CF Neighbours threatening to complain to council over EV charger ‘hire’

FootballMumm · 07/04/2026 18:42

We live close to the head office of a big corporate company - thousands of employees attend across the week.

Our house is a couple of streets away, and we’ve got an EV charger. We have made this available for ‘rent’, and it’s at a far more affordable cost than the chargers at the head office. Therefore, we’ve built up over time through word of mouth etc and we usually average about 3 people using it a day.

This has been for about 3 months with no issues at all.

Yesterday, our neighbour knocked and said they are uncomfortable with the ‘comings and going’s’ and not knowing who these people are, and feel it’s cheapening the street . I pointed out they work more or less over the road in corporate roles.

They then said that they have found some of the behaviour ‘unacceptable’. I asked for examples to which they gave two:

-A man smoking whilst waiting for his charge to finish
-A woman on the phone making an ‘extreme’ sexual remark. On pressing what this was, it was basically a fouler version of ‘I’ve had a crap day and want to have sex tonight’.

I said that usually, people leave their cars and then go into work before returning either on break, lunch or at the end of the day. But said I’d keep an eye out for any untoward behaviour.

I thought this would placate them, but they said that if we don’t stop it this week then they will speak to the council to register a ‘formal complaint’.

I don’t intend to stop, and am aware we are acting perfectly legally. Is it me, or they are batshit?!

Well I was one of the people who mentioned she should check into tax, merely because if she has annoyed neighbours and they are vindictive, they may try going that route, what's wrong with that?

And I do know about Tax. If you’re just flogging your old clothes on Vinted or eBay, HMRC isn’t interested. They only care if you’re buying stock to resell or running it like a business. Clearing out your wardrobe is not taxable — it’s just decluttering with benefits.

In the OPs case, and I make it clear here as I did in my post that I admire her entrepreneurial spirit, she is selling electricity she would not normally use herself and as such she is a business seller, now how much she sells, could mean its not relevant, I don't know, so I advised she should check it to ensure her neighbours can't use it against her.

If you know so much about tax you'd know that you can earn up to £1k a year AFTER expenses doing just this kind of thing. That would be in addition to a separate non property related side hustle
People like you always sound jealous, not concerned. A bit like the people who criticise fat women merely out of 'concern' for their health.

I love all the people coming on farting on about paying taxes and business rates who don’t have a clue about how this works.

I hope they all pay tax on selling things on Vinted or eBay.

I live in a lovely cul de sac with a few shops and restaurants around the corner, unfortunately the last few years customers and delivery drivers think its ok to constantly come here and disturb our peace due to no parking there and hang around having loud conversations by my house. It's really annoying, we have no privacy anymore and worked hard to buy our house so understand why your neighbours are complaining. I wouldn't be happy if some woman was talking like that outside either, we all have kids and to be honest she sounds like the riff raff you mentioned.

how do they invade your privacy?

I meant no offence by the riff raff comment. For context, it’s widely known that the crime and unemployment hotspots are the two main estates in our town. I’m not sure there’s a polite way to term it to be honest - certainly not what my DH refers to them as (benefit scroungers and the dregs of society!).

Anyway, I’m ducking out now. Thanks to those who’ve replied, both in a serious and comical manner. I never knew there was so many law experts on MN! I guess that explains why the site is so awash with six figure earners.

Based on this comment, I suspect your neighbours simply dislike you.

I suppose it depends on who the "annoying neighbours" are - is it the ones running the business with noisy and antisocial customers and lots of activity or the ones complaining about this?

?

No one is discussing a business with noisy or antisocial behaviour.

Again that depends on your perspective and the behaviour of the people using the charger.

It's a pain but annoying neighbours are the worst so I'd try to placate them to keep things amicable.

Then just tell neighbours its all registered legally, but out of courtesy to them (not because you have to), you've asked clients to be quiet and as respectful as possible.

