AIBU to find the comedian Katherine Ryan's turn to the right surprising?

I was raised by a single mum and really liked Katherine Ryan's early standup that mostly focused on being a single mum in crap relationships. Several years ago she hooked up with her childhood sweetheart and had several kids with him, and since then her persona has taken quite a turn.

She defended the manosphere participants in Louis Theroux's recent docs, said that she liked Jordan Peterson, and today on social has featured her partner talking about how the moon landing is a conspiracy. Partner is 'not academic' I'll say politely, and MAGA-adjacent. He doesn't work and is a full time dad yet Katherine does the vast majority of childcare (and all of the earning) whilst he golfs. Clearly she got a lot of negative feedback from her (100% women and gay men) audience on her manosphere comments, because she backtracked a bit.

The situation seems like something she would have laughed at years ago, and it's been strange to see her comedy twist to support this, claiming she's always had provocative views.

I don't see any celebs as heroes so this isn't a 'my hero isn't who I expected' just more of a wow, didn't see this twist coming.

To be fair he has talked about helping female clients negotiate pay rises at work. That's not exactly the action of someone who thinks all women should be at home. He is iffy though.

He tells women that their biology makes them innately unsuited to contributing and succeeding at the highest levels of society. And that they need to overcome their biology to learn and ape the superior behaviours of men.
He has helped women negotiate pay rises by advising them to present with the same level of assertiveness and display of confidence that men do. An extremely basic and obvious piece of advice, around which he wraps a big woolly blanket of guff to support his unproven and harmful nonsense about pink (inferior) brains and blue (superior) ones.
I don't believe he has ever said he wants women to be in the home. However he has said our biology means this is the most suitable place for us. Which in my opinion is worse as he's disguising his sexist believes as a scientific fact.

Some women in the public eye aren't necessarily that progressive, but they'll ride that bandwagon if it makes them popular and helps their career. Given her current views, I wonder if she might have said/done "feminist" stuff in the past to help her gain attention and notoriety, not necessarily because she believed it.

I guess this sounds a bit misogynistic in itself. But sometimes I just get a vibe that what you hear someone say isn't necessarily genuine, they're just saying it to sound/look good. I don't notice it that much (I do believe that most women do believe in equality and feminism, if they say they are feminist). So yeah, that's my theory. Maybe she's just full of shit.

Completely agree with this. Her last couple of Instagram posts are literally her husband talking about his moon landing denial. This isn’t obscure stuff I’ve gone digging for.

And it’s not about “she votes X and I vote Y, burn the witch.” It’s about noticing a pretty stark shift in a public figure who shares intimate details of her home life on monetised platforms.

She’s said she and her husband argued early in their relationship because he believed Hillary Clinton was involved in Pizzagate, and that she’s since come round to realising he was awake to the truth (pizzagate is a conspiracy theory that alleges that Hillary Clinton herself literally sex trafficked babies and children via the basement of a pizza restaurant). Add in the moon landing stuff, and these views all line up very neatly with her relationship timeline and what her husband publicly says on her channels.

I don't give a shit about who she votes for. The disconnect between her public opinions five years ago and now is remarkable. It would be just as notable if a public figure platformed a partner with Holocaust denial or race pseudoscience views. It’s not about “picking on her." It’s about commenting on what she’s chosen to publicly promote.

I mean more fool you really for spending so much time listening to so much guff.

Maybe clean your room?

Do you think childless women (and men) have not fulfilled their role, then?

No, knowing what Evolutionary Psychology says about one thing DOES NOT MEAN I agree with that premise.

Is these what the problem is now? Having any knowledge of something automatically means the person having that knowledge 100% must agree with it?

Shedmistress · 12/04/2026 08:58

QueenSophia · 12/04/2026 07:47

He said that childless women are likely to be disagreeable, though.

And? I am disagreable and I am childless. This is not breaking news.

A public figure's views are the public 's damn business. That's part of the cost of being a public figure.

Fair enough for you. But there are a whole heap of cunty men and mediocre male comedians this thread could ‘dislike’ before a MN lynch mob comes for relatively inoffensive Kathrine Ryan of all people. I can only assume it’s internalised misogyny because this is what women typically get when they have a mind of their own and don’t conform.

Holding right wing views is no more having a mind of one's own and not conforming than holding left wing views. In fact right wing views are populist, so I'm always puzzled when people try to give them a veneer of maverikism.
Have you not noticed the support for Reform?
For every person disappointed in KR for following the herd to the right, I'm sure there will be others who have newly noticed her with approval now she's saying the things they agree with. I'm sure she knows this.
Regardless, the OP started her thread to discuss one particular woman who has freely aired her views in the public domain, yet you seem to want to silence women discussing the work and opinions of that woman, and get us to talk about men instead? So when a woman speaks, you think its best we ignore her and turn our attention to the men in her field?

Everybodys · 12/04/2026 08:06

QueenSophia · 12/04/2026 07:45

I agree criticising someone for not being left is silly but MAGA and manosphere are different. Manosphere is misogynistic ans MAGA implies total endorsement of Trump. You can be right wing without being that.

Yes, there is quite a big difference here. There are lots of ways to be right of centre that MAGA are anathema to.

QueenSophia · 12/04/2026 07:53

Shedmistress · 11/04/2026 10:33

In basic evolutionary psychology, it is every organism's 'role' to have kids.

