Six year old trans girl ‘tries to cut off her penis’ after Guide ban

Quite a disturbing article in this morning’s Observer regarding the impact of the Guides’ ban on trans girls following the Supreme Court ruling.

It reports on the experience of one six year old trans girl named Emily after hearing she could no longer attend Rainbows:

Emily’s parents decided to be honest with their daughter about the situation, and explained that she was no longer able to take part in Rainbows because she was trans. A few hours later Curt said they found her “sobbing in her room” and were “shocked” to find her holding a pair of plastic scissors to her penis.

AIBU to find this a distressing consequence of campaign by anti-trans activists or is it a natural result of allowing such young children to change their gender identity?

There's a trans girl in our primary school. When the GG ruling was announced all the girls in that class made posters and banners in support. Lots threatened to leave GG to support their friend. Huge support from the families of the children too.

However... I am aware that many of the parents were secretly supportive of the change. Everyone was just too scared to be seen as transphobic especially as the mum of the child was exceptionally aggressive with their views. None of the other children did leave and everything went back to normal.

Should we move towards a situation like the Greens and Zack Polanski are advocating where trans women are legally recognised as women, and have access to all ‘female’ spaces?

Alternatively, all spaces could simply be made mixed gender.

This would blunt the impact of transphobia.

Absolutely not. There are lots of very good reasons why biological females need and benefit from single sex spaces.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 29/03/2026 17:54

What I find really hard about this is: there was already a scouting movement available that’s mixed sex. Because at the age of 6, camping isn’t a big part of the movement, a trans child is much easier to accommodate without it being much of an issue that this is a male child using a female name and wanting to be treated like they are female.

But the parents rejected this and went for the only female only option. They did that after the Supreme Court’s judgement, at a point Girl Guiding had said they were reviewing.

These cruel parents set their child up to be disappointed and hurt.

If there was not a mixed sex option, I can see this might be a problem but when there is a mixed sex option, just trying to destroy the single sex option feels hateful.

And I’m afraid the Green Party’s stance just makes them look like they hate women. If people who are male can’t access female only spaces the solution isn’t to improve male only spaces or to create new additional mixed sex spaces, it’s to scrap female only spaces and force people who are female to always accommodate people who are male.

I do think solutions need to be found for trans people that isn’t just “they need to stop being trans”- but forcing women to share their spaces is not the solution. Fix male spaces first.

This does seem like culture wars pressure has been put on the organisation rather than any actual threat to girls that has come about.

Well no. It's about abiding by the law.

If Guides want to become unisex, they absolutely can do that. What they can't do is advertise themselves as single sex, but let boys in through the back door on the grounds of 'gender identity'

"6 year olds don't need female only spaces. Absolutely appalling and unnecessary that this young child was excluded. It is going too far. Maybe if we got rid of these rigid gender boxes children wouldn't feel they need to be another gender to fit in the box."

I totally agree with getting rid of gender boxes but until we reach that place 6 year olds DO need female only spaces. Each year Girl Guiding conducts an attitude survey:
https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/globalassets/docs-and-resources/blogs-and-case-studies/gas/girlguiding-girls-attitudes-survey-2025.pdf

Some of the findings should make it clear why a single-sex environment where girls can be themselves is important:

"Girls are regularly exposed to sexist and misogynistic behaviours at school. It starts as early as 7 years old and worsens as they get older."

"They are subjected to comments that make them feel uncomfortable and scared. Girls have to navigate their environment, and be careful about appearing too smart or too self-confident. And this can negatively impact their mental health."

Because I'm a pedant I will.say that it was Flavor Aid that was used to murder the people of Jonestown in 1978, incorrectly described as Kool-Aid in news reports.

The original Kool-Aid reference is to The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, a 1968 non-fiction book by Tom Wolfe describing the antics of a bunch of hippies who travelled round America on a bus, dropping acid. The phrase was used to "describe an unsuccessful attempt to stop someone with a poor mental health record from drinking Kool-Aid laced with LSD, who then subsequently had a bad psychedelic experience. The Atlantic hypothesized that this story, which caused "many Americans [to become] familiar with the idea of being urged to drink Kool-Aid containing. . .unusual chemicals", contributed to the misconception that Kool-Aid was used in Jonestown."

I thank you for your attention to detail. However it always seems a little wasted on fact defying threads like this one.

My definition would be abuse, disrespect or hatred directed at a trans person because of their gender identity.

That would include failure to uphold or recognise their chosen gender and pronouns.

Law means trans people are their sex regardless of their chosen gender so not wanting a child with a penis in a specific organisation with children without a Penis can't be transphobic imo.

Bollixtothat · 29/03/2026 17:53

The parents caused the child’s distress by filling their head with nonsense. The child may have mental health problems but pretending to be a girl won’t fix those. The child needs counselling and the parents need guidance.

