Man jailed for stealing handbag that contained £2.2m Fabergé egg - BBC News

To wonder why anyone would take a Fabergé egg with them to the pub? Obviously it was a horrendous crime for the man to take the bag and he deserves to go to prison, but what would possess someone to take a bag containing such a valuable artifact to a pub, in Soho no less?

I was so surprised she was still employed, gross misconduct straight off, surely.

Yes, items worth SO much money, insurance paid out a pittance in comparison and they’ve still not been found.

What the hell was she thinking?

I bet she won’t be top of any promotion list.

Stupidity

takealettermsjones · 10/04/2026 00:38

Oh come on, she was definitely in on it!!

Because it’s all part of a larger and more complex plot. I haven’t worked out the full details yet, but there’s more to this than meets the eye.

I agree that something seems a bit fishy

Bellavida99 · 10/04/2026 00:30

We don’t have lockers at work anymore and I hate it if I have to take laptop to pub. I’d be a nervous wreck with that bounty in my bag

@driftingdownintomiami surely they had to because as you say why on earth would she still have a job?

Maybe it’s her family’s business? Parents, DHs, that would explain the leniency.

Pearlyb · 10/04/2026 00:20

I know! Who the hell has 2m golden diamond encrusted egg in their handbag, then get distracted by a pub on the way home, pop out for a cig, get completely lost in thought and boom, next thing you know the bag is gone! Like if I was carrying that in my bag I'd take an uber or probably even a black cab, talking with someone constantly on the phone so that they know mine and the egg's exact and realtime whereabouts, clutching the bag for my dear life, until I get it home safe. Hell, I'd put an airtag on it, and all. If someone was so crazy that they'd just let a random woman carry it around in their handbag, that is. How, just how, was she so blasé about it that she randomly took it to a pub??

Absolute rotten luck for this to happen on Bring Your Fabergé Egg to Work Day.

😂😂😂

I'm normally not someone to blame the victim of a crime but...

I’m amazed she kept her job.

Seeing it on the news earlier my adult kids were all debating if he’d been stitched up - get the petty criminal to steal the bag with no idea as to the true value and then live on the money for the faberge stuff while he carries the can. I can’t say I blame them for wondering!

drippingsap · 10/04/2026 00:02

she was carrying it from an event wasn’t sure? Why on earth was a security firm not used, it’s bizarre!

ColinOfficeTrolley · 10/04/2026 00:00

It wasn't just on the pub floor, she took it out with her to have a cig in the smoking area and put it between her feet!! A Fabergé egg. In a fag area, on the floor.

I cannot believe she has kept her job.

LamentableShoes · 09/04/2026 23:54

Bet there were a few KitKats in there as well!

TheAutumnCrow · 09/04/2026 23:49

Maybe they let her keep her job because their insurance claim must have been predicated on their employee not being negligent.

I guess they lost out big time; and now they’re stuck with her. Or she has ‘connections’.

Management must have known she took it hence she still has her job.

Why did insurance only pay out £106k if the egg was worth £2m?

probs invalidated by the whole in bag left on floor thing.

But they couldn't have authorised her to take it to the pub? Maybe they did and that's the reason she still has a job. But any other job you take stuff offsite at your own risk.

KolaBear · 09/04/2026 23:42

I wouldn’t even put my own handbag, that obviously would never have a £2.2m Faberge egg in it, on the floor between my legs outside a Soho pub cos of bloody thieves, so what on earth was she thinking 🤯

BrieHugger · 09/04/2026 23:41

Inside the £1,600 bag was an emerald-encrusted Fabergé egg and Fabergé watch, a £1,500 Apple laptop and AirPods, a £350 store voucher, keys, three bank cards, £200 worth of make-up, a Mulberry card holder worth £150 and £20 in cash.

Who puts a designer handbag on the floor let alone in a pub smoking area… and with over £2m worth of loot in it? She’s either thick as mince or a criminal mastermind.

Fizbosshoes · 09/04/2026 23:39

If the egg was made of gold and gemstones, maybe it was broken up. More chance of selling scrap gold than finding a casual buyer for a faberge egg..?

thetinsoldier · 09/04/2026 23:29

No, but he clearly sold it on somewhere and it hasn’t been recovered!

But for how much, I wonder. You’d have to know people and presumably accept very much less than it’s worth and less than it would get passed on for. Admittedly my knowledge of this is based on Edgar Wallace books that I’ve not read for years. But you couldn’t take it to your usual, er, fence, could you? Or if you did, you’d be expecting them to get rid of this nuisance for you pretty sharpish. Unless it’s just tucked away somewhere.

853ax · 09/04/2026 23:33

It was borrowed for a work event.
Presume whoever supplied it should have collected or arranged collection/security.
Perhaps this woman had to continue work by entertaining/organising something at this pub after the main event. I didn't read that far into it story
