£30 Easter budget

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 11:43

My friend just told me her and her husband spend £30 each on each other on Easter eggs.

She’d prefer a nicer one and some small bits and he’d prefer lots of mid sized ones so he had about 8 eggs.

AIBU to think this is insane?

They have no kids.

I think it’s quite sweet and romantic going all eastery.
They are obviously still in the first flush of love. Don’t worry, it’ll wear off over the years.

It feels a bit show off and what adult needs ten eggs from their partner? That isn’t including any they’ll get from other people.

They always go over the top with spending insane amounts at Christmas too.

I also think it's crazy but I also know that dh and I are super frugal and mean with money so I think I'm the extreme opposite 😅 I think if that's what makes them happy and they can afford it though, why not? Maybe if dh and I weren't saving hard for other things we would buy each other more gifts. We also don't have kids (not by choice) so sometimes you have to make up for that in silly ways (speaking for myself, not for anyone else)

ruethewhirl · 05/04/2026 13:02

It's called having fun OP. Adults are allowed to do it too. The fun things in life are not just for children.

Smartiepants79 · 05/04/2026 12:04

But it’s their money and their choice. Why do you care? It’s not drugs!

Imagine the horror if it was £30 spent on hash! 😬🤣🤣🤣

This is 2 adults buying each other what they fancy, what you buy your kids isn't really relevant.

Exactly, surely the best part of being an adult is having your own money to buy as many Easter eggs as you like - and nobody telling you that you can only have "a few pieces of one today, save the rest for other days so you don't make yourself sick" 🙄😁

Okay I accept IABU about this but I don’t know how to explain it.

I do love her dearly but she’s so over the top it just feels like everything has to be an event or an occasion and is very performative.

I asked her what she’s doing today and she said they’ve had mini egg pancakes for breakfast and are decorating Easter cookies later. I refuse to believe most normal adults without children are sat there decorating Easter themed cookies amongst piles of Easter eggs with their husband.

they live in the real world.

It doesn't sound like you love her dearly. It sounds like her having fun irritates you intensely.

Have you considered that she's on Mumsnet and may see your dreadful behaviour slagging her off for having a good time?

InterestedDad37 · 05/04/2026 12:58

Chocolate is no substitute for love. Actually, I take that back, of course it is 😂🍫

I got my 3 DC standard eggs-one each under £5 Anything more is excessive IMO. The chocolate used is normally shit

Well yes, if you buy cheap chocolate it will likely be shit. I would imagine the point of buying more expensive ones is that they are much nicer.

I think this is it. £60 on Easter eggs is insane for the two of them? Especially to have a pile of about 15 eggs just sat there? It seems so wasteful.

What particular issue is it causing you? I ask this genuinely as I'm struggling to understand why you're so upset by it?

yet, you’ve decided to criticise everything she does.

TeflonBoot · 05/04/2026 12:53

What's wrong with buying your spouse an egg? My DH bought one for me, I didn't buy for him as he isn't that bothered about having one but I treat him in other ways.

Is the real problem that they don't have children? Do you think child free adults should just sit in misery all year round?

You can live in the real world and still have some whimsy. Why not?

Frugalgal · 05/04/2026 12:51

It all sounds quite infantilised but each to their own! There's a lot worse things they could be doing.

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 12:01

I buy my parents an egg.

Well that’s nice for your parents but your friends don’t have children to buy them one.
Don’t really get what you mean by wasteful as they’re just sat there? Do they not eat them?

RisingSunn · 05/04/2026 12:46

Its their money and they enjoy it!

BashfulClam · 05/04/2026 12:45

So she’s not showing off, you asked her. You sound like a jealous person, it’s radiating off you. Grow up

BeOchreDog · 05/04/2026 12:45

Why is decorating Easter biscuits weird? We had a gingerbread house decorating contest every year before our children were born. It was a bit of fun and something to do together!

CoyGoldenKoi · 05/04/2026 12:44

You're probably right that most adults aren't decorating Easter cookies etc.
But it's harmless and affects no-one else if that's what they want to do and what makes them happy, so get your nose out of their business.

Why does everyone need to subscribe to some joyless and regulated version of "normal" that you've decreed for them?

Also, nothing you've said suggests she's performative in any way. You've asked her questions, she's answered, and you've gotten stroppy and superior about her answers. All a you problem.

I wouldn't mind that. 🤣 I suppose if they aren't going into debt why not?

MovedlikeHarlowinMonteCarlo · 05/04/2026 12:42

It's a miserable life if we only ever get what we need.

Nothing wrong with treats.

tealandteal · 05/04/2026 12:41

Before we had kids my husband bought me a hotel chocolat Easter egg, it cost a lot but he wanted to treat me and could afford it. This year we each got a creme egg. If it makes them happy why not?

Doggymummar · 05/04/2026 12:40

Why do people care what others do? We don't buy eggs, but we were out early to car boot and I bought my partner a burger, which was £7.50. scandalous
