£30 Easter budget

Okayfolks · 05/04/2026 11:43

My friend just told me her and her husband spend £30 each on each other on Easter eggs.

She’d prefer a nicer one and some small bits and he’d prefer lots of mid sized ones so he had about 8 eggs.

AIBU to think this is insane?

They have no kids.

I think it's lovely. I am not sure why I just think it's the cutest thing. I LOVE chocolate and would love lots of eggs but my husband likes sweets so I get him an egg and then nice Easter sweets. It's £30, makes them happy, is thoughtful and tailored to them and it's hurting no one. Crack on I say - pun intended! 🤣

It feels a bit show off and what adult needs ten eggs from their partner? That isn’t including any they’ll get from other people.

They always go over the top with spending insane amounts at Christmas too.

I think it’s a bit of a reflection of your own insecurities

Pernicketywishes · 05/04/2026 14:53

OP, I think all the usual posters must be busy…
Mumsnet never ceases to amaze me, you’ll all dive on people one minute… “Easter decorations, what is this fresh hell?” (Insert Halloween/Christmas Eve boxes and the Elves!)

And then someone posts about someone spending £60 on chocolate eggs for two people (and actually tells people…) and the OP is treated like she’s the odd one 😂😂😂

I always buy my DS21 and DH an Easter Egg but I’m not a fan of chocolate so haven’t had one myself for years. This year I thought I’d treat myself.

What the hell have cadburys done to their chocolate?

I had a small piece last night and have given the rest to the boys. To be honest the only time I do eat chocolate is to have the odd piece of Twirl I buy for my DH and they taste ok. My DS was a huge fan of Dairy Milk as a young teenager but no longer eats it. I thought he’d just grown out of the locust stage although to be honest he used to eat it so rapidly he probably didn’t taste it. It was more like rocket fuel for him rather than a luxurious treat. But he admits that he hates the taste of it.

Im not surprised that someone has a decent budget for a nice Easter egg after tasting Cadburys offerings.

Cadburies swapped from Chocolate to Chocolate flavoured palm oil some time ago. That's why they can sell them for virtually nothing.

Dh has bought me 3 bars of Rye chocolate. About £30 with postage.

It's 30 quid not a vital organ.
Unless they asked you to pay, it's not your business.

Me for a start off, a decent selection of small individual eggs, mini eggs. One of those Lindt bunnies, Kinder and the nut ones - I bloody love them all. Great fun and I am over 60.

I don't understand what is the problem, like everyone has said - a fun budget.

BCBird · 05/04/2026 14:48

I would not spend 30 pound on an egg, nor want anyone to.spend thst on me. There is no way I would spend that on eggs for a child either. I would not, however berate anyone who chose to do this.

Okay I accept IABU about this but I don’t know how to explain it.

I do love her dearly but she’s so over the top it just feels like everything has to be an event or an occasion and is very performative.

I asked her what she’s doing today and she said they’ve had mini egg pancakes for breakfast and are decorating Easter cookies later. I refuse to believe most normal adults without children are sat there decorating Easter themed cookies amongst piles of Easter eggs with their husband.

they live in the real world.

This sounds like a lovely Easter. I think you're jealous. Perhaps instead of spouting shit online you could go and have a nice day yourself?

AndrewPreview · 05/04/2026 14:44

Does it matter?

  1. They sound like they're having a rather nice day.
  2. Who pissed on your chips?

Op are you jealous of her? It’s really up to them how they spend their money I don’t see why you’re so bothered tbh. It’s Easter they enjoy it and spoil themselves so what.

properidiot · 05/04/2026 14:43

It's not really performative - it's just her and her DH spending a little cash on each other as a treat. You actually sound a bit jealous of her. Why can't adults have some fun and decorate cookies at Easter?

Stop being such a fun sponge OP - lighten up!

FavouriteBiggle · 05/04/2026 14:42

I made an Easter Egg hunt for my DH this morning.

I do love the fake snobs on mumsnet. Pretending they can’t possible drink a bottle of wine below £60 because even that would be “barely drinkable” when most likely you’re in a bog standard job and shop in Aldi.

The trope of everyone on mumsnet earning 6 figures and being oh so middle class has gone on too long, it’s not believable anymore. Especially when it’s shoehorned into an Easter egg thread. No one with actual money would post this comment. I certainly wouldn’t. It’s ridiculous.

Plenty of people earn 6 figures? It hardly uncommon these days. I find it harder to believe that anyone would be jealous of buying £30 of chocolate. Even if your into cheapo wine, you'll barely get a meal in a harvester for that amount

Different people post different things - who knew?

JJMama · 05/04/2026 14:40

It’s only insane if they can’t afford it, but the clearly can so why are you poking your nose? What other people spend their money on is none of your business!!

StationJack · 05/04/2026 14:40

Ilovelurchers · 05/04/2026 13:46

I mean, I agree the cookies thing is weird, but each to their own - it's not hurting anyone. If I suggested to my boyfriend that we decorate Easter cookies together he would think I had gone insane, but different strokes for different folks....

You say 'performative" - who do you feel they are performing this for? Do they stock it on social media?

Surely if they do, most people would just think, that's weird, grown adults doing an Easter activity aimed at kids. It's not like everyone will be seeing it and jealously envying them their sexy glamorous lifestyle....

I just don't know why it gets to you that much! And yeah, I wouldn't spend £60 on eggs myself, but it's not the worst extravagance ever. Pretty sure there are some lush looking ones in Hotel Chocolat that cost that much just for one, and some people must buy them.

My boyfriend is far from an extravagant spender, and he told me that last year the egg he got his mom was £30. It's just not that much to spend on an occasional treat. If you had said they spent £600, then I would hear you.....

But also, what's wrong with them decorating cookies? Why does it have to very weird? One of them could really e joy baking for example or just really enjoy fun, light hearted things. Not sure why it's labelled weird just because someone has decided this is normally an activity that kids do.

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 05/04/2026 14:29

YABU especially for the catty ‘they have no kids’ comment at the end.

Sounds a lovely day they are spending together. Would you like to be doing sorting like this? I can’t imagine posting a thread about my friends giving their partners eggs and enjoying a day together.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 05/04/2026 12:39

I got my 3 DC standard eggs-one each under £5 Anything more is excessive IMO. The chocolate used is normally shit

Surely the individual eating them will decide if they like the chocolate?

Smeegall · 05/04/2026 14:22

I have been on a diet since January and I said the budget for my egg was £30 as I was only going to have one. I've got a lindt one.

Unfortunately all I can think about is the calories so I'm not sure I'll eat it all! I had half an egg thinking that was 250 calories but then I realised the calories on the packet were per 100g not per the whole thing!!! Half the egg was 450 calories. Or there abouts!

Trusttheawesome · 05/04/2026 14:22

Dragonflytamer · 05/04/2026 14:14

But £30? That is a pretty low bar - it's like half a bottle of just about drinkable wine.

Don’t come round my house today OP, you would not be happy! Seriously though- how can you care what other people do in this way? They are enjoying their lives, working hard, having treats- it’s a good thing. The more happy people the better!
