Why do people try to sell such complete tat on Vinted?!

By “tat,” I mean the selection of clothing on Vinted: tops and trousers so worn they’ve got more bobbles than fabric, stains and holes that absolutely did not come from “one tiny snag.”

I’ve literally binned better stuff without a second thought, so I’m honestly fascinated by the confidence of someone listing their ancient M&S top... complete with washing‑machine ventilation holes for a fiver!!

What exactly possesses people to upload clothing that is only suitable for the bin?

Here's a prime example..

You're kidding me! 😧
What do they want, or are they paying people to take them away?

I've ordered two things from shein and they looked great and have lasted very well. I get lots of compliments on one of them
I don't want to support shein though would be happy to buy second hand.

I confess I have a couple of things from them that are excellent - sheer black shirts ( like chiffon) that put over dresses in an evening on hols - at £10 each they are some of my best buys - I also recently bought a pack of 3 heavily lace trimmed hi rise knickers/ shorts style - nice quality, have washed well and are no different to what I would buy at M&S - £6.75 for the pack

Really...I've been thinking of ideas for a side hustle 🤔

I am a flight attendant and lots of my colleagues sell their worn tights and shoes for good money, theres a big market for them 😳

Fingalscave · 31/03/2026 13:52

I don't object to people trying to sell tatty things on Vinted, but I find it very annoying when they describe stuff as new without tags when it's obviously well used. I was looking at handbags and there were tears in the lining, stains, scratches and dirt. Most said something like Only used a few times. In that case, it's not new!

there is very specific group of men who spend a lot of money on shoes like that 👀 😂😂

Funniest ones are overpriced items described as “very good”, with a big stain somewhere where the seller says “I’m sure it’ll come out in the wash” 🤣 as if I have some kind of magic washing machine that’s somehow different from theirs that clearly did not get the stain out!

Also, selling items for £1. I couldn’t be arsed walking to the post office for a pound!

That’s my bugbear too re stains. ‘Will come out in wash.’ Bloody wash it then if you’re so sure!

It’s this that drives me mad. Fine, try to sell anything you want on vinted. But at least describe it honestly. Don’t list it as ‘very good’ if it’s got gigantic great holes in the sleeves.

Not clothes, but was browsing Disney Princess things for a gift. One of the listings was an Elsa figurine. The description was “excellent” but her head had been broken off completely!

How on earth do they get away with that.

Wow. Is that right? I didn’t realise that.

Well that’s me no longer donating then (at least until they can give a detailed spec of what is acceptable). I will spread the word, as don’t want to offend them.

I wouldn’t donate shitty clothes but the fact the charity sees fit to distribute clothes (that they presumably think are okay) and people who apparently have nothing are complaining?

So being poor means you should be happy with dirty and holey clothes? Do you think they should eat rotten food as well?

Ablondiebutagoody · 31/03/2026 13:12

I hear you. I was hoping to buy some jeans, thought that well-used could be beneficial there. But Christ it was a load of old crap on offer, combined with particularly vague sizing information. Never thought I'd say it but worse than Facebook Marketplace.

MaturingCheeseball · 31/03/2026 13:01

I’m not sure about “poverty” being the reason. Some people are listing masses of crap which they bought in the first place and also there’s no excuse for lying about condition.

I bought an M&S jumper new without tags. I just threw it in the bin. It was felty and had more bobbles than wool. And a BNWT dress that smelled awful - it was doused in Febreze but with an underlying BO smell; I guess they had worn it but with the tag tucked in.

I did read something a while back about how shocked African people were at the state of some of the second hand clothes being sent there. Not even the poorest people in the world want used Primark crap.

People can ‘upgrade’ items and resell for a profit 🤷🏼‍♀️ I do it all the time with timberland boots & trainers. Folk can’t be bothered cleaning them & put them on cheap I snap them up, clean then resell making a tidy profit!!!

Whatnameisif · 31/03/2026 11:01

One man's tat is another man's treasure?

I bought a badly ripped saree from Vinted the other day because I wanted to use it to make sarees for dolls. I'm glad they didn't bin it!

I've done similar with a ripped bedsheet which became hankies, doll's clothes and petticoats.

There must be other people targeting damaged items for cheap crafting fabric?

MidnightMeltdown · 31/03/2026 11:00

I guess that people have different standards and some people are desperate for money. It baffles me that people will bother to sell stuff for £1 or £2, given the time it takes to list, pack and post. Barely enough to buy a bottle of milk these days! However, I assume that they are struggling for money.

Portakalkedi · 31/03/2026 10:55

The whole thing is sad, particularly that so many are buying this plastic tat in the first place, and then thinking that someone might want it after they've worn it. FFS, there should be restrictions on the production of all this crap in the first place.

SkankingWombat · 31/03/2026 10:55

LegencyMonsters · 30/03/2026 16:37

I agree! even at a £1 its not worth the fees & postage.. you might as well buy new!

The £1 items I tend to buy are add-ons to the original item I was going there to buy. It oftens gets you a bundle discount to buy a few items and the postage difference is negligible if there is any increase at all. I list items for £1 with the thought others may do the same or for bundles of basics (like uniform) that will do someone a good turn even after the p&p is added on. Most £1 do sell as part of a bundle, but I do get the odd buyer who will just buy one £1 item. The drop off point is close to where I live and my work means I am often passing other convenience stores, so it's no real expenditure of time or effort to send them off on the rare occasion the sale is only bringing in £1.

The thing is though, what one person sees as trash is someone else's treasure. I have a wardrobe filled with luxury natural fabrics, many designer made, mostly sourced on Vinted and eBay.

It's not unusual for these to be listed in crap condition - stains, rips, missing zips, even old or active moth infestations. I buy items for a few pounds and repair, alter and restore them to continue their lives. It's unusual for there to not be a cashmere sweater or a silk blouse in my freezer to kill off any potential moth eggs/larvae.

I also recently restored a pair of absolutely trashed Gucci suede loafers that looked like they were at the end of their life. They're now "beautifully lived in" but have years of life left.

I've also been known to purchase a £1 used primark shirt or a pair of wash faded Shein denim dungarees with a missing button and use them to make my son's Halloween costume (zombie scarecrow anyone?)

I wish I had your skills to do this

Katemax82 · 31/03/2026 10:48

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 31/03/2026 10:37

Because if you are over a certain size, charity shops are crap. And the clothes stink.

My son is 19st and got a cardigan that fit him from a charity shop

Katemax82 · 31/03/2026 10:46

I paid about 6 quid for a co ord set from new look that arrived with loads of pet and human hair on it. Once I washed it I decided it was only fit for the bin