Stillreadingalot · 29/03/2026 17:48

BoredZelda · 29/03/2026 11:45

No. Girls need space to just be girls. Plenty of studies have shown this is beneficial in many ways. If you want a mixed space for your child, you can choose the Scouts.

I’m meh about trans girls in Guides. From what I’ve read the tiny number of troops that actually have trans girls have full support from the other girls in the group. This does seem like culture wars pressure has been put on the organisation rather than any actual threat to girls that has come about. There have been no studies that show the girl only spaces are negatively impacted by trans girls. That said, I can understand with the ongoing narrative about how “dangerous” trans girls are, I can understand why parents who have no first hand experience are concerned about it.

This story is probably untrue, or massively exaggerated. Having never had a trans child, I have no idea whether a six year old would understand their trans feelings without parental input, or how I would deal with it. I suspect counselling would be my first port of call, but has anyone ever tried accessing mental health services for children? Even privately it can be difficult to come by.

My problem with this is having a blanket policy for every situation ends up impacting some kids. I much prefer local troops being able to make their own decisions. My friend had two severely disabled children, a boy and a girl, very close in age. They live quite rurally and there was no option for scouts in their area so they approached the local brownie pack to see if both of them could join. They allowed it and the young lad was able to meet other kids and join in with his sister, he absolutely devoured the badges. It gave him a focus and some socialisation that is really difficult to find for disabled kids. When he sadly died, the brownies all came to his funeral and sang taps at the end. It was so moving. If, individually a local pack is happy to welcome a trans girl, and nobody has an issue with it, why should they be forced to refuse?

But noone was trying to pretend that the boy was a girl.

Sirzy · 29/03/2026 17:45

I don’t think most people are anti trans. They are anti erosion of women’s rights.

Please define gender.

Please define gender identity.

Please define a trans person.

Please don't say that a trans person is someone whose gender identity doesn't align with their sex, unless you can successfully define gender identity without saying it's an inner feeling.

The reason I ask this is because we know that some men pretend to be trans so they can abuse women. And when we say this is what some trans people do, we are told by other trans people that they are not "true trans" (see also the "No True Scotsman" fallacy which is an appeal to purity https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_true_Scotsman). So please let us know how we can tell the true trans from men pretending. Or just other men, really.

Weird though right, every progressive I know isn’t worried about trans people. They don’t paint them as these evil cross dressers trying to “invade female spaces”.

on the other hand, every roundabout painting, hotel shouting, flag waving nutjob is anti trans.

you might not be one of those, but there is definitely a correlation between conservatism and transphobia.

Oh my. The bomb and death threats and banging on the windows and doors of venues while survivors try to speak doesn't come from the pro women side. They aren't punching women in the face. Or covering their faces with balaclavas and attacking women. Or shouting at participants attending a feminist conference.

You don't find the pro women side holding up these kind of signs.

I could go on....

I in fact, did not say that.

You are though, by implication

If 'gender' should supersede sex, then you have men identifying as 'lesbians' and seeking relationships with women. If actual lesbians don't want to include men in their dating pool (because they are exclusively same sex attracted) then you would presumably call that bigotry.

My correlation is being a rape and SA survivor and being entitled under EA2010 to single sex spaces. And protecting those. And expecting them to be upheld.

But they can change which gender they identify as.

They can identify as whatever gender they like. Gender is a construct not a material reality, so how they see themselves in relation to that is their own business. However - as is the case for every single person on this planet - their sex is immutable, and they don't get to compel others to share their beliefs or to access facilities that have been set aside for people of the opposite sex.

The policy put boys in girls dorms, communal showers and tents, which is bad enough but it also put men in those places and worst of all parents weren't told that men were being allowed to take up roles that were supposed to be female only.
Girl guides are a single sex charity whose sole purpose is to operate as a group run for girls and young women without any males regardless of how they identify.
Girl guides had the option to change their charitable charter or abide by their current charter.
No boys should be in Girl guides regardless of how they identify or how nice they may be, its a girls only group.
As for studies about the harm of allowing boys into girls spaces there's hundreds just look at them and you will see why transgirls ie boys must be kept out of girls single sex groups and spaces

Sirzy · 29/03/2026 17:39

Saying that transgender ideology shouldn’t be forced on a 6 year old isn’t being transphobic, it is understanding that a 6 year old is unable to understand such things.

If an adult wishes to live their lives as the opposite gender then that is their choice as an adult. As long as they respect that some woman will understandably need biologically female only spaces then good luck to them.

My issue two issues come from children being exposed to this to the level they start believing something is wrong with them and the fact that certain groups are using this to erode the rights of biological females.

Racist = bigot
Homophobic = bigot
Transphobic = bigot

Comparisons need to be made so people can understand the hate that they spew at groups of very vulnerable people.
