AIBU - mini eggs and mum

Housemovehopeful2024 · 31/03/2026 21:30

My daughter is almost 7. I am not a fan of her having mini eggs due to the risk of choking (not precious about other chocolate or sweets - it’s just the risk of choking I’m worried about). I have told my mum this but despite that and reminding her, she seems to repeatedly give them to her. One week it’ll be a chocolate yogurt with mini eggs, the next week mini egg cakes (only one egg per cake so perhaps less of an issue?) or a small egg with mini eggs in. This week, they made Easter cakes with the smarties equivalent of mini eggs (still the same size and shape). AIBU to be irked by this or am I being too precious?

YANBU - mini eggs are a hazard and in any event she should listen to your wishes

You’re not being unreasonable as you’ve asked your mom not to give her them.
But, she’s 7, not a toddler so should be able to eat mini eggs.
Does she eat sausages? They’re a proper choking hazard along with the obvious grapes due the their shape and size. But again, at 7 this shouldn’t be an issue.

I'm cringing for you. Seriously.

Why?🧐

I don’t think mini eggs are actually dangerous for 7 yos (although I am no expert as my two are now older and your forget).

However, I think your Mum should respect your wishes.

There are so many types of chocolate out there, it seems
really strange she’s picking on the one thing you’ve asked her not to buy.

It’s a power play, and a crap one at that.

If she’d had any subtlety she’d have followed the instruction but bought something else of a
similar size and shape, like malteasers.

Is that right. I probably won't sleep tonight now. Off you jog - smug face

7year old at grans, I think just they should just eat what gran gives feed them. I wouldn’t gove my mum rules for feeding after baby years.

When DD was teething my mum suggested rubbing a bit of brandy on her gums.

Out HV has advised grapes cut until 8 as they had a recent death in that age. I would srill split mini eggs

I didnt know HV worked with 8 year olds?

What if there is a choking incident of a 12 year old, will grapes be cut for 12 year olds?

pinkpony88 · 31/03/2026 23:06

My stepdaughter is a paramedic and has made me sufficiently scared of mini eggs that I don’t even eat them if I’m on my own in the house - and I’m nearly 50! 🤣

Blueshoey484 · 31/03/2026 23:05

Does your mum do childcare? Is that when she's giving the eggs? If that's the case go and pay someone else the going rate who won't give your daughter mini eggs. Problem solved

Don't use your family for childcare and then moan. Pay someone else

Agreed!

But only on ice cream not just warm and alone!

Totally hear you on this one. I still hate mini eggs for that reason and fact is, they are the lethal shape and size. Round lollipops, hate them… grapes, thankfully my kids don’t like them, hot dogs, too processed for my liking. Choking hazard is real, anyone can call me crazy if they want.

On icecream- actually delicious!!!

Agreed, like a mini egg version of a hot fudge sundae, 😋

Thanks for this and the other PP. I’ve not thought about it in this way before and perhaps do use a little too much cotton wool.

OP reading your replies, you seem like a really nice person.

tachetastic · 31/03/2026 22:58

Mini-eggs ARE fine for a 7 year old without additional needs, but what is NOT fine is for the OP’s mum to repeatedly ignore her specific request not to give them to her DD.

I agree that OPs DM should do as she’s asked, however chocolate has no place in a microwave and should be served from the fridge!

Warm chocolate … no!

I don’t want to cause alarm but Marks & Spencer mini eggs (which are far superior) are quite a bit larger than Cadbury’s mini eggs.

Edited

Lidl's Mister mini eggs are also good. Cadbury's have never been the same since they got rid of the brown ones, and continued cheapening the chocolate.

The stuff about choking always boggles my mind : lollipops, grapes, mini eggs.... Kids can eat anything as long as you weaned them on real food, not slop, and don't hover or interfere with their confidence or concentration.

And families can and should also kiss and cuddle babies!!

I don’t think how you weaned your child has anything to do with how they might choke on something at the age of 7.

Mini eggs, whole grapes, hotdogs and marshmallows in particular are easily able to get lodged in the throat and due to the size and shape are extremely difficult to dislodge once there.

Letsgocamping67 · 31/03/2026 22:52

The people being all blasé about choking risks obviously haven’t watched both their DC nearly choke to death on seemingly safe foods as I have. Mini eggs are definitely a choking risk but I agree children do need to learn to bite food in half. Also a lot of people don’t realise that popcorn like marshmallows is a significant risk especially to under 5s.

Gowlett · 31/03/2026 22:50

The M&S Speckled Eggs are quite big, size of a grape. I bite them in half (sometimes the other half gets stuck in my mouth…)
