AIBU to worry as my husband thinks zombies are coming?

DH can at times go a bit funny , though he normally snaps out of it.
This current episode has stuck around for longer than usual and as a family we are getting concerned.

It started off with him locking the doors as soon as the sun had set just incase, that then escalated into the garden gate have padlocks fitted and the doors locked at all times, DH had also set dug the ring camera and doorbell out of the cupboard to monitor activity.

Yesterday I had a hospital appointment, whilst i was having my procedure done he waited outside in the car park, there were two incidents that took place.
The first it was a warm day, he kept the kids in the car with the windows up “just in case”.

Then the youngest really needed the toilet so he put the 14 year old in the drivers seat , with the engine running and told her to “be prepared”

Is this normal, he appears to be his normal self but is scared of zombies coming

Not on their own with the engine running!

They’re then legally in charge of the car

Well, if you're Op's husband, those legal technicalities won't really matter if there is a zombie invasion.

Seriously though, if true your husband needs serious medical intervention. His behaviour will continue to escalate and he is delusional

Tillow4ever · 03/04/2026 09:48

OP people are skeptical because it’s well known on here in school holidays we get lots of fake posts from bored kids - your post certainly sounds like something a bored kid might write!

If you are a genuine poster, please seek help for your husband. Locking door etc is fine, perfectly reasonable behaviour in fact. But his reason for it isn’t. Also, why is he only worried about zombies at sunset? They aren’t vampires…..

This behaviour WILL impact your children. Do you want them to grow up in terror that zombies might attack them at any time? Or that aliens will abduct them randomly? Or whatever the latest conspiracy is? The best thing you can do for you and them is to leave or kick him out. Make it clear that he cannot see the kids until he has gotten the help he needs, and he is rational again.

He needs more help than you can give him. Call the drs or 111 today and ask for help. Good luck.

Ophir · 03/04/2026 09:48

@ByKookyPombear I think you can phone 111 for mental health issues, I’d do that, or your local crisis team

I’d also remove yourself and the children from the house, as he is now acting on paranoid delusions and placing them at risk

I don’t know but having played The Last of Us that tends to be the only way to stop them.

I think different brands of zombie have different weaknesses. Last of us they're infected by fungus aren't they? 28 days later have a rage virus and through the head seems to work

backagainohdear · 03/04/2026 09:46

To be fair I got stucked into the covid thing, I had 300 toilet rolls made a throne out of them.
Are you sure he’s not worried about ww3 rather than zombies?

southcoastsammy · 03/04/2026 09:46

I would be seriously worried OP, is he having a breakdown?? Actual Zombies?? Not a housebreak in but zombies? He needs professional help.

Why don’t you just go down to the Winchester and wait for it all to blow over

😂😂😂

A child can sit in the drivers seat as long as the engine is off and the handbrake is on. Why do you think it’s not legal for a child to sit in the drivers seat at all? I’m sure many parents have occupied their toddlers by letting them pretend to “drive” the car whilst you sit and wait somewhere….

SupervisorySpecialAgent · 03/04/2026 09:44

If this were my family member, I would be extremely concerned about psychosis at this point. Try to find the number for your local Early Intervention for Psychosis team and have a talk with them. Please don’t leave your children alone with him while he is like this. Has he shown any signs of thinking you or the children are zombies?

ilikeeggs · 03/04/2026 09:44

You need to get him a GP appointment asap.

Ophir · 03/04/2026 09:44

Greyblankie · 03/04/2026 09:33

I could understand this if it wasn’t such a ridiculous topic. Starting to believe a partners paranoia about WW3 - understandable

Zombies? Nah

It’s a well known phenomenon in psychiatry, used to be called folie à deux

Tryagain26 · 03/04/2026 09:44

He sounds psychotic, no it's not normal

TittyGajillions · 03/04/2026 09:44

Greyblankie · 03/04/2026 09:20

zombies don’t have brains - the only way to destroy them is by shooting them through their open zombie mouth - or setting them on fire.

Of course zombies have brains, the only way to kill them is to destroy the brain. BTW, you've got red on you.

Yeah he is not well, is he not freaking the children out?!

They are use to him now and just say he is silly

He actually committed a criminal offence yesterday. It is not legal to allow a child to sit in the driver's seat and especially not with the engine running! If someone had noticed they could have rung the police. I think you should contact the crisis team for your area to get him some help.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 03/04/2026 09:41

Oh OP I'm sorry you're feeling like people are laughing at you. You need to speak to someone medically qualified urgently. Either your GP if they're open today or A&E if not.

You and your kids could be in serious danger if your poor DHs mental health deteriorates further (which can happen quickly). Please don't take that chance. Even if he never gets worse, what he did to your 14 year old yesterday and his delusions being seen as in any way "normal" is deeply traumatising for your children.

edwinbear · 03/04/2026 09:41

Clearly this isn’t normal OP, but I think you know this already. My aunt had delusions like this, but it was witches in her case, she was schizophrenic. Your DH needs urgent medical help.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/04/2026 09:40

I would guess (if not a wind up) that the whole thing has built up so gradually that OP has been caught in a variety of the 'boiling frog' situation - what starts as minor anxieties can escalate slowly to a level where you sit and think 'hang on, that's not right, surely?'

He needs help, OP. His paranoia is going to keep escalating until your life becomes untenable. Does he have friends? Work? Have family? Because I don't think it will be possible to talk him out of this mindset, he needs medication and he probably won't go to the doctor on your say so, but he might listen if enough people tell him to see his GP.

Megifer · 03/04/2026 09:39

You both need professional help. Him for believing this and you for even having to ask if this is normal.

Villanellesproudmum · 03/04/2026 09:39

Yeah he is not well, is he not freaking the children out?!

BMW6 · 03/04/2026 09:39

I think you should get him sectioned ASAP he's very unwell mentally.

This is not just Conspiracy Theory - he's acting on it and involving your children. He could put them in danger through his delusions.

Please don't just sit on this and wait for him to snap out of it.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 03/04/2026 09:38

He needs serious help. As others have said, contact his GP as a matter of urgency.
In the meantime do not leave your children with him. He’s not a safe adult and shouldn’t be in a position of responsibility and caring for children.

TrashHeap · 03/04/2026 09:36

No this isn't normal, he needed a doctor long before this by the sounds of it, so please don't wait until after easter, call 111 and tell them what's going on.
