AIBU to be baffled by colleague on same wage living lavishly?

AIBU to think that some people are so unaffected by the COL and to find it strange. A woman at work is just living a life that seems so alien to me and the others. She is just back from a weekend in London (not for any reason), went to a show, had dinners, shopping spree etc. last year bought a new house and a new car!! Is doing a Disney Paris and Paris holiday this summer! Is going on another trip to Budapest with her sister, spa weekend with her mum and sister, a few days to Rome with her DS because “he loves history and would love to see the colleseum and is thinking of where to go with her dd because she has to make it fair. I asked her if she had plans this weekend and they were out for dinner Friday night and Saturday night for two different celebrations. I’m constantly thinking WTF! The crazy thing is we earn the same which is approximately 50k, I mentioned a credit card last year and she said “oh no I don’t do credit cards, never had one, I hate them, I’m so fearful of debt, mortgage is my only debt and I overpay on that!” I’m baffled!

I don’t think are being unreasonable but I do think you are being a bit thick. I have a much better lifestyle than lots of colleagues - why - my age bought house years before them, have second home rent out, husband and I have a business on top of my job which he now runs.

ForPlumReader · 03/04/2026 10:26

She just spends differently from you. I have colleagues who are constantly moaning about money (we earn less than you but still a decent enough amount) but are always spending on unnecessary items - expensive clothes, expensive cars, large houses, gadgets, etc etc.

BiddyPopthe2nd · 02/04/2026 14:34

Or be lying about some of her spending

BiddyPopthe2nd · 02/04/2026 14:34

She may have inherited money or have savings or a side job….be lying about credit cards/debt…spend very little on pension or “sensible” items….have aDH who earns a lot or family money backing her….won the lottery….had a big legal payout for some reason….

There are all sorts of reasons why someone has a particular lifestyle that doesn’t match their day job.

Why is she lying?
I have no debt... if you're not constantly chasing your tail on CC payments she may well have plenty of spare cash.#

Quite. Can't believe @Sartre saying obviously about a person she doesn't even know.
As others have said, even close family and friends don't always tell about their good fortune as that in itself brings judgement or requests for money.

DH and I don't have credit cards, cars bought outright after saving first.

Why is it so difficult for some to comprehend that not everyone has debt.

Rubbish

Many do not make anything off only fans. Some make £100,000s off it. One of the first OF stars now owns a huge property portfolio and will never have to work again. And she's not even 27 yet! Was on that programme a few months ago - I'll look up her names.

LoopyLoo1991 · 01/04/2026 12:55

Blueshoey484 · 31/03/2026 21:33

How strange

She is/was one of the hottest women I've ever known personally - talking 9.5/10 looks and a good personality on top. Think 20% of the ladies at that office were in lust with her. Men would practically kiss the carpet she walked on but she never really played them on it.
An extraordinary lady all-round.

Exactly, and I'm the same

She’s lying about the debt obvs. People rack up tens of thousands of pounds in loans, credit cards, buy now pay later etc to fund this sort of lifestyle. You can also pay for holidays in instalments.

Different spending habits , uses Itison / Groupon , no childcare costs ?
Smaller mortgage , could have inherited items to furnish her home with or got them on Freecycle , could have an inheritance from a relative, her family might gift her small amounts of cash ??
Holidays can be done on a budget too if you have time and energy to search .
She might get hair done as a model for a trainee , shop for clothing on Vinted or always buys on sale

Rubbish

It was a joke. 🙄

Just like several other suggestions such as 'she doesn't eat much'.

Although poster should just ask her her secret rather than everyone guessing on here.

Erentalls · 01/04/2026 08:26

I earn less than that but DH earns many times more, and we also have some high risk investments that we saved for and which have done extremely well. No debt, inheritances or extended family money.

But you don't know she IS living above her means. If anything, the only information we have is that she specifically stated she hates ANY type of debt to the extent she doesn't even have a credit card!

This thread is utterly bizarre, people are desperate to believe a complete stranger is either lying, bragging, selling drugs or photos of her feet online or vastly in debt, based on absolutely no supporting evidence, rather than the more credible explanations that she is either just good at managing her money or has a (likely more prosaic, such as a better earning partner or inheritance) alternative sources of income!

Edited

And it's not like she'd necessarily need a much higher earning partner to be able to afford the lifestyle listed. If they happened to get on the ladder at a good time and have no childcare, that could potentially be a lot of mini breaks even if he were on an average or lower income.

Augustus40 · 01/04/2026 07:48

Some people don't eat much so that helps.

I'm a single mum on minimum wage. Colleagues with 2 income households have repeatedly told me how unfair it is that I have disposable income left at the end of the month and they don't. They are all well aware that I lost my father at 21 and inheriting his house and not having rent/mortgage is the main reason for this. The second being unlike them I do not accumulate £1000's worth of debt on yearly house renovations/flashy cars/luxury holidays/beauty treatments/designer clothes as none of those things interest me in the slightest and I'm happy with my 12year old banger and tatty carpets.

They are unkind. Would they prefer a parent deceased at a young age like you?

The only people I’ve known who live above their means have lots of debt or are living off ill-gotten gains. Do either of them work in a role with financial responsibility?!

Why is it anyone's business except hers? If she has the money and isn't in debt, who is to say what she can and can't spend it on????

A friend of mine just won a six figure sum on her premium bonds. I bet she didn’t tell anyone at work about it.

Exactly. I inherited money but there's no way on earth I am telling anyone at work about it 🤣

Why on earth would I?- so I can have lots of people ask me to lend them money or make snarky comments about "alright for some" or invest in their stupid get rich quick schemes?- No thank you.

I always point this out on here when people say "I don't know anyone who...: or "nobody in my circle...." (whether it relates to how much they earn/save/are in debt, or anything else), no, you dont KNOW about anyone else, full stop. You might assume but you don't know. Your closest friends and family could be keeping a lot from you, let alone acquaintances. None of my friends or extended family (parents, sisters etc) know how much I earn or how much I have in savings, and I would hazard a guess they'd be surprised if they did.

Salyexley · 31/03/2026 21:38

Maybe they have cheaper rent or mortgage, maybe they have savings, maybe they have huge debt, I personally have a low income but I probably live better in some ways as someone who earns a lot more as I don't drive, my rent is cheaper, and I get refund if I need a taxi to work ad I'm disabled

Blueshoey484 · 31/03/2026 21:35

Of course women have to be prostitutes or have ok only fans if they are doing well in life. Of course. No other reason it could be
