AIBU to think my adult life is average rather than privileged?

Prepared to be told otherwise and of course I know I have had some degree of privilege. As a child I had a good education and opportunities and I accept that is probably classed as ‘privileged.’ But I don’t think that overall my adult life is, I think it’s pretty standard.

Had 50k towards house deposit (everyone I know had had financial support to buy a house)

Gifted 2k to 3k a year (again over birthday and Christmas etc this would seem usual to my friends)

DD has (small) house on trust from grandparents. I only know one other family who haven’t been in a position to make some provision for their grandchildren, not necessarily a house but cash etc

Earnings 71k, again this is of course not a low amount but in terms of household income it’s not a lot these days.

These posts are uncalled for. For context my two best friends, one was bought a home outright when she was 30 and the other was gifted 200k! That’s two people from different walks of life ( they don’t know each other)

Your post is tone deaf in the current economic climate.

Neemon · 05/04/2026 21:47

71K is a bloody lot actually.

nocoolnamesleft · 05/04/2026 21:47

I consider myself a privileged adult. And yet I was not gifted a house deposit, nor yet granted a house in trust. I saved up for my own deposit. You're definitely privileged.

EwwPeople · 05/04/2026 21:47

All that money and privilege and you are massively uneducated, ignorant and unable to at least use Google. What a waste!

ThatGoldLeader · 05/04/2026 21:47

Have you ever considered that you are perhaps only friends with similarly privileged people and that perhaps not everyone has parents that can just give them 50k for a house deposit?! 🤦‍♀️

Dymaxion · 05/04/2026 21:46

Given there’s Council housing why would I think four people would be in a studio?!

In 1980 when the population of the UK was 56 million there were 5.5 million local authority housing units. In 2025 there were 1.57 million with a population of 69million, do you see now why there might be a bit of an issue ?
Add to that the cost of buying a house, 25 years ago I could have bought in my local area in the North, a fairly standard 2 bed terrace for 50k , now it would cost 200k minimum, and when I say bought, I mean as a single person, 3 x salary. Now you need at least two average salaries, plus you need to be able to save whilst paying out at least a third of your wage in rent.

@BendingSpoons thank you, you’re one of the few posters who has actually educated me on this thread! I will look it up

You are welcome. You can look it up yourself but as a starting point:

https://www.merton.gov.uk/council-tax-benefits-and-housing/getting-a-new-home/apply-social-housing/bands-and-waiting-times-social-housing#

A LA at random - they house 2% of the people on their list each year and say 'many people never get an offer'

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · 05/04/2026 21:46

I have had a similar experience to you - gifted £40k for house deposit, grandparents contributed around £5k for last year's summer holiday. Earn over £80k. I consider myself VERY privileged compared to the vast majority of the population despite many of my friends being in similar situations to me (since I met them at Grammar school and University its not surprising). I am acutely aware that my situation is not average, or the norm

Tequilamockinbird · 05/04/2026 21:46

You are very privileged, OP.

i have never had a penny from my mother, and my father died penniless so no inheritance from him either. I was a single teenage mother who rented for 12 years and worked 3 jobs in order to save for a deposit. It was unbelievably tough.

nixon1976 · 05/04/2026 21:46

Oh now I’ve read OPs comments on council housing and I realise now that clearly some people are that dumb…

MrsOni · 05/04/2026 21:46

Finchell · 05/04/2026 21:38

@BendingSpoons can they not go to the council for proper housing? That must be horrendous especially for children

The waiting list for council housing in my area is 3 years.

So yeah, sucks, doesn't it.

These threads should be blocked for being tedious.

@Genxhausted genuinely, how? I don’t live in a particularly affluent area. I mix with a range of people from different backgrounds. Not sure what more someone can do to not be in a bubble as you call it

When do the kids go back from Easter holidays? These posts are getting more and more ridiculous. Just in case it’s real: most people will be lucky if they ever see £50K at once in their lives, nor does a magical money tree grow in their yard and give them an extra 2-3K a year when they’re already earning £40K+ over the average UK salary. And if EVERYONE you know had help buying a house, then no, your friends are not a varied bunch. Make friends with someone who rents or even flat shares; it’ll be your good deed for the year 😇

Woahtherehoney · 05/04/2026 21:41

I honestly think OP is just trolling now - next they’ll say “why can’t homeless people just go to the council and get given a house” - nobody who is reasonably well educated as OP implied they are can be that blind to the world they live in.

Think she’s pretty much said this.

Shallana · 05/04/2026 21:44

Are you actually serious? My friend group are all university educated professionals, not one was gifted a house deposit.

However, most of us were privileged to be able to live with our parents during our twenties to be able to save for a deposit - I imagine that is the way most people manage to save a deposit. Only one of my friend group were able to go from renting to buying and that was due to inheritance from losing a parent.

moleeye · 05/04/2026 21:44

I cannot believe you are this dim

You know this is not ‘average’.

JacknDiane · 05/04/2026 21:44

SuffolkBargeWoman · 05/04/2026 21:13

You are very privileged.
And either obtuse or a goady fucker.
Only you know which.

Nah, we know too

CypressGrove · 05/04/2026 21:44

If the OP isn't just trolling then she's above average in privilege but below average in intelligence - so swings and roundabouts.

MrsOni · 05/04/2026 21:43

Either you are being a goady fucker or are just completely detached from the reality of most people's lives in the uk,

Yes, you are privileged. No, most people in the country don't get a shitload of help from mummy and daddy to buy a house, thousands of pounds of gifts each yeah and fully funded education, not to mention the help your dd has got.

Megifer · 05/04/2026 21:43

LydiaFunnyGums · 05/04/2026 21:42

Are you for real OP? 🙄

Im 100% certain the answer is "no"

JulietteHasAGun · 05/04/2026 21:43

Finchell · 05/04/2026 21:37

@JulietteHasAGun i assumed available as the alternative is being homeless….

Omg, you’re unreal. Of course people are homeless, inc families with kids. Many more are in totally unsuitable accommodation so a family in a one bed flat.

FilthyforFirth · 05/04/2026 21:43

This reminds me of a scene from the film The Man Who Invented Christmas, someone is complaining to Dickens that WC people dont belong in books, he is a self made man blah blah blah and his wife meekly says 'well papa did gift us a very small paper mill'.

I am firmly middle class and our household income is £150ishk and we along with literally no one else in my MC circles were gifted a house, nor their kids.

Goady stealth boast post.

Bloozie · 05/04/2026 21:43

Christ on a bike.

I consider myself privileged. No one gave me £50k for a house. There is no house waiting in trust for my son. No one gives me thousands a year - I earn it.

You are DEFINITELY privileged. The definition of it. And you need to check it.

Thought you had a degree.

fouroclockrock · 05/04/2026 21:42

Are you joking? I dont earn anything like you. Im a teacher. I have never received more than about £150 in a year as gifts from family (combined). I have no trust funds or property to pass on to anyone. Your responses to people are 100% princess. Totally clueless and perhaps a bit spoiled. Oh, and totally clueless as to how many people in THIS COUNTRY survive. Do you have any idea about the private rental market?!?!?
