AIBU for blowing out my nephew’s birthday candles as a joke

My nephews 6th birthday party yesterday. He was struggling to blow all the candles out so I jokingly blew the remaining ones out for him. My sister went on a full on strop over it saying I ruined his moment. AIBU to think she’s completely over reacting?? She ended up relighting the candles for him to “have another go” making it a much bigger deal than it needed to be.

Are you always an attention seeking that? At least you sister will have one less person to cater for next year.

Llamamaman · 05/04/2026 12:45

Was it not enough about you? poor baby…come here for a hug

Crispsandcola · 05/04/2026 12:45

You're not being unreasonable, you're being a total bitch and your sister was right.

FieryA · 05/04/2026 12:45

Why did you interfere? Not nice on your part.

Brewtiful · 05/04/2026 12:44

I find it hard to believe a 6 year old was laughing at his aunt blowing out his candles. You sound like you were just looking to be the centre of attention to be honest.

saraclara · 05/04/2026 12:43

What everyone else said. Dick move to make that about you.
You were lucky that he laughed. Most six year olds will have been waiting for that moment.

Givemeausernamepls · 05/04/2026 12:43

As if you needed to even ask. You took someone’s moment, even my 3 year old knows you don’t blow out other people’s candles!

Rainbowdottie · 05/04/2026 12:43

Is this real? No I don’t think it was a nice to do. Even if anyone were to blow out his candles , it should have been his mum giving him a helping hand gently.

Just to add nephew wasn’t even bothered, he laughed

Sure, Jan.

tealandteal · 05/04/2026 12:42

No sorry this isn’t kind. It’s different if they ask for help but at 6 they can usually do it by themselves.

OvernightBloats · 05/04/2026 12:41

You made blowing out the candles about you and how you felt. Who cares if he took his time blowing out the candles - that's part of the fun!

You were being very unreasonable. It was HIS birthday, not yours!

That is an extremely unusual response by a 6 yr old to this

MyAgileHedgehog · 05/04/2026 12:40

Even if he laughed it is still bad manners.

TheHouse · 05/04/2026 12:40

He may have laughed but it was about HIM not YOU.

Such a nob.

StationJack · 05/04/2026 12:40

You're a twat.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 05/04/2026 12:39

You absolute dope. He’s 6. To him, blowing out his candles IS a big deal.

As the saying goes, it’s only a joke if everyone involved finds it’s funny.

blowing the candles out on the birthday cake of a 6 year old makes you a knob. You need to apologise.

RunningJo · 05/04/2026 12:39

I’m team sister on this one, it was a twattish thing to do OP

VivX · 05/04/2026 12:39

Yes it was a twattish thing to do.

MovedlikeHarlowinMonteCarlo · 05/04/2026 12:38

I think this is fake but you sound like an attention seeker.

BeeCucumber · 05/04/2026 12:38

Yep - you are a twat.

OriginalSkang · 05/04/2026 12:38

Fucking horrible thing to do to a six year old

MyAgileHedgehog · 05/04/2026 12:37

It is poor form to blow a kids birthday candles out unless you are also 6 and you share a birthday. It is their birthday you should have let them have their moment in the spotlight.

Dinosweetpea · 05/04/2026 12:37

You were a dick.
