No reason to lie and most definitely wasn’t seriously mentally unwell. What a weird judgement to make! 😂

If people experience the world differently from you, are they automatically liars or ‘seriously mentally unwell’?

There’s as much evidence for clairvoyants’ abilities as there is for the existence of an omnipotent, omniscient, benevolent deity.

Yep, zero.

No god, no clairvoyants.

Of course I do. Nobody can do that. Nobody has ever been able to do that. As and when somebody can prove otherwise, I'll happily change my mind.

Until then, if a person claims they can do something which they can't, they're lying. If a person genuinely believes they have supernatural abilities and can see 'spirits' which don't exist, they are clearly mentally unwell.

This is the thing.

What evidence have you found of God?

DaVinciGirl · 18/04/2026 15:45

Hot reading ie social media/newspapers and cold reading.

LughLongArm · 18/04/2026 15:39

nomas · 18/04/2026 13:26

No, I said I personally had found no evidence of the supernatural. That doesn’t preclude you.

Edited

The whole point about evidence is that it isn’t subjective.

Derren Brown included the full text of a cold reading that he gave to a load of people, in his book Tricks of the Mind. It's very clever. They all thought it was incredibly accurate and personal to them, in fact a couple were a bit upset and unsettled at how intrusive it felt. He gave it to a group of Spanish people too and when he passed it to a translator to translate into Spanish for them, she thought he had meant it as a reading for her and was playing some sort of joke on her. It was tailored for bright people in their early 20s, which is how old I was when I read the book, and dang if it wasn't rather accurate for me as well. Yes, even the bit about having a connection to America or having a feeling I was born in the wrong time. Have I outed myself saying that?

Most of it, of course, was extremely universal but written in such a way that it seemed personal (there was some clever paraphrasing of "you are closer to your friends than you are to people you don't know very well") and it was also rather flattering, with an undertone of "how deep and interesting you are", and we all know what flattery will do to you.

It was very clever. And I actually find it comforting, in a way. The feelings you have, that you struggle with, that might make you feel alone, are actually very very common and part of what binds us all as humans.

I had a colleague who was a nurse working with people who were critically ill / receiving palliative care. She used to know who was next to pass away because she would see the spirits of their relatives who had already passed surround their bed in the hour before they passed themselves. 100% accuracy. She didn’t tell many people about it because she knew people would disbelieve her and she certainly never told the patient or their living relatives. I think it was quite a burden for her.

Some people can tune in to your thoughts and subconscious knowledge, like tuning into a radio station. Similar to Morphic Resonance. I knew someone who had this ability, and she said it was a curse. But note, they can only tell you something you already know - they can make predictions based on their experience or observations, but I don't see how they can know the future. This woman correctly told me (after I pushed her to tune in) that I was carrying twins and what their sexes would be. This was before I knew, but of course my body knew!

These are the people with that ability. There are also lots of charlatans around, who are clever in getting people to reveal stuff without them realising.

No they can't. Nobody can, or has ever been able to do this.

It’s not a problem at all. You were simply the one who said there was no evidence for the existence of ghosts. There’s equally no evidence for the existence of any deities.

Yes, and people are free to believe and disbelieve as they wish, why is that a problem for you.

To be clear, there is no cogent, verifiable, independently tested evidence for clairvoyance, mediumship, ghosts, life after death, or God.

Fine if you believe in spite of that, but let’s not pretend there’s any proper evidence for any of them.

Thread is about clairvoyants not God though.

Lifeomars · 18/04/2026 12:26

pre internet they relied on open ended questions and body language plus a person's willingness to be convinced/conned. Just say to someone "I can see you have had loss in your life" and take it from there. These days they can use Google, Facebook (if you are haven't used the privacy settings), Instagram, and so on. Plus they only tell people things that they already know which has always struck me as bizarre. Why pay to be told about things that have aleady happened.

I’ve bookmarked your posts @Scorchio84 and have never heard of tyrophobia so will be looking into that too. If we’ve gone off topic too much, I’d love it if you started a new thread in Sleep ❤️

Don't you might be sorry!!! 😂Also thanks I didn't even know there was a subforum to do with sleep, I'll have a nose over the weekend

@GarlicFind I love Derren Brown!

He's excellent. I've read one of his books and it's illuminating about how you can read people, and deceive them! A fascinating study of human psychology.
