Man jailed for stealing handbag that contained £2.2m Fabergé egg - BBC News

To wonder why anyone would take a Fabergé egg with them to the pub? Obviously it was a horrendous crime for the man to take the bag and he deserves to go to prison, but what would possess someone to take a bag containing such a valuable artifact to a pub, in Soho no less?

Hiw fid the egg get into the handbag in the place?

Very dodgy?

Bjorkdidit · 11/04/2026 09:01

Someone needs to do a deep dive on this and produce a podcast series or something. People need answers.

Fizbosshoes · 11/04/2026 08:57

The value of the bag, the laptop, and the other items without the egg would make me not want to put it down, outside a pub! 🤣

MandemChickenShop · 11/04/2026 08:52

The headline valuation is misleading. A couple of full sets, with the whiskey sold for $2m, but they only sold 2 of 7 sets. £100k the true value

I'm glad there's a thread about this. So many unanswered questions!

Probably a fake one, the bag thief wouldn't know, someone still has the real one and the insurance cheque i suspect. The whole story is beyond fishy.

Wiseplumant · 11/04/2026 08:37

That's quite a nice one, some of the others are a ott.

I know! Who the hell has 2m golden diamond encrusted egg in their handbag, then get distracted by a pub on the way home, pop out for a cig, get completely lost in thought and boom, next thing you know the bag is gone! Like if I was carrying that in my bag I'd take an uber or probably even a black cab, talking with someone constantly on the phone so that they know mine and the egg's exact and realtime whereabouts, clutching the bag for my dear life, until I get it home safe. Hell, I'd put an airtag on it, and all. If someone was so crazy that they'd just let a random woman carry it around in their handbag, that is. How, just how, was she so blasé about it that she randomly took it to a pub??

Edited

I guarantee it's a scam, insurance fraud probably.

I’m amazed she kept her job.

Seeing it on the news earlier my adult kids were all debating if he’d been stitched up - get the petty criminal to steal the bag with no idea as to the true value and then live on the money for the faberge stuff while he carries the can. I can’t say I blame them for wondering!

Hard agree, the whole thing has a stinky vibe, some kind of fraud going on, nobody sane would go to a pub with this in their handbag, it's literally unbelievable. Insurance scam?

Bertiebiscuit · 11/04/2026 08:28

Really makes you wonder about the lives some people live - carting around a 2 million pound article in your handbag and casually putting it down where someone can just take it? Really? Really?

TheGoldenOwl · 11/04/2026 08:18

If my employer asked me to transport this item of £2.2m after an event I would expect them to provide the safe and secure transport of me and it. I would refuse if they didn't.

I would also say "no thanks, maybe another time! Need to get this thing back to museum/whatever!" to pub drinks after the event.

Monumentally stupid.

Well, if anything this thread has done- it's made me want to watch Vera.

Bunnyfuller1 · 11/04/2026 00:47

It’s the other stuff that gives it away as an insurance fraud -£350 gift card?! Come on!

😂😂😂

It's ridiculous, but I love it!

Me too. DH jokes with me about the fact that when I choose a program on TV, all the commercials are for mobility devices, walk-in baths, funeral providers, and adult-only cruises. I mean, I may seem a WEE bit younger than their target audience, but dude, I need three out of those four things (ha! You’ll have to guess which), so I feel I’m amongst my people, all of us watching ITV3 where they refer to advertising at 9pm as “supporting ITV3 Late Night.”

If it was Vera, the culprit would turn out to be Rasputin's great, great, great, great grand neice, who worked as a cleaner in the Dog and Duck, spotted the Faberge egg in the idiot woman's handbag while she was putting some lippy on in the loo, immediately clocked what it was, and decided to nick it right there and then with the help of her second cousin 4 times removed - and she only features as a potential suspect about 10 minute from the end of the programme. Vera gets all this from staring hard at the specials board in the pub, whilst buying herself a cheeky cheese roll and chips.

This is definitely going to require Poirot. I mean, the one and only REAL Poirot (David Suchet), not Kenneth “Why The Fuck Would Poirot Have a Handlebar Mustache” Branagh. Maybe the dudes from Midsomer Murders. Oh and Vera, too; I love when she calls people “pet.”

Because it’s all part of a larger and more complex plot. I haven’t worked out the full details yet, but there’s more to this than meets the eye.

I would honestly think she’s just stupid and thought ‘god imagine if my bag got stolen with this egg in it?’ And never actually thought it would happen. Then the bloke that stole the bag had no idea of the eggs worth and it’s sat in a charity shop or landfill.

I have done, I just think they look a bit naff. Like I say, maybe I just have no taste.

I thought that when I saw the crown jewels. They just look gaudy and tasteless to me

Well, if you keep your wits about you, it seems that it’s still looking for a home.

stayawayfromthattrapdoor · 10/04/2026 16:55

I have SO many questions about this story, It's absolutely baffling that a £2m Faberge egg doesn't demand a secure arrangement for transportation than being carried around in a handbag, even before you involve it in a trip to the pub.

JulietteHasAGun · 10/04/2026 16:36

Credittocress · 09/04/2026 23:30

Sounded to me like a dodgy insurance claim 😂

err yeah my bag got nicked, I want £200 for the bag, £50 for my wallet and £100grand for my faberge egg I never leave home without

I must admit I thought this. It’s so bonkers that it stinks. I do wonder if the police had a thorough investigation to see if she had any vague connection with the thief. She’s either very clever or very stupid.

Mayflower282 · 10/04/2026 16:32

Insurance scam?

wizzler · 10/04/2026 16:28

Not the same but I’m treasurer for an association. At our annual event we have a raffle where we used to get around £1k in cash. And I had to take it home to bank. Even though I was in the room with people who I knew and trusted I was always massively conscious that I had the money in my bag.. never went to the dance floor and always left early . Cannot imagine what she was thinking
