Shocked by what my BF did to me

This happened at the weekend but has kind of dragged on to the week. I don’t live with my boyfriend but we’ve been together a few months and we spend every other weekend at one of our houses. We were at mine this weekend just gone. We have a quite ‘jokey’ relationship and banter a lot. On Sunday, he hovered over my face (having taken his shorts down) and broke wind. I was in bed on my phone at the time. I went mad at him and he kept defending it as a joke and says that I always joke about doing it to him. I said yes, a joke. I’ve told him I want space, he has attempted to apologise over messaging and asked to call me. I just feel like it’s a line crossed even if it was done purely as a ‘joke’. Is it me or is that the ultimate disrespect?

Whenever I feel a bit down and lonely about being single, a thread like this makes me feel as if I lead a lovely life. Seriously, is this what passes as communication between two grown adults.? OP makes a juvenile joke to her partner who then literally carries out the act. Very immature behaviour

ForeverTheOptomist · 09/04/2026 21:41

Sorry but I'm really confused. He pulled down his pants and farted at you, which is hideous. But you say that You did it to him? Have I missed a post here?

Either way, it sounds revolting, immature and inconsiderate on both parts.

NeedingASafeSpace · 09/04/2026 21:04

OP, you’re over reacting. Disgusting? Yes. Go mad? Yes. But need space? Over a fart? Just give him what for and make sure he doesn’t do it again.
“what did you guys split up over?”
”oh he farted in my face”

An acquaintance of mine dumped someone for farting in bed. She is perpetually single …

AlwaysLookOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 09/04/2026 21:39

Grim all round, though given your jokes perhaps you belong together.
The last time someone farted in my presence I protectively vomited. There were thirty family members in a private dining room and I was suffering from HG.
I'm fairly well-known for being a bit delicate like that, and this was a teenager. If someone did what your bf did, he better hope I didn't have something heavy handy.

CoastalCalm · 09/04/2026 21:32

I had strong words with my nephew for breaking wind next to me at the weekend , there’s no way I’d tolerate this from a partner - would be permanent and terminal ick

H3342 · 09/04/2026 21:28

Is he the kind to send you dick pics? He sounds like he is, thinks a woman is just thrilled to be with him, she should accept anything from him and he can treat her with utter disdain for his own enjoyment

Mogbiscuit · 09/04/2026 21:26

Maray1967 · 09/04/2026 19:38

Yes, what he did was grim, but why on earth were you joking about doing it to him? He’s probably assumed from that that it’s ok.

He might have assumed that and he does sound sorry. You could give him one more chance.

NeedingASafeSpace · 09/04/2026 21:26

Reading this post and the comments I truly now believe I need some boundaries and believe it is a good thing I am single 😅. I would be grossed out but would absolutely not be finishing him for that. It’s literally just a fart.

He treated you like one of his mates. Gross. You're not mates.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 09/04/2026 21:25

That's really really gross but sounds like you both have an immature sense of humour. Really, who AWLAYS makes jokes about farting in their partner's face?I'm also always a bit wary of people who use the word "banter" as it's usually code for being a twat to each other and dressing it up as humour.

If you decide to forgive him I think you should both rethink the boundaries of your banter.

MsSmartShoes · 09/04/2026 21:23

I’ve been with my husband for over twenty years and he has not once farted in front of me.

LizandDerekGoals · 09/04/2026 21:23

ChiliFiend · 09/04/2026 21:22

This surely has moved into "just mates" territory? Messing around like a group of 15yo boys? I don't think anyone would do that to someone they actually fancied.

I thought this too. You dont want him thinking you are one of the lads. You need him to be respectful.

GoldbergVariations · 09/04/2026 21:23

Just sometimes I get the feeling MN stepped in where the Jeremy Kyle Show left off. It's like a visit to the zoo.

Yes, he's disgusting and yes, you bear some responsibility. Raise your standards.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 09/04/2026 21:22

Why is this even a question?

OneFineDay22 · 09/04/2026 21:22

The only man I know to have done this in real life turned out to be an abusive POS.

Get rid.

KimuraTan · 09/04/2026 21:21

Daisymail · 09/04/2026 21:19

Absolutely vile behavior from both; you for joking about it in the first place and him for actually doing it.

This. 💯

Absolutely disgusting all around.

lev2002 · 09/04/2026 21:20

I wouldn't joke about this personally but I still think there's a difference between a joke, to actually farting right in someone's face. I feel like if someone joked about doing this to me I wouldn't think it makes it okay to actually do it. But then again I may be biased as I wouldn't joke about it either 😅

MCF86 · 09/04/2026 21:20

Rpop · 09/04/2026 20:53

This. I wouldn’t end a relationship over a fart.

I would if it was directly in my face like this. BUT I'd never have said anything that might make someone think otherwise.
As disgusting as it is, I can see why this guy did think it would be laughed off.

lebin · 09/04/2026 21:20

I’d be horrified but I don’t enjoy toilet humour. If you joke about this sort of thing then maybe he didn't really think he was crossing a line.
One of my friends told me her and her husband will break wind in bed but will quickly pull the covers over the other one so the are “trapped” with the smell. This is my idea of hell but they find in amusing.

KimuraTan · 09/04/2026 21:20

What sort of person are you to threaten someone with breaking wind in their face?? 🤢

Your partner took it too far but you threatened him with it and maybe he thought your bar was set so low he’d action it. Dump him - learn from this and find some manners.

Daisymail · 09/04/2026 21:19

CocoaTea · 09/04/2026 21:19

rwalker · 09/04/2026 19:20

That’s grim but not totally unexpected as you threaten to do it to him so that kind of sets the tone really

Agree. You are both as bad as each other.

greyweek · 09/04/2026 21:18

Please clarify this bit ‘I always joke about doing it to him’. What exactly are you saying to him? What brought it on the first time you said it?

Bristolandlazy · 09/04/2026 21:16

You're shocked by it yet you've joked about doing it. I can't see how it's that much of a suprise.
