When DD (10months) wakes, I change her and then give her milk. I then pop her in her playpen where she happily plays with toys. I then make a coffee and watch some TV - play pen is infront of TV (well TV in on wall, playpen is infront of couch). I sometimes just watch her and occassional look up at TV sometimes I will watch the TV. I enjoy having my morning coffee and she is happy playing. After 30mins / 1hr or so I then take her through to kitchen where I give her actual breakfast, porridge, yoghurt, etc.
DH wfh and when walking past livingroom popped head in to say hi. He looks shocked thst I had a coffee and was lying on sofa watching TV. He asked was mummy having a day off and that the play pen isnt for me watching TV and that im being lazy. I was so annoyed. Is he right?

Fuck me a lot of judgy pants here aren't there OP! Are you happy with it? Will you regret your behaviour later? One thing guaranteed as a parent: you will be wrong regardless so within reason do what makes you happy. It seems this does. I wouldn't change a thing

I am completely baffled by them 😂 arguing against me then agreeing when you just reword what I said! 😂 I was using driving as an example of watching multiple things at the same time while I am currently typing on my phone, have a full view of my son eating and can see he's watching Mario on the TV out of the corner of my eye (peripherals for the one that was arguing with me!) All at the same time! It's not hard 🤦‍♀️

I think this thread has taken a turn 😂😂

I do the lion’s share of the child play, baths, feeding, sleep routine etc. and the only break I get is nap time (with youngest). I also do the cooking, cleaning and all the other tasks in the house too. Oh and I work, regularly run and do other exercise.

My eldest child didn’t get screen time until after 3, and only 1hr maximum from a strict list of appropriate series (no cartoons or any of that Miss Rachel nonsense). Usually doesn’t even last 30 mins before running off to play. At 10 months there was certainly no screens and constant attention with encouragement towards solo play while I was prepping dinner etc. which worked well.

Anyway, I’ve gone on for far too long to state that the OP is lazy.

You’re a man aren’t you @LondonPapa

Lucky you… you have a wife 😆 . We could all do with one of them.

whattheysay · 12/04/2026 13:10

Some absolutely nonsense on here. My children are now in their 20s so we didn’t have phones and non stop children’s programs etc until much later but I definitely put on dvds for them and stuck them in front of the tv to get a break. They watched tv in between going out to parks and farms and walks and going to groups and reading and playing sports and all the other normal and educational things children should be doing. They have not grown up violent, inattentive and non verbal, they have all attended university and have professional careers and are lovely well rounded people.
While they watched tv I got on and did the million other things I had to do or sat and read a magazine and had a cup of coffee. This was perfectly normal and no one was made to feel guilty about their children watching tv. My husband certainly didn’t expect me to be up and doing things every minute of the day while he was at work and had breaks

beeble347 · 12/04/2026 13:08

Also - would you consider paying a sleep consultant?

I know ChatGPT doesn't get everything right but it's also a free alternative, we used it to tweak our DS's routine when he went through a phase of waking up for the day at 4.30/5am

beeble347 · 12/04/2026 13:07

ILoveFatFaceSocks · 12/04/2026 00:24

Well dd eventually went to sleep in her cot at 1115pm for 45mins and then woke up. Shes now next to me in bed tossing and turning. Im waiting until she falls asleep before moving to her cot, again. And so this is my bedtime routine until 4am-ish... or earlier, whenever i give up, really.

Hence why I like my coffee and eastenders in the morning 😭😭 im so annoyed bedtime has been going on since 8pm!!!!

So this is why I cant batch cook when she falls asleep because they are such short windows and then I go to bed. Then during the day its contact naps. I would love to wake up earlier but i dont get a good sleep with half the night of battling against cot and then I dont sleep right when she is in our bed.

Feel like much a failure at bedtime.

I hate how she slept through until 9 months. I hate how she wont sleep through unless shes in my bed. I am so fucking tierd.

Oh OP I'm so sorry, that is so wearing ☹️

Your DH is ridiculous, I'm sorry. Mine WFH but 2.5 jobs, does all the cooking for us (well did for ages, I'd try and help make a main dish for dinner in the daytime sometimes and do all the food for our DS but DH always makes us dinner), does the large majority of the cleaning. Did all of it for ages! He's so busy but he'll take DS while I finish making his food if he's really fussy and I'm struggling.

