£30 Easter budget

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 11:43

My friend just told me her and her husband spend £30 each on each other on Easter eggs.

She’d prefer a nicer one and some small bits and he’d prefer lots of mid sized ones so he had about 8 eggs.

AIBU to think this is insane?

They have no kids.

So jealous of people who have more than you in every way. More personality, more money, more sense of fun, more love in their hearts. You sound like a mean spirited envious woman. You're lucky she's still your friend - if she reads this post she may not be anymore.

Okay I accept IABU about this but I don’t know how to explain it.

I do love her dearly but she’s so over the top it just feels like everything has to be an event or an occasion and is very performative.

I asked her what she’s doing today and she said they’ve had mini egg pancakes for breakfast and are decorating Easter cookies later. I refuse to believe most normal adults without children are sat there decorating Easter themed cookies amongst piles of Easter eggs with their husband.

they live in the real world.

This is THEIR real world and it's nothing to do with you. You don't sound like you like her much so I suggest you distance yourself. For their sake.

SusanChurchouse · 05/04/2026 13:37

Some of the posher eggs (hotel chocolat for example) are around £30 so I can see that. £30 worth of cheap eggs is basically just a lot of packaging. Very inefficient chocolate to cardboard ratio. Though with the state of Cadburys these days it might be hard to tell the difference.

YABU now I need to go eat the chocolate my sister gave me.

Hang on. Not including eggs they'll get from other people? I dont think I've ever bought an adult an easter egg apart from dh. How many eggs from other people will they get? Fascinating.

I got one for my mom, my elderly cousin (I am the only family member who still sees her for various reasons) and my partner.

I have been given one by my mom and my brother.

I don't think it's that unusual for adults to buy each other eggs, and there are certainly several in the shops that seem to me to be marketed towards adults.

Americasfavouritefightingfrenchman · 05/04/2026 13:35

My OH & I used to do stuff like this pre kids and now we do similar with our kids. My brother and his wife used to join in with us as did my parents (I mean they still do but now it’s aimed primarily at the kids)
I also fondly recall the Christmas we went for a walk and were spotted by a family of all adults doing a silly hat competition who asked if we would come in, have a drink, & judge a winner.
Sometimes it’s just nice to be a bit silly or to enjoy the kind of stuff you did as a kid in the holidays. I very much doubt she’s doing it to show anyone anything. It will just be something that gives her joy

It feels a bit show off and what adult needs ten eggs from their partner? That isn’t including any they’ll get from other people.

They always go over the top with spending insane amounts at Christmas too.

How is it any of your concerns though?

I love curvy chocolate. Maybe they do too?

wandawaves · 05/04/2026 13:34

You sound jealous OP.

Quite the opposite to the conversation DH and I had yesterday - “Can I just check you haven’t got me any eggs?” “No, of course not, why have you?” “No” 🤣🤣😂

edited to say… we do treat ourselves/each other to nice things. Just not on this occasion!!

Edited

Same here, and a similar conversation for Valentines and our wedding anniversary

rainbowunicorn · 05/04/2026 13:29

I feel sorry for your friend OP. How horrible for her that someone she thinks of as a close friend comes on to mumsnet to start a very unkind thread about her. I hope she clocks soon that you dont like her much and distances herself from you.

DJSteves · 05/04/2026 13:29

I bought my adult son the Pokémon coffee beans from Grind. Bought me and DH loads of mini eggs and Malteser bunnies. Will spend my money as I wish

FluffyDiplodocus · 05/04/2026 13:29

Bloody hell, grown adults spending their own disposable income on things they want? Outrageous!!

YourWildAmberSloth · 05/04/2026 13:26

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 12:11

I think this is it. £60 on Easter eggs is insane for the two of them? Especially to have a pile of about 15 eggs just sat there? It seems so wasteful.

I'm sure they will eat them eventually. You don't sound like a 'friend'. You sound judgmental and jealous? Everybody spends money on things that others wouldn't. Most wouldn't create a thread to slag their 'friend' off for doing so.
Sounds like you don't even like her, let alone 'love her dearly'.

Not what I would do as an adult but hardly equivalent to executing kittens or taking smack, is it? Harmless, it makes them happy and preferable to spending Easter whinging on MN about a 'friend' doing something that impacts you not at all.

Same with the eggs. I got one from my (60s) brother that probably cost that much, sent him and his family a simnel cake.

Some people celebrate things.

Maybe she just really likes Easter
I cant really be bothered with it and im a bit ill with a cough and cold
And have never had much of sweet tooth but if somone wants to go overboard with eggs and activities, thats their perogative.

gostickyourheadinapig · 05/04/2026 13:17

I think Easter eggs are an expensive way of buying inferior chocolate, but it's not really my business what anyone else does with their personal spending money.

What are YOU doing today OP? Have you got all your family coming round for Easter dinner followed by chocolate eggs? Are you going out to a nice restaurant to celebrate? Just wondered what you did at Easter.

WhineAndWine1 · 05/04/2026 13:13

@Okayfolks you seem a bit bitter. Are you a bit jealous that your DP doesn’t do this stuff with you?

My husband and I often bake and cook together. We have also decorated biscuits as a competition. Both of us try to keep busy, enjoy life and find pleasure in the small things. What do you think she should be doing on Easter Sunday?

So rude and nasty to start a thread bitching about your friend and inciting others to do the same. I hope they don't see the thread but I doubt they will as it doesn't sound like they'll be on here. They sound happy together and you sound jealous and bitter.

But she does love her dearly!

Why are you bringing need into it?

I don't need the cup of tea my DS just made me but I'm really enjoying it.

Unpaidviewer · 05/04/2026 13:05

I'm a bit tight and wouldn't want to buy easter eggs based on the price by weight or the type of chocolate used to make them. They just seem to be a rip off. Most are nestle or Cadbury which doesn't taste right either.

But I don't judge others for enjoying them. Its just chocolate and most people enjoy that.

But if that's how they want to spend their money then so what?

DP buys me a mother's day present and guess what, we don’t even have any children.

They could spend a similar amount of money going out for a meal at a mediocre chain restaurant, going to a cheap spa or any other discretionary spend. As long as they're not asking you to pay for it or moaning about being skint then what's it matter to you?

Violetparis · 05/04/2026 13:03

I think it is excessive but it's up to them how they spend their money.
