To think it’s easter not christmas?

What is going on with easter these days?
My social media is full of photos of piles of easter eggs, toys & clothes!
Mine got one each (well a tub of haribo for one as he doesn’t like easter eggs.)
AIBU to think people go over the top in some weird bid to show off?

I can see the Easter outfit stemming from days when more people went to church.

I also think the odd gift at Easter is probably not that uncommon. We would sometimes get an Easter gift, often to share. My favourite being the Bambi VHS 😆

True, it’s not a crime, but some people do care about the effects of out of control capitalism on every day life. The pressures of Christmas on people’s budgets, not to mention their mental health with the pressure to provide for children and ‘keep up’ are already well documented. Then there’s the environment. Sure, a lot of people don’t care, but for those that do, it is just observing that Easter is in danger of going the same way.

I agree with this. And all the cries of the cost of living while shops put out all these things in shops and people tie themselves in knots financially and mentally.

And for anyone reading this who happily goes all out without it causing you any stress, then good for you. You crack on (no pun intended). But the toxicity can’t be ignored and still needs talking about.

begonefoulclutter · 05/04/2026 13:19

It's not the religious festival that's the issue here. It's the social media show-offs.

Haven't rtft but in case it hasn't already been mentioned yet... Easter is more important to Christians than Christmas.

Calliopespa · 05/04/2026 13:16

sashh · 05/04/2026 12:26

You do realise Easter is a more important festival than Christmas.

Interestingly, this is more obvious if you spend a lot of time in Europe, where you definitely sense (for me it was Italy and France) that Easter is more sacred.

Calliopespa · 05/04/2026 13:14

Life is relentlessly grim. If people want to celebrate and exchange gifts, any excuse, I say.

The pagan festival of Easter would see people decorate their homes with flowers and candles, exchange candles as gifts, paint eggs, make spiced hot cross buns and gather for dancing and feasts. Sounds like the basis for a mini Christmas to me.

That said, I don’t. We do have more than one egg each though. The gluttony!

Edited

I think the cross is to represent the cross Christ died on isn't it? I agree Spring was a pagan celebration but I think the Hot Cross Buns are firmly a Christian tradition aren't they?

I literally said the same upthread 😂
Apparently it's like a Christmas Eve box - but instead of Christmassy things like pyjamas and reindeer food or whatever the heck you put in them, a boo box has Halloween stuff.
So presumably skeleton heads, fake blood, jelly worms Confused 😁

Haha, wow. Okay 😂😂 I only read so far upthread, so missed your question 😆. My 14 year old son just started laughing at the concept of a boo box when I asked him if he'd heard of one, stating it's all for show Mum 😂😂 Not daft my boy 😁

Octagonchecker · 05/04/2026 12:44

I saw an Easter advent calendar the other day.

I saw a human sized Easter Bunny ornament in the Range, it was an Easter version of the massive Nutcracker statues that are around at Christmas. Stuff of nightmares!

What the hell is a boo box?!

My kids birthdays are in November and January, I like to make a fuss at Easter because they dont get any other big celebrations as such until Halloween then. Its nice for them and they absolutely love it. Both of mine said its somthing they'll do with their own children when they have them

And I'm ngl, I like that it pisses some people off 🤣🤣 can't imagine getting annoyed at other parents wanting to treat their own children,

I think a lot of these people complaining saying their kids ask for more things because they know other kids are getting more...... I just don't believe it. By the time the kids go back to school most forget what they even got for Easter, same as for Christmas

I think it's more the parents see the pictures and feel a certain way about it

My child was born in early January so when they were small I used to give then a "half birthday" in July, a little present and a trip out in the good weather as their actual birthday got a bit lost in the Christmas/New Year festivities

Just turned into another capitalist fest and ruined the tradition tbh! Same as boo boxes at Halloween - what on Earth is the need??

What the hell is a boo box?!

Lifeomars · 05/04/2026 12:58

Bloozie · 05/04/2026 11:34

No one is making you take part in any of that. Or commit to any kind of minimum spend. Shops putting their stuff out early means people that do want to - as per their free will - can spread the cost rather than feel the hit in one pay packet. Yes, it makes money for shops too. We live in a capitalist society. I’d rather not but we do, it ain’t going away and consumption powers it. People NOT spending money is when things go tits up. Again, I wouldn’t have organised the world this way but it wasn’t up to me.

And a year without all of that would just be work and war. Brilliant. I’ll take my bunch of daffs on Mother’s Day and carve my pumpkin as a grown adult, thanks.

My post was an observation and nowhere did I state that I felt compelled to take part in any of it nor did I say that people should live cheerless lives and ignore festive occasions.

Do people do what they like?

I think a lot of people just do what they think other people do and what they are pressured into doing by the retail industry.

Personally I don't think conditioning children into thinking " fun" equals being showered with gifts is doing them any favours or makes them grow into decent people with decent values.

This. Children do not benefit from ridiculous amounts of sugar, thinking love and fun is all about new things (that will outlive them in landfill).

if you love your kids then spend time with them and teach them how to find joy without endless planet destroying consumption .

Rainbowdottie · 05/04/2026 12:57

I’m very very old. I come (came) from a big family. I can remember Easter Sunday as all the family getting together for a roast. I remember as a child lining up my Easter eggs. I really loved receiving them. But other than it, it was just another family get together.

