Man jailed for stealing handbag that contained £2.2m Fabergé egg - BBC News

To wonder why anyone would take a Fabergé egg with them to the pub? Obviously it was a horrendous crime for the man to take the bag and he deserves to go to prison, but what would possess someone to take a bag containing such a valuable artifact to a pub, in Soho no less?

I was wondering the exact same thing myself.

This stupid woman should have been sacked for gross misconduct. There's no way her employer would have sanctioned her taking this item to the bloody pub.

Sounded to me like a dodgy insurance claim 😂

err yeah my bag got nicked, I want £200 for the bag, £50 for my wallet and £100grand for my faberge egg I never leave home without

Yup. The insurance payout is telling here.
Unless it was ridiculously under-insured, a payout of less than a tenth of the estimated value is saying —
Yeah. We don’t believe your story, here’s 100 grand, now get lost.

This is so weird, I can't imagine being that blasé about a £2m item. I had to take 7k in cash to the bank once, it was about 100 metres to walk, from work to the bank. ive literally never held a bag that tightly
I cant even think why you'd just be carrying it in a handbag anyway!
Id want to have a closer hold of the laptop as well....Confused

About 25 years ago there was a payroll cock up and I had to take out the month's salary for the entire company and give it out. It was tens of thousands. Even withdrawing it was a complete ballache, it wasnt just a case of going to the counter and taking it out, it had to be arranged. And going back knowing i was carrying so much cash was terrifying. My heart was hammering so much I thought I was having a heart attack!

@Forthesteps well that's debatable, certainly a sliding doors thing. I mean they were expensive but it's there provenance that's pushed the value up and keeps it up.

When I first seen this story when it first happened me and dh thought straight away it was an inside insurance job.

@BewareoftheLambs I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I agree some of them aren't pretty at all. The reason they are high value is because they were especially made for and owned by the Romanov family and some were sneaked out of Russia after their assassination. I sometimes wonder if they hadn't been assassinated would they even be a thing? 🤓

Come on, of course they would. The workmanship for a start.

It’s bonkers isn’t it. Leave it at home, probably best in a safe; it’s not a very pretty Faberge egg!

I think it's gorgeous 😍

She was the CEO of the company.

Oh is she? Didn’t say that in the article linked in the OP. Oh well her loss.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 10/04/2026 13:56

Mindblowingly stupid thing to do if it wasn't a deliberate crime.

Faberge have videos on YouTube on how they've made some of these recent bespoke eggs. They are fabulous to watch, the skill is incredible.

Probably someone looking for attention.

L0V315 · 10/04/2026 11:19

Where else do you put your faberge egg after taking it to the office for show and tell? It isnt a fucking yoni egg after all..

Heathens the lot of you

Faberge egg kedgeree. YUM!

MyThreeWords · 10/04/2026 09:43

I'm hoping that the thief sold it for a tenner, and that the purchaser gave it to his/her child for Easter, perhaps as part of an Easter egg hunt.

Bet the child was pissed off when she couldn't find a bit that was actually made of chocolate.

Faberge eggs are so blingy and horrible that a child's toy box is probably the best place for them though.

You need to see them in real life.

They are exquisite. Pictures on the internet don't really do Faberge Eggs justice lol.

I have done, I just think they look a bit naff. Like I say, maybe I just have no taste.

Odd story, but also it baffles me why these are worth so much. Clearly I have no taste, but to me they seem rather ugly.

Saw this yesterday and thought the same.

Even more stunned to see that apparently she still works for the company.

I wouldn’t even put my own handbag, that obviously would never have a £2.2m Faberge egg in it, on the floor between my legs outside a Soho pub cos of bloody thieves, so what on earth was she thinking 🤯

This thought came to my mind as soon as I read it. However, according to her mother she is ‘very upset’ Who on earth would think it was ok to take it to a pub in the first place? You’d have thought she’d want to get it somewhere safe as soon as possible.

Me either. Who doesn't? 🤣

YerMotherWasAHamster · 10/04/2026 09:31

Tbh I would assume she was in on it.

deserthighway · 10/04/2026 09:30

it still sounds like an inside job to me.

I don't think it's a co-incidence that the company that owned this egg were Irish and the man who took it was arrested in Ireland in spite of the fact that he's from London.

But yes, she's a stupid woman. There's a fair few about.

As someone whose 24 year old daughter had her bag (containing her macbook) stolen from a pub in Soho, with the cards used at a nearby shop to buy alcohol and cigarettes within minutes, I'm kind of surprised the thief got a custodial sentence tbh. People have served less time for causing death by dangerous driving.

The article itself says the bag was "placed between her legs on the floor ...". Someone really should have subbed that and amended it to "feet". Journalism nowadays, honestly☹.

Just what I was thinking. It’s not fair to penalise the thief just because he happened to nick a priceless egg. He just bucked a bag.