Mine is breastfed so at 13 months has only recently started doing what could be considered sleeping through the night, then started teething again and stopped. This only happened at all because DH started settling him at night instead of me. We realised he could go all day without milk from me when I went back to work and on his nursery days they were able to get him to sleep without milk or a pram.

Mine was in the next to me for ages tbh. I used to hold him for 20 min then transfer him to the next to me and his first stretch of the night would be the longest. After 4 months he'd wake up every 2h at least.

At 6 months he stopped going down in it at all for about a month, he would wake up as soon as he was transferred regardless of what I did. Solid bedtime routine since 3 months as well. Really annoying having a friend ask if I'd considered using a sleep sack to help him realise it was bedtime (yes, he's always had one and he knows!). I ended up resorting to putting him in the next to me and bending over it to breastfeed him in it on his back so he stayed asleep in it - ridiculous but I was desperate for some time on my own and I'd also had him round the clock for about 3 months straight.

Even now he's in the big crib, he still feeds to sleep and I often get in it with him to transfer him, sometimes he'll wake up a bit and feed more, then I can roll away from him and he'll do a good solid stretch, then DH will settle him if he wakes up. Since DH started this, we've seen DS on the monitor able to wake up, sit up, look around and go back to sleep.

I say that to say, sorry for previously saying I wouldn't watch TV while mine was in the playpen - I wouldn't but have a supportive DH and some time in the evening while baby is asleep. I would be saying to your DH either take on cooking duties or getting baby settled in her crib/night wakes. He's not being a partner at all, that is beyond crap. Breaks from work while you do literally everything for the baby and the three of you at home, then calling YOU lazy! I'd actually be outraged.

Oh and I was extremely precious about my DS's food and did all of it from scratch myself, low sodium everything apart from the odd bit of meat my DH would make him as I don't eat it myself and don't trust myself to prep it properly. Buttered toast is absolutely fine and your DH can sod off! I don't agree that dads should get no say in parenting decisions/care for their kids if they're not doing the main care of them but yours is slacking so much and is just ridiculous about the food as well. I'd go on strike if I was you, OP!

Ok this thread is getting ridiculous and bitchy, one last bit of advice for OP before i unwatch, buy her a single bed with rails, that way you can soothe her in her own bed (room for you to lie down with her) and then go back to your own for some sleep xx

Yes great idea

I did this with ds1

No u can't be watching all mirrors at once i think the poster means if you are looking ahead or one one object you can still see other objects that are surrounding and you do see if they move etc. So in my car, I can be looking ahead and concentrating on the road but I can see my passenger on their phone or taking a drink!

Exactly!

ILoveFatFaceSocks · 12/04/2026 12:44

Mulledjuice · 12/04/2026 12:37

Do you honestly think when you're driving that you are looking at all your mirrors, the road ahead and your dashboard all at the same time? Wild!

Erm... have you heard of peripheral vision? I really REALLY hope you don't drive. You seem to have no clue how eyes work.

ManyATrueWord · 12/04/2026 12:36

As a full time carer you need to make sure you get breaks and lunch hours. My friend had all their children have quiet time in their rooms for an hour after lunch. When the children got older they could read. Wish I had done that! But I have started taking a lunch break.

My apologies. I was listing porridge as an example though and not as a daily breakfast item.

No joke. The limited series are in a foreign language, a language of very few speakers. It is absolutely of zero use to 99% of those here. Due to this, why would I waste time in sharing?

Can I have the list please

So do it for the 1% then @LondonPapa

Surely can’t be that onerous a task!

Scarfitwere · 12/04/2026 11:09

Some people on here are just trolling I'm sure. Either that or they'll end up with children who cannot entertain themselves or free play for more than 30 seconds. You arent lazy. You're doing it right imo. A stressed mum at breaking point is not good for the child. A happier mum who's had half an hour to regroup with a coffee is going to be a much better parent!

VitsQ · 12/04/2026 11:05

@ILoveFatFaceSocks it's amazing how many different views are on this thread. You'd almost think some people join mumsnet to be cnuts to strangers 😉

Sorry you've had a shit night. I hope your day is a nicer one 💐

Have you compiled your list yet?
I bet your kids loved cartoons and you've said otherwise to appear better than us all 😂
List, now, please...