Maybe Air b'n' b regulation is different where you are but in Scotland you absolutely do have to make sure your guests behave. It's part of your licence conditions, not an optional extra.

Inspired me to add my charger as we don't use it now we don't have an ev anymore! Really surprised they're bothered, I would think lots of people come and go on a normal street nowadays (delivery drivers, post people, carers, cleaners, pet sitters etc) we actually rent our garage conversion as an air bnb and none of our neighbours seem to care (they've not mentioned it anyway!) I think it might be worth, if you are bothered, messaging any "clients" who regularly use you, and just asking them (we do the same with the air bnb) "please be aware we are in a residential area and if possible please keep noise to a minimum and don't leave any rubbish or cigarette butts nearby, out of respect to our neighbours". Then just tell neighbours its all registered legally, but out of courtesy to them (not because you have to), you've asked clients to be quiet and as respectful as possible.

I wouldn’t be thrilled at my neighbours doing what you are doing either

Can you say why?

PorridgeAndSyrup · 10/04/2026 16:54

From your neighbour’s point of view, I don’t see how it’s any different from “outsiders” Parking their car on the street, or say a neighbour having carers pop in at various times of the day, etc. Your neighbour sounds like the sort of person who thinks they own the street outside their house. I don’t know how people get like that, I presume they don’t have much else going on in their life… I hope I never get like that.

RawBloomers · 09/04/2026 23:05

Declare it to whom?

I doubt they're making enough to warrant it. Hmrc allows £1000 per year in trading allowance earnings (vinted, eBay, a craft hobby you occasionally sell etc) that you don't need to declare or get taxed on. Looking at these websites you make a few hundred pounds a year, it's not a business, it's a side hustle and unless it goes over £1000 a year then it doesn't need declaring at all.

Resorting to insults to prove a point?

Stating facts that are very obvious to anyone reading your responses.

ThatMauveMaker · 10/04/2026 09:01

Many of us will have a covenant in our Deeds not to use our house for business purposes. They could try and enforce that through solicitors or your Freeholder (if your house is Leasehold - if your house is Leasehold I would stop as they can take action against you for a breach of covenant) on top of any policies you are breaking re business rates etc. I don't know what registrations you would need to run this business from home, so research and make sure it's water tight.

It’s all above board. I’d understand if it was riff raff from the local estates (not that they tend to drive EV’s!) turning up, but it’s professionals who are causing no harm whatsoever.

What a horrid comment! I'd feel like complaining on that basis alone.

Riff raff? Ffs.

PloddingAlong21 · 10/04/2026 06:48

Genuinely struggling to understand why people could take issue with this. It’s 2-3 people per day. Unless people are living in a remote area in the countryside, majority of people will have at least 2-3 people walking down their street. It hardly causes snooping or increased crime rates. I guess if anyone does burgle you, at least you’ll be able to see their number play when you report it. Furthermore, the car is on the OPs own drive. If it was on the street taking a spot (illegal but annoying) or blocking someone, I could get it. However it’s quietly sat with the engine off on her property. How on earth can anyone be annoying or dislike it? I literally come and go in my own home 2-3 times a day. They park up and walk away. It isn’t noisy.

I would let your neighbours crack on and complain. The council won’t care. Oooo EV drivers charging their car. High noise activity that. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Spangers · 09/04/2026 20:58

Gosh about 100 people walk up or down my street everyday, some of you would have a heart attack 🤣

There’s even at dentist at the end of the road 😱

”Faints”

On dear have I upset you or do you always resort to insults to prove your point? Read it yourself or if that's too much for you contact your local authority and let them educate you on change of premises use and planning

What?? Seriously are you high

Dogmum74 · 09/04/2026 20:31

Well as long as you have declared your property as a business and are filing tax returns for the income you are getting yup, perfectly legal

Declare it to whom?

Droplet789 · 09/04/2026 21:00

i thought it would be an easy YANBU. But I’d continue doing it and just deal with anything that comes from the council.