Traditionally my kids had the same. We’d go to MILs for dinner, my kids would get eggs and they’d have an Easter egg hunt in the garden. I’m doing that today for my adult kids and grandchildren.

but there’s no big show of Easter presents or decorations or bunny baskets. In fact our family has dwindled down so much, my grandkids receive very few Easter eggs now. To the point where I think aw I wished they had a few more. I still buy my adult kids an egg too. Nothing extravagant, I bought them on offer with my weekly shop from Tesco.

i do see social media flooded with presents and decorations and tbh I don’t really have any opinion. You do you as far as I’m concerned. I don’t really care what other people think of my Easter egg hunt or buying adults as well as kids, Easter eggs, so why I should care about what someone else is doing.

i do agree that Easter is a more important event that Christmas but i guess that depends on your religion, your understanding of both events and really what you brought up with but im not getting into that, religion is a whole different conversation.enjoy the day however you celebrate it, don’t worry about what others are doing

sashh · 05/04/2026 12:26

You do realise Easter is a more important festival than Christmas.

Yes, if you are Christian and go to Church.

The consumerist nonsense has nothing whatever to do with Jesus though, so it doesn’t follow that Easter should = more gifts.

Somedreamer · 05/04/2026 12:53

Octagonchecker · 05/04/2026 12:44

I saw an Easter advent calendar the other day.

For real?! 😂 Where was selling these? That is batshit!

FitAt50 · 05/04/2026 12:53

It's just another reason for common people to post pictures of how much money they have spent on their spoilt kids. It's as bad as the Facebook pics of stacks of birthday/Christmas presents etc.

Somedreamer · 05/04/2026 12:50

I’m 40 and when I was a child I got tonnes of chocolate aged about 0-8, all my extended family seemed to give me an egg! No joke in the early 90s I must’ve had about 10 eggs all from different people. The chocolate lasted for months.

Then as an older child / younger teen I got a couple of eggs (like 2-3) from close family and a couple of small easter-themed gifts like a small stuffed toy or easter themed pencil set. Then from age about 15 it was an egg from mum (and that continues to this day!)

SP2024 · 05/04/2026 12:50

Do people really do this? My kids have had an Easter egg hunt with the little hollow eggs from Aldi. One pack each and that’s all they have. An aunt sent them some Lindt mini eggs too (which I will likely eat). They are only 2 and 4 though, I suspect they will expect more eggs when they are older. But no toys or presents will happen. The only time they had presents was a little cuddly lamb when they were under 1 and not able to eat.

PersephonePomegranate · 05/04/2026 12:45

Userjal · 05/04/2026 10:34

I understand what you’re saying but I’m not, not going to decorate for Easter and buy gifts for my children because Bev next door works full time and can’t afford to do the same for her kids. I’ll likely never afford to take my kids to Disney land, doesn’t mean other families can’t take their children.
that’s your kids memories and that’s Lovely, hopefully my kids memories will be their mum was always ott and celebrated the little things.

Exactly. Lots of parents and lone parents work full time and still manage to dot a few mini eggs around the house and put a wreath up. As with everything, its about choosing what you do and what you spend money on.

It seems to be the adults that suffer from peer pressure here. Kids always want what other people have - always have, always will. Mine wanted TikTok at 6 years old because her best friend did and was heartily disappointed when I said no and refused to download it on my phone. Saying 'no' is part of parenting. We don't all get to do everything in life and all have to learn to manage expectations and live with disappointment, but expecting other people to downplay their lives so others don't feel bad is just toxic.

rainbowunicorn · 05/04/2026 12:45

Besidemyselfwithworry · 05/04/2026 08:02

Mine has got an egg trail with little eggs and a big egg at the end
then a small gift bag with some little bits in sweets, new socks etc colouring books, an Easter chick bath bomb.
my mum used to get a new summer dress for Easter and when we were little she did the same for me and my sister but sis and I don’t tend to do it now we buy clothes when they need them unless we go away at Easter and get something new to take.
i know someone who has bought new bikes!!’ But she said they needed them but even so it’s a lot isn’t it?

Seems sensible to buy them new bikes now at the beginning of spring so tbey get most use it of them over the months of better weather. No point buying kids a bike in November or December as chances are it will be months before they can use them.

Hallywally · 05/04/2026 12:43

I usually give DD £5 or let her buy something for that value as she gets lots of Easter Eggs & they end up hanging around for months.

MaidOfSteel · 05/04/2026 12:42

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/04/2026 07:56

There's nothing wrong with making things fun for kids or giving some gifts. I think you just do what you like. 🤷‍♀️

We used to be happy with an Easter egg back in the 70s. There was none of this performative, show-off parenting with piles of stuff.

Rookrook · 05/04/2026 12:42

Life is shit at the moment all doom and gloom. People can do what they like to make them and their family happy.
My children are in their 20’s and they always got new clothes and a toy and Easter egg from my DP’s. I got them new clothes and a small egg.
And yes I would have posted on SM if it was available.
People are free to unfriend or hide my posts as they see fit! On instagram etc you must be watching etc because that’s how the algorithm works!

As a religious Christian festival Easter has always existed for 2000 years .
It's the commercial aspect that has changed.

Sorry, my post makes zero sense and you have responded appropriately. I blame my meds - sorry : (
