AIBU to feel miffed that SIL refused Easter eggs?!

In the scheme of things this is not a major problem but I'm curious to know what you ladies think.....!!!
I got lovely unicorn Thorntons eggs for DH little nieces but at the last minute my in laws went away for Easter so we hadn't dropped the eggs to them. We tried to make an arrangement to drop over since they got back but when i mentioned we had eggs for the girls my SIL said to keep them ourselves and that they had enough chocolate. Again I know it's not a major deal, I just felt a bit flat as was excited to give them and see their faces. I know kids have all eaten too much chocolate at this stage but I just think now they'll think we didn't get them any egg! Curious to know if you think she's being too fussy or has a point?

Never heard of a sugar high then?
Of course it is and anyone who thinks otherwise is in denial.

The 'sugar high' thing has been proved to be a myth in multiple studies. It's been very thoroughly debunked through rigorous scientific methods. It's very easy to look these studies up, but @saraclara has very helpfully provided info above if that helps.

So no, not 'in denial'. Just aware of the actual science.

The sugar high thing was debunked long ago. Check the peer-reviewed research papers linked here. And there are more.

There is no evidence that there is any such thing as a ‘sugar high’

Agree with this 100
Whinge they don't get "help" .. where is the village
Yet "help "must be on very rigid terms..
I no longer bothered with emotional drains like that

Well yes, but OP is causing the drama here. SIL has polietly said "no thanks" and it's OP who is all bent out of shape.

Well technically refined sugar is just like a drug!

No, 'technically' it isn't like a drug at all. You might describe it like that in a metaphorical sense, but it doesn't actually affect your body in the same way as a drug at all.

The amount of bollocks that's spoken about sugar on Mumsnet, with absolutely no science to back it up, is insane.

Enough chocolate! The absolute temerity. Who says such a thing

Eat it yourself and don’t bother making an effort for SIL anymore.

I don't see the problem, they get far too much chocolate as it is! Never noticed while i still lived in the UK but i live in an orthodox Christian country where its more about painting and eating actual eggs than chocolate ones. My kids got haf an egg each this year!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 14/04/2026 09:59

So you would be happy for people to override your rules as a parent? Okay then

Yup because it's chocolate
It's not a big deal
Those kids with almond mums who weren't 'allowed ' sugar...
Guess what happened when they went to parties ...
Guess what happened when they became teenagers and had pocket money
..
Have a guess

Based on absolutely nothing. What a load of drama about chocolate. The mom doesn't want her kids having more chocolate, that's the end of it. OP will know for next time.

Know for next time ?

If they did that on me they'd be knowing no presents next time.
That will knock sil of her high horse
And I would be letting her darling kids know why

Doesn't anyone buying a gift do so to give the recipient pleasure? And as a parent, don't you enjoy seeing your children get joy from your gifts at Christmases and birthdays?
Well grandparents and aunts and uncles get pleasure from that joy, too. They love their small relatives, and they like to make them happy.

And as we've discovered that the SIL in this situation used to give OP 's kids Easter eggs, presumably she got pleasure in giving, too.

Seriously, so many parents on here want their children to have a family 'village'. Yet here we are with some of them seeming to resent their family members caring about their children and wanting to do nice things for them.

Sorry to be a viper but I can’t stand the attitude of people like you. It’s all about You. You want to see their little faces light up, you want them to think you’re the nice aunt. What about actually being a good person and not giving junk to children? it’s bad for their health, bad for their teeth, and entirely unnecessary. leave the kids alone and if you absolutely must get your ego kicks from doing things that are harmful to kids then seek therapy rather than complaining about the parents for trying to protect them.

rant over

I hope you're not a parent. There is nothing wrong with kids having occasional treats.

Occasional treats, yes, but with "occasional" treats coming from all directions, it feels imposdible to keep them to a reasonable level some days. The last thing parents need is other adults guilt tripping about it.

But that is for the parent of said child to decide

And then if she found out she would be upset about the fact that the faces of the ‘smallies’ (that’s on a par with the poster many years ago who called supper ‘sups’) wouldn’t have lit up.

She’s called her out on here. Major drama for nothing

Posting on an anonymous forum is not major drama.

It’s natural to be hurt when you try and reciprocate a simple gesture (giving Easter eggs to dc) and to be rejected like that.

The kind thing to do would be to accept the eggs, stash them in the car and give them to the food bank.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 12/04/2026 20:01

nomas · 12/04/2026 19:59

To be fair, OP hasn’t called her out. My suggestion is OP ignore her from now on and let her brother deal with her.

Even less reason to call her out - it’s not like she’s expecting anything from OP while not reciprocating
