Six year old trans girl ‘tries to cut off her penis’ after Guide ban

Quite a disturbing article in this morning’s Observer regarding the impact of the Guides’ ban on trans girls following the Supreme Court ruling.

It reports on the experience of one six year old trans girl named Emily after hearing she could no longer attend Rainbows:

Emily’s parents decided to be honest with their daughter about the situation, and explained that she was no longer able to take part in Rainbows because she was trans. A few hours later Curt said they found her “sobbing in her room” and were “shocked” to find her holding a pair of plastic scissors to her penis.

AIBU to find this a distressing consequence of campaign by anti-trans activists or is it a natural result of allowing such young children to change their gender identity?

Zoe Williams has argued that a sensible solution to all of this would be to make the Brownies mixed gender like the Scouts.

Wouldn't this be more sensible than making six year old girls so distressed that they attempt to cut off their penis?

A number of years ago both girl guiding and scouts asked their membership to vote on whether they should remain single sex. Scouting, I assume due to falling numbers, voted to open membership up to all, whilst girl guiding chose to remain single sex. Are you suggesting girl guiding should ignore the overwhelming majority of its members to pander to a small number of parents that can’t say no to their male child, especially when there is another organisation (scouts) that they can join instead?

Wouldn’t the sensible solution be to send this child to a mixed sex group that already exists ie the scouts?

The article is clear that this girl’s friends are all now boycotting Rainbows due to how she has been treated.

This boys friends may well be, probably as their parents have all lied to them as well that he's a girl. They can all go join the Scouts together and let the rest of the girls at Rainbows enjoy their single sex provision safe in the knowledge that now that is exactly what it is.

BruisedNeckMeat · 29/03/2026 11:51

It’s interesting how often these parents arrive just in the nick of time to find their child attempting to remove their penis with scissors.

I’m not sure, my daughter is at rainbows and has various friends. If she found out one of her friends was banned from rainbows she would be very confused and upset. She would have no idea what being trans meant, nor do I think she would care.

We haven’t come across this situation yet in the real world. Closest we have come to is about gay relationships. So I think it’s hard to say if you haven’t lived the situation

It’s not that complicated, surely. Your friend is a boy. Rainbows is for girls only.

Why make Guides mixed sex? Why can’t girls, for once, have something of their own that they don’t have to share with boys. It’s really not too much to ask.

Girls should be banned from scouts. When I was a kid boys went to scouts and girls went to guides.

What an awful group of parents. Cult-like.
Anyway what girl? That's a boy.

I guess I do. I have told them a complete strange man breaks into their house and leaves presents at Christmas.

Everyone lies to children. We don’t always tell them the truth. We will tell them a version of the truth. Every parent varies on how much they lie to their kids. Some parents refuse to do Santa. Some won’t talk about how babies are made and make up something else.

I don’t think this argue stands

I don’t think fibbing to create magic surrounding Father Christmas leaving presents in their house for about 8 years is remotely comparable to telling children or adults alike that they can change sex for life. For a start one doesn’t impact others whilst the other one does.

Clefable · 29/03/2026 11:49

This is definitely not the ‘gotcha’ the parents probably imagine it is. What the fuck have they done to a child that age for this to happen? This child needs help.

Why the heck are this child's parents allowing such harrowing, personal details become common knowledge?

Poor child.

TulipsandNC · 29/03/2026 11:49

If it hadn't been GG that pushed him over the edge it would have been something else. Probably something minor to every one else at school. poor kid.

Thelnebriati · 29/03/2026 11:49

Its only difficult to explain the situation to them if you've previously lied about it.

Thelnebriati · 29/03/2026 11:48

I must have been 7 or 8 years old when I was sent to see a child psychologist, because when I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said 'David Attenborough'.
I can still remember the look on his face when he realised that I did not want to be David Attenborough. I wanted to do his job but I didn't know what it was called.

Poor child has parents with Munchausen’s by-proxy. Unfortunately, this is becoming more common; batshit people have kids and they become an extension of their batshit views and solipsistic approach to life.

Utterly sick of this shit.

A sensible solution would have been for the parents to send their kids to Scouts in the first place.

Girls provision is for girls. Full stop.

Yep

Theres another thread running at the moment about parental authority, nothing as indepth as pretending you're the opposite sex but theres an example on there of the over explaining and over burdening of information to young people. But apparently in that example on the other thread the 4 year old 'gets it'

I suspect that parents who waffle on and go into great explanations about things think that their child 'gets it' and oh they're so insightful and they understand lots of things.

But what you create when you put a load of information dumped on a very young child like 3, 4, 5 and so on, is that although on the surface you think they 'get it' but you're over burdening them with processing and digesting of things that are too multi layered and grown up in some ways. This is why childhood anxiety is through the roof.

I would wager this has happened to this child in his life before, leading to this nonsense that he thinks hes a girl 'you know she's really clear about her identity and what she feels'.

And now the information that he cannot attend a particular club anymore was couched in similar terms 'because we're completely honest with her'

Well dont be, you're a grown up and children need to be given information in an age appropriate manner. The club is closed for you now so lets join another one.

Excellent post.

Six year old girls don't have penises to attempt to cut off. HTH.

Came on to say the same. A girl cannot cut off her penis. She doesn't have one. I am pretty sure a 6 year old (who hasn't been brainwashed anyway) could understand that.

Clowningaroun · 29/03/2026 11:46

JonesTown · 29/03/2026 11:36

The girl clearly wants to identify as female, and I think it’s only right that we respect her wishes in how we refer to her.

But it is a boy. If I pretend to be a caterpillar it doesn’t actually make me a caterpillar nor should the rest of the world refer to me as a caterpillar.
He, a boy, should never have been in rainbows and his parents should never have made him aware of trans nonsense

AliceNotInChains · 29/03/2026 11:46

If the parents hadn’t gone along with the bullshit in the first place maybe the little lad wouldn’t have developed such mental health problems.

“her penis” just sums up the whole argument.

No. Why can't girls just have something for themselves? Why should the girls budge over and let the boys in?

And a six year old BOY wanting to cut his penis off needs mental health intervention. His issues aren't solved by the adults colluding in the lie that he's a girl. Letting him go to Rainbows is not the solution.

Oh well, they tend to be oversubscribed. Other children will take their places.

All those parents who didn't send their daughters to Brownies and Guides because they didnt want them sharing sleeping spaces with males (something which even mixed sex orgs like Scouts weren't stupid enough to institute) will now be able to add their DDs to the waiting list.

But "she" is a male how did a transchild know about this why are the parents not protecting their little 6 year old why are the parents insisting on brownies which as far as I am aware girls don't start until 8 years old not 6. If parents recognise their child as trans surely they should try and make their lives easy maybe send them to scouts and not and try and make a point about girl guiding.
