To want my birthday presents gift wrapped?

StuntNun · 07/04/2026 14:08

It’s my birthday tomorrow, a milestone one, and there are currently at least thirteen cardboard boxes, mostly from Amazon, stashed around the house. My mum is trying to persuade my DH that he shouldn’t gift wrap the presents but just let me open the cardboard boxes myself instead since “it will still be a surprise.”
Hmm

So, AIBU to prefer my birthday presents wrapped up rather than open a stack of cardboard boxes on my big day?

Unless your milestone birthday is your 1st, then opening boxes will be opening your presents. You have too much time on your hands if you think your husband should open the boxes and wrap your presents. And just how spoilt are you?

Eh? What sort of a home do you come from. Presents always get wrapped. It's normal in most UK households (saying most because there's always someone).

Opening an Amazon box doesn't fill anyone with pleasure.

Yes. I would expect my presents to be wrapped. It’s my birthday Thursday and my dh is fab at presents. He’s already given me one early as he was so excited and wanted to see my face. It was a mulberry bag, a Bayswater mini. Bloody gorgeous. We are on holiday and him and the kids have all sorts planned.

Umm can you lone him out for a few days if I promise to take good care of him ?
It's my birthday in a few weeks and u don't have a DH/P

Happy birthday for Thursday, it sounds like you’re going to have a lovely day.

Thank you. I read about the awful men on here (and was previously married to one) so I know how amazing he is. We have just comeback from dinner and he’s told me he’s happy that I’m happy and the kids are happy. He’s bloody lush x

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! It’s also my birthday tomorrow, however, my husband hasn’t even bought me anything yet. No card/no gifts.
Ive Put my foot down this year and text him a list;
“Buy/get someone to make a birthday cake x flavour Y icing
Cards from you and the children - oldest isn’t old enough to buy one yet - please take the kids to buy a card.
Decide if we are having a meal at Z or if we are having a Chinese from A at home.
I would like a lie in until 9am, then a cuppa in bed.
Everything else is optional, but think of what I did for you on your birthday or the kids birthdays (present table, balloons, banners, paid for a weekend away & arranged childcare, organised a surprise escape room etc”
Im not asking for him to do everything, but just show some care! I didn’t even get a card for Mother’s Day because “it snuck up on me” despite me telling him 12 times and physically handing him the stuff for his own mother….

I would never acknowledge his birthday, Fathers Day or Christmas until he grew up and appreciated you. I’d also stop doing his laundry and cooking for him. Some men need to be shown and not told!

if you have to force someone to make an effort then what’s the point!?

I don’t like wrapping paper - creating waste for a few seconds of "looking pretty". Kind of vanity waste.

I agree that getting the shipping box isn't really exciting.

We use a bunch of old scarfs instead of wrapping paper.

That sounds beautiful.

YANBU at all!

Opening amazon boxes is an everyday chore. Opening birthday presents is a symbol that someone you love cares about putting a little bit of effort into making something nice for you on your birthday.

This . It’s also just lazy not to present gifts nicely .

It’s easier to just do it whilst I do my mums. I appreciate DH doesn’t have as much time as me (I can often bung a card and gift voucher in with the food shop, which he doesn’t do) but honestly, I wouldn’t hear the end of it from MIL if he didn’t get her something.
Shortly after our wedding, she gave me a list of names and dates with “birthday/anniversary/new baby” etc on it. I asked what she’s given me that for and she told me it was “DH side of the family’s special events list so I could add it to my diary to make sure he didn’t miss anyone out” I handed it to DH straight away and she got super shirty with me and told me it was “the woman’s job to deal with all that once we were married” I laughed and just ignored it, DH got the message and either does or doesn’t do his family birthday cards etc, I don’t know.
However, I realised when I was shopping for my mum that he hadn’t gotten her a card/gift for Mother’s Day so it was no problem
to shove it in with the food shop.

Such a horribly indulged man, hence he doesn’t bother doing anything for you!

He’s not so busy he can’t get you a card and present for Mother’s Day? Moonpig and Amazon?

Why on earth would you be buying another woman’s Mother’s Day stuff when you don’t get anything?

It feels so much more special if the presents are in a gift bag or wrapped up. I open Amazon parcels pretty much every week and being presented with a bunch of brown boxes would definitely make me feel a little crestfallen. As PP have said, some of them might already be in gift bags inside the box. I am with you OP, the outer boxes should be removed. If not wrapped, the contents should be so, or put in a spare gift bag (I always keep mine exactly for this purpose). I do this for all my family, I would never chuck them a pile of Amazon boxes!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 07/04/2026 17:26

Don’t invite mum for Xmas or Birthday again! Text DH saying I love how we are an ‘unwrap presents’ household and I hope you don’t listen to her!

steff13 · 07/04/2026 17:25

MyLimeGuide · 07/04/2026 15:59

He is being lazy. But men in general hate wrapping presents, they deem it as womens work. Maybe your mum will secretly wrap them for you?

How is he being lazy? OP did not say that he wasn't going to wrap the presents, she said her mother was trying to convince him not to wrap the presents. That would imply that he usually does it. Men are not always in the wrong.

Coconutter24 · 07/04/2026 17:24

itsmycheese · 07/04/2026 16:22

God you people are joyless! Why even buy the presents - they're married, it's all coming out of the same pot? Actually why bother celebrating birthdays, you're going to die in a few years anyway?!

OP, I agree with you - opening boxes and opening presents are totally different things. You aren't spoilt or ungrateful, you just want to have a little fun - don't let mumsnet silly billies or your mum spoil it for you.

If you bothered to read my comments I’m not calling op ungrateful

DH is actually out today but I suspect he will tell my mum he doesn’t mind wrapping presents and pack me off for a long bath to get me out of the way this evening. To be fair to my mum, my dad used to do all the present buying and wrapping when I was a child so she never had to do anything - from her point of view the presents miraculously appeared already wrapped on birthdays and at Christmas.

I suppose if she’s never done them that’s probably because she isn’t bothered about wrapping presents or bothered how she receives them. She’s probably trying to save your DH a job but if he wants to wrap them good on him, especially if it buys you an hours peace in the bath lol

I don’t think spoilt is the right word…. Ungrateful is probably right

Don't be ridiculous.

OP, you don't have to have low standards just because too many (mostly women) do. I don't think many people particularly enjoy wrapping, but it's about putting a bit of effort in. Me and my partner wrap for each other unless they are already in pretty boxes and I do not enjoy it. I'd feel like a right lazy git if I just handed him Amazon boxes and I'd think the same of him too.

Violetparis · 07/04/2026 16:59

God there are some joyless people on this thread. I'd want presents wrapped rather than just Amazon parcels too OP. Nice colourful paper - normal wrapping paper or tissue.

YANBU, OP! Even if they were put into a gift bag it would look much nicer than a pile of brown boxes!

Actually we have a load of Amazon gift bags in the loft from Christmas so that would be a great idea. Better for the environment and much quicker but still nicer than opening shipping boxes.

Seems like a spectacular waste of time and wrapping paper to wrap them at this stage.

It’s not my fault that he has procrastinated. He always leaves things to the last minute.

Incidentally, my mum has wrapped her birthday present for me. It’s squashy - I suspect pyjamas. 😊

I would be more bothered that most of my presents for a significant birthday are from Amazon.

13 of them as well. You don't know it's a snide or not, so it's probably better they were opened before given.

I think I'd prefer 1 decent present than a load of clutter. But some people like a pile.

Tell your mother to stfu or you'll give her Christmas gifts in a bin bag.