He doesn't campaign for systematic rape to ensure that all women MUST have children, does he?

Do you think childless women (and men) have not fulfilled their role, then?

QueenSophia · 12/04/2026 07:50

Shedmistress · 11/04/2026 20:21

I don't think anyone should have a problem with someone liking anyone else to be honest. Anyone who starts threads about individuals because they like the 'wrong person/people' is pretty pathetic.

People can like whoever the fuck they want. Its none of your damn business.

A public figure's views are the public 's damn business. That's part of the cost of being a public figure.

QueenSophia · 12/04/2026 07:48

5128gap · 11/04/2026 17:12

He states that women are less successful than men because they have biological traits that render them unsuited to leadership and suited to domesticity. In a nutshell, that when it comes to the big stuff, the power, the influence, the public sphere, men are innately better suited to it.
He states the only way women can contribute at this level are if they learn the characteristics of men.
So while he stops short of directly saying women must stay at home and have babies while men rule the world, he slyly messages the same by trying to garner support for mostly debunked biological imperitavism, while doing a bit of a side grift in claiming to be able to teach women to be more like men.
I don't think he's a 'baddie' because he thinks traditional sex based roles are a functional way to structure society. Though I personally disagree.
I think he's a 'baddie' because he's a charlatan. Giving his views fake credibility by pretending they're based in science.

To be fair he has talked about helping female clients negotiate pay rises at work. That's not exactly the action of someone who thinks all women should be at home. He is iffy though.

No the info on JP has been 'oh you sweet summer child' (to a 58 year old ex engineer) through to 'he thinks all women must have children' which is total nonsense.

He said that childless women are likely to be disagreeable, though.

I think she can be very funny and used to really like her, but agree the husband set up is bizarre. She’s always talking about how attractive he is and in the context of her recent facelift said that she needed it because he still looked good whereas pregnancy/motherhood had aged her - it did seem very much like her self-worth is connected to what she perceives as her attractiveness to him.

But he is so far from a catch this makes no sense whatsoever?! He’s not good looking, he seems very stupid, and most of all he appears to contribute nothing to their lives which are fully funded by her. It baffles me that she is so desperate to hang on to this total sponger - cut him loose Katherine!

She has talked about how her mum dated (and I think maybe married?) someone her age (Katherine’s age) while Katherine was at high school, so maybe there is some kind of trauma/complex there.

Yep. It’s all very odd!

I was confused by the dislike of Jordan Peterson on MN a few years ago - so I read his books. I had never heard of him until I saw his name on MN. He has some great points. I dont agree with everything of course. That would be odd.

I do think if you agree with everything someone says (be it a friend or a relative or spouse) someone is lying! It is normal and healthy to have disagreements and differences of opinion. I really wouldn’t want friends who agree with 100% of my views - 60% would be good. If they agree with everything I say I assume they are unsure around me and don’t trust me enough to say what they really believe. That’s not a friendship.

I think so may people have become very black and white - we look to others to gain viewpoints without reading or watching peoples work. Or we watch clips on SM rather than the actual interview. I have since met a few people who hate Peterson but have never read or watched him - it’s just they have been told he is bad by people who’s views they agree with. You can agree with some of what someone says, if saying I like some of his points makes someone dislike me, that’s okay.

This idea that there good and bad people makes me think of religion. Most people have complex thoughts and I love a good conversation.

In the last few years I have become increasingly aware that many people hide their views even from close friends. Liking someone even if they hold a different view seems to be more unusual now - I speak to so many people each week due to 8/9 very unrelated things things I am involved with and I am shocked by how may people make a beeline to me for a chat. I speak to new people every week too. Too may people have said it’s refreshing to chat to someone nowadays who is happy to agree to disagree.

I would say I’m pretty average at conversation and I’ve never been super popular until now. My phone actually doesn’t stop buzzing. Mindblowing as I was a bit of a hermit a few years ago.

My issue with Jordan Peterson is not to do with his books at all but with stuff he's said on SM. I think both the life rules books are very sensible,,but his views expressed on SM are often not.

QueenSophia · 12/04/2026 07:41

Credittocress · 10/04/2026 10:43

People often change their views throughout their lives as their circumstances and priorities change. I’d be more worried if someone hadn’t changed their views over a decade.

i think we also need to be aware that there is a class of celebrities that aren’t actually that interesting but keep themselves in the headlines and public eye by saying ragebait.

If you don’t like it, don’t engage or listen to it. She’s likely only doing it to keep in the public eye

The issue imo surely isn't changing her views but what they've changed to. I agree supporting tye manosphere sounds like attention seeking.

I listen to Katherine Ryan’s podcasts - she seems to like to play devil’s advocate for attention so am not sure it’s worth taking what she says too seriously. As to Bobby it does seem she’s obsessed with having won back her high school sweetheart whereas he’s got a meal ticket to do fuck all.

EachandEveryone · 12/04/2026 07:04

He built her a swimming pool! Surely if they split she’d still have to fund his life style she sure wouldn’t be getting any maintenance from him.

I see her all the time pushing her buggy with various dc I think she’s a good mum and definitely is a grafter. I have been over thinking things and wondering if the three with Bobby will go to private school and how much more work she will have to do? It’s eye watering the fees. I have too much time on my hands 😀
