AIBU for blowing out my nephew’s birthday candles as a joke

My nephews 6th birthday party yesterday. He was struggling to blow all the candles out so I jokingly blew the remaining ones out for him. My sister went on a full on strop over it saying I ruined his moment. AIBU to think she’s completely over reacting?? She ended up relighting the candles for him to “have another go” making it a much bigger deal than it needed to be.

I didn’t want to but was pressured into going by said sister

Oh no, you had to celebrate your 6yr old nephews birthday! How terrible for you. Please never reproduce.

In the real world I’d probably say what you doing? Idiot! Then I’d move on.

Think the majority of posters on here are vile.
Imagine a group of bullies picking on one person and you’ve got this thread.

It’s a bit off but it doesn’t deserve the pages of mean girls.

Well you've also had your say right here, so what on earth is your point? You've added to it all.

Also, she asked for opinions. Victims of bullying don't ask to be bullied.

Thank you. I’m used to this behaviour with my sister so it’s like water off a duck’s back ☺️

It was a horrible thing to do to a child.

How embarrassing for you. Party attendees must think you are a total knob.

carly2803 · 06/04/2026 19:59

yeah dick move.

one of mine remembers some other kid blowing out his candles when he was 4. big big deal

Trishyb10 · 06/04/2026 19:47

I,m all for a joke but that was baaaaaaad….

Whatinthedoopla · 06/04/2026 19:43

You obviously don't have children yourself?

Otherwise I don't understand why you don't understand it's a dick move

southerngirl10 · 06/04/2026 19:37

I would be annoyed for a about half an hour, then remember you're my sister and it was a silly thing to do. Then I'd make us both a cup of tea and laugh about it while remembering there are far worse things that happen life.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/04/2026 19:34

Yeah it’s a shit thing to do, do you always make everything about you?

DumpedByText · 06/04/2026 19:32

You're obviously feeling guilty and yes you were a knob!

ASimpleLampoon · 06/04/2026 19:28

When my DD did this I was mortified, and apologized to both child and mother, who was actually very nice about it. DD was 3 at he time and mostly well behaved, and I'd been so focussed trying to make sure autistic DS didn't do anything too wild I didn't occur to me DD might do that.

Uricon2 · 06/04/2026 19:26

We had 80 candles on my grandmothers cake in 1975, when 80 was really old. She got most of them and and laughed and said 'help me!' Woe betide anyone who would have stepped in of their own accord when it wasn't their place and weren't asked.

You overstepped. From other posts about previous threads, I'd say take a very large step back in interactions with your sister's family.

SALaw · 06/04/2026 19:21

“Jokingly” implies you pretended to do it but you actually did it. For a 6 year old, blowing their candles out is a big deal.

cowandplough · 06/04/2026 19:14

Yes you were OTP

A horrid thing to do. My aunt used to do stuff like this, it was because she couldn’t stand not being the centre of attention

Definitely describes op

I sometimes wonder on here if some of the posts are a windup. Surely you know not to blow out a child’s candles.

permanently · 06/04/2026 19:07

I repeat my comment from your last thread about how you don’t care how your behaviour affects others!!

Poetnojo · 06/04/2026 18:59

AliceNotInChains · 05/04/2026 13:23

No I didn’t do it to annoy her, I did it because he was struggling to blow them all out and dare I say - deliberately struggling because everyone was laughing so I simply joined in on the joke. He did laugh when I did it.

Ah, so you didn't like the birthday boy getting some laughs and attention on his birthday so decided to rain on his parade. I guess some of the posters here are right about you, not happy unless you are the center of attention. Grow up op

We had a good day out today, funny how all those involved are now over it yet people on here are still burning up with fury over it 😂

Good for you.

Incidentally, for the first time since I came here, I have reported this thread; the nastiness aimed at you throughout has been ridiculous.

I am glad it hasn't bothered you. x

What OP did wasn’t great but there’s really no need to call her such a vile misogynist word.

You absolute dope. He’s 6. To him, blowing out his candles IS a big deal.

Obviously not.

Partypants83 · 06/04/2026 18:45

Hey, you're not listening.
It was a twattish thing to do.
Don't do it again.
Or make something about you when it isn't.
