£30 Easter budget

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 11:43

My friend just told me her and her husband spend £30 each on each other on Easter eggs.

She’d prefer a nicer one and some small bits and he’d prefer lots of mid sized ones so he had about 8 eggs.

AIBU to think this is insane?

They have no kids.

My husband would be. He bloody loves Easter eggs.

But £30? That is a pretty low bar - it's like half a bottle of just about drinkable wine.

RoastLambs · 05/04/2026 14:14

I think it’s stranger to buy your mammy an egg. Why don’t you get divorced and leave your kids, then you can start a new life making pancakes and buying Easter things.

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 12:01

I buy my parents an egg.

Some might think that ‘insane’ too!

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 12:11

I think this is it. £60 on Easter eggs is insane for the two of them? Especially to have a pile of about 15 eggs just sat there? It seems so wasteful.

Does he not eat them then? Its not wasteful if he eats them, doesn't matter how long it takes. It's only seeming like showing off if you somehow compare it to your own way of thinking and lifestyle. Which you obviously are, they don't have kids so they will have more disposable income. If they can afford it why not, I find it so odd that some adults think these seasonal treats and enjoyment should cease when they grow up! We aren't long on this earth, a bit of expensive chocolate for a couple who that eachother is no biggy.

JLou08 · 05/04/2026 14:11

I don't care how other couples decide to gift each other. I struggle to understand why anyone would care.

I know what you mean, Op. Of course people can choose to spend thousands if they want and everyone on MN can go “well they earned it, if they want to buy chocolate eggs instead of going on holiday, what’s it to you?” but I will privately be thinking that those people and all who agree with it are insane.

i think people who suffer horrible experiences at airports to get on holiday or sit in traffic jams are insane.....we each choose our own insanity

henlake7 · 05/04/2026 14:11

It sounds lot to spend on eggs but I suppose if you are doing posh ones it isnt alot.
Besides they are no crazier then me....I dont even have a partner and I bought myself 2 choccy eggs (single people need chocolate too!).

Literally nobody is jealous of someone being given £30 of easter eggs.

My husband would be. He bloody loves Easter eggs.

sonjadog · 05/04/2026 14:09

You are sounding rather joyless and miserable, OP. It's their income, and if they want to spend it on things that they find frivolous and fun, then good for them.

wandawaves · 05/04/2026 13:34

Shinyhappyapple · 05/04/2026 14:09

I think couples in a relationship without children are probably more likely to treat each other (or themselves maybe?). It’s just when you’ve got kids, a limited budget and limited time, these things tend to go out of the window. I guess if they weren’t big chocolate fans they would have bought each other different gifts.

my advice to you is to stay off social media

Diosmonet · 05/04/2026 14:06

Your friend spent her own money on her partner and he did the same, and you, as her friend, took to MN to basically bitch about it - after you had asked her!!

I would have a look at why you feel this level of unpleasantness towards your friend. You seem envious of something. I think most people wouldn't even register something like this.

Come back, OP.

I want to know where she's buying eight mid-sized Easter eggs for under £30 in total.

Okay I accept IABU about this but I don’t know how to explain it.

I do love her dearly but she’s so over the top it just feels like everything has to be an event or an occasion and is very performative.

I asked her what she’s doing today and she said they’ve had mini egg pancakes for breakfast and are decorating Easter cookies later. I refuse to believe most normal adults without children are sat there decorating Easter themed cookies amongst piles of Easter eggs with their husband.

they live in the real world.

Just to add, maybe reflect on why they may do this. Maybe they just genuinely enjoy it. Might not be your cup of tea but their choice. Maybe it is ‘performative’ and if so why might they do that? It’s likely to be a lot more deep rooted than just showing off. I say this kindly but unless there is some other context to this there no reason for you to be bothered about this at all. Best wishes.

Why do you “refuse” to believe it?
I have a baby, he’s not arsed about Easter. For the last few Easter’s my boyfriend and I have enjoyed making Easter egg cheesecake where you put the cheesecake filling inside half an Easter egg. We decorate them with mini eggs and malteaser bunnies and then gobble them up. Are we also not “normal adults” like your friend?

Bestfootforward11 · 05/04/2026 13:57

Think it’s up to them really. I think most people likely spend money on things others would think is a bit mad. You do you and leave others to how they want to do things. Don’t let this kind of thing take up your headspace, life is too short! Best wishes.

Why is it wasteful? Do you think they’ll end up in the bin? I doubt it. Even if it takes a good few weeks to eat them, why does it matter? Why shouldn’t the eggs just be “sat there,” knowing they’ll be eaten soon?

Im a teacher and always get a LOT of chocolate at Christmas and when we break up for summer. I love it. Some of it can be “sat there” for a couple of weeks but it always gets eaten and enjoyed. It’s never wasted.

How is she making a performance out of it though? She didn’t message you out of the blue it sure off their Easter fun. You asked her what she was doing today, and she answered you.

My boyfriend is 45, I’m 36. We do stuff like that. Why are you so miserable?

Isn't all food 'just sitting there' until we eat it?! I've got a bag of potatoes currently just sitting there in the kitchen, but I'd hope that wasn't a reason for any of my 'friends' to take to MN to slag me off, while claiming to love me dearly, but.
They chose to spend £30 each of their own money to treat the other to a seasonally appropriate present. It's hardly the last days of Rome.

JohnBullshit · 05/04/2026 13:54

Wow. You really need to chill about how other people spend their money.
Good chocolate is expensive these days. I spent around the £50 mark on two small boxes of chocolates and a chocolate duck. It wasn't even the most expensive chocolatier around, but it's the one that has the best chocolate for novelty shapes. Didn't tell all my pals about it, right enough, but I don't think they'd stoop to slagging me off on a public forum.

ParmaVioletTea · 05/04/2026 13:47

You sound quite judgey @Okayfolks about them spending money "when they don't have kids."

It's a revolutionary idea, I know, but people without children are allowed to eat Easter eggs.

Ilikesundays · 05/04/2026 13:46

It’s their life. If that’s what makes them happy it’s not for you to judge them.

I mean, I agree the cookies thing is weird, but each to their own - it's not hurting anyone. If I suggested to my boyfriend that we decorate Easter cookies together he would think I had gone insane, but different strokes for different folks....

You say 'performative" - who do you feel they are performing this for? Do they stock it on social media?

Surely if they do, most people would just think, that's weird, grown adults doing an Easter activity aimed at kids. It's not like everyone will be seeing it and jealously envying them their sexy glamorous lifestyle....

I just don't know why it gets to you that much! And yeah, I wouldn't spend £60 on eggs myself, but it's not the worst extravagance ever. Pretty sure there are some lush looking ones in Hotel Chocolat that cost that much just for one, and some people must buy them.

My boyfriend is far from an extravagant spender, and he told me that last year the egg he got his mom was £30. It's just not that much to spend on an occasional treat. If you had said they spent £600, then I would hear you.....
