Friend price checked my DH's birthday gift to me, in my face

A girlfriend googled the price of my DH's birthday gift to me (piece of tech) on the day I received it. She asked me what I received and I mentiined it over coffee and was beyond mortified she googled it and priced it. Who does that?

To be honest I think asking an adult what they got for their birthday is a bit weird, let alone checking the price.

Me too! Also, I have a friend who makes a display of all her birthday and Christmas presents and sends photos or invites you in to view. Very strange!

Ok I understand looking the thing up if you would like to buy one for yourself, but some of the replies seem to indicate that they look up the cost of all/most of their friends gifts, why would you do that?

I don’t think the replies indicate that. But if you’re interested in the gift, it is understandable if you look into it

It's a piece of tech. Perhaps she wants one herself. Say the OP got him a new iPad and the friend thinks 'oh that's nice, I might get one, I wonder how much it is'. And she googles it.

Nothing wrong with that. What is weird/rude is doing it while she was with the OP and announcing '£500!' or whatever (I have no I idea how much an iPad costs).

I would do this, but not while you were sitting in front of me!

Saynototheinevitable · 08/04/2026 10:02

I might have checked the price if I wanted to buy it myself but I would never have told you. That is crossing a line in my opinion, your friend has no etiquette.

Googling the price of your friend’s birthday gift is normal?

Why would you do that? I don’t understand the purpose?

I wonder if you’d been boasting about how your dh always buys you incredibly expensive gifts?!

Very odd. Totally normal conversation at any age.

Agree this is normal conversation. Even googling the gift is normal ish but not normal to tell the receiver!

Don’t be daft.

Do you?

Obviously we're all different but if I went for coffee with a friend on their birthday, I'd see that as making normal conversation.

I’d ask “did you have a nice birthday?” But I wouldn't ask what they’d been given.

If they volunteered the info, I’d chat about it, but I wouldn't ask up front.

Lactoorsupp · 08/04/2026 09:53

There’ll be a backdrop
have you whinged in the past about your dh being a tight arse?

Trickedbyadoughnut · 08/04/2026 09:52

I'd definitely check the price, but not when you were there 😅

Did she price check it or did she fancy one herself and googled it?
