AIBU for blowing out my nephew’s birthday candles as a joke

AliceNotInChains · 05/04/2026 12:34

My nephews 6th birthday party yesterday. He was struggling to blow all the candles out so I jokingly blew the remaining ones out for him. My sister went on a full on strop over it saying I ruined his moment. AIBU to think she’s completely over reacting?? She ended up relighting the candles for him to “have another go” making it a much bigger deal than it needed to be.

It was kind of a dick move.

You’ve got it all wrong, @SergeantWrinkles❤️

It was a DICK MOVE @AliceNotInChains
It isn’t a joke unless it’s funny.
And you’re no comedian.

Well your post went down as well as blowing out the candles, and if you still think you are in the right then never have kids.
it was an arsehole move, kids need time to do the adult things. You were in the wrong and spoilt his moment and it will always be remembered by the kid.

Errr....FIVE days ago she agreed she had made a faux pas and she wouldn't do it again....I don't get why people are giving her such a bad time on this thread.

Such a cruel thing to do

AliceNotInChains · 06/04/2026 20:46

Im babysitting for her tonight, all is good now ☺️

Hahaha until the next argument over something silly and you run back to mumsnet.

It's obvious from your posts that you think your sister is annoying and you seem obliged to attend her events yet you're also pretending everything is fine while trying to act like what you did wants ridiculous and wrong.

We had a good day out today, funny how all those involved are now over it yet people on here are still burning up with fury over it 😂

And yet you're the one who came here ranting about her and blustering about how you wouldn't see her again after this outing which you have been forced to attend.

This all shows you're the problem here girl 😂 . Now everything is fine and dandy and it's mumsnet that is wrong 😂

nutbrownhare15 · 07/04/2026 17:52

That's a horrible thing to do

GabriellaFaith · 07/04/2026 16:37

It's not really a joke is it? Nothing funny about it. Spoilt his moment, potentially embarrassed him, ruined his parents precious childhood video, I literally can't think of anything hahaha. Sound more like you were impatient! I wouldnt be inviting you to my young childs birthday again.

Wellthisisdifficult · 07/04/2026 13:54

What a crappy thing to do, hopefully they won’t invite you again

CurlyGaelicGal · 07/04/2026 13:47

Would like to add some of the people posting on this thread are significantly more batshit than the OP

CurlyGaelicGal · 07/04/2026 13:45

I think it was a weird thing to do and you shouldn’t do it again, but your sister is making it into a bigger deal than she needs to given your nephew wasn’t upset.

What was your plan to upset him last night? Tell him Father Christmas isn’t real?

16 pages about 2 candles, or getting competitive with a 6 year old child, or having zero patience with a 6 year old child on their birthday or destroying a once a year fun opportunity, or attention seeking at a 6 year old's birthday party, or a second thread in close succession showing zero understanding of other people's feelings, or a second thread in close succession begging for negative attention seeking, or all of those at the same time .... take your pick.

And also, if I've understood OP's posts correctly, to make a passive aggressive point to her sister by spoiling a young child's special moment - OP apparently being annoyed that her sister has carefully organised her DS's party rather than just shrugging her shoulders, doing the bare minimum and leaving it to turn to chaos.

Northstar26 · 05/04/2026 12:36

Sounds like you were trying to be funny but don’t really understand children? It’s a big deal for him. Apologise and move on

This.
You shouldn't have done it

Lampzade · 07/04/2026 13:23

Op, you really need to grow up

autumn1638 · 07/04/2026 13:10

I think you probably missed that he’s six years old. You likely don’t have children and have no contact with children.

k8jr · 07/04/2026 10:10

Not your place. Think you'll have to suck this one up and apologise to them both.

levitational · 07/04/2026 09:41

AliceNotInChains · 06/04/2026 20:20

Thank you. I’m used to this behaviour with my sister so it’s like water off a duck’s back ☺️

It's clearly not "like water off a duck's back" to you - if it was, you wouldn't have bothered to post here.

Laserwho · 07/04/2026 09:39

He had already blown out 4 candles. He obviously wasn't struggling and only had 2 more to go. It was your impatience, it was your me me me attitude. What's wrong? Was it taking to long for you to get a slice of cake ?

JoeyJava · 07/04/2026 09:08

On the plus side, you'll never need to worry about doing it again 👍

Downunderduchess · 07/04/2026 06:29

I would assume you have very low emotional intelligence. A child’s birthday party is a big event for them. You doing something like that takes the attention away from the birthday boy and makes you look bad.

Zerosleep · 07/04/2026 01:12

Arsehole behaviour, you are definitely the twat in this situation.

An all time low with this thread.
The majority of posters have been like vultures, like someone else said, you would have thought she had eaten her nephew, not just blew a couple of candles out.
