AIBU to use main bathroom on holiday despite en suite?

Last Easter I went away with DH, Sister and BIL. We stayed in an castle apartment.
As I have IBS and other gut issues I insisted on having a bedroom with an en suit for my benefit and everyone else’s. This was fine, DH and I got the room with the little en-suite. On the first night we were watching a film in the living room and I got up to pop to toilet, I went into the main bathroom and they all started shouting that I should use my own bathroom. I laughed and said I’m only going for a wee and this was met with more shouting of “you have your own toilet”, DH then said “she does this at home too, claims ownership on one toilet then uses everyone else’s”

Anyway it went on and on, the whole 3 nights were spent with them trying to stop me using the main bathroom. I think it started as a joke but they were 100% being serious by the end of it.

Anyway we’re due to go back tomorrow, same place and already sister is dropping hints about whoever gets the en suite uses that exclusively.

Am I the one in the wrong here?? I’m only using main bathroom for peeing btw

What does your DH mean about you doing this at home?

I think they are probably resentful about you insisting on an en suite for some reason, like it limits the options of where to stay, bumps the cost up but you don't pay more, means you always get the best room.

The fact you don't want your husband to use the en suite is a bit much OP. Is that because you are embarrassed about how it ends up after you use it, due to your gut problems? Or because you might need it short notice and worry it won't be free?

It sounds as though OP has a special toilet at home just for her own use where husband is not allowed to go but still uses other bathrooms in the house.

The en-suite doesn’t have a shower so we need to use the main bathroom anyway to shower.
we won’t be booking this place again as it’s just not worth the hassle. One of the other apartments has two en-suite and a main bathroom so we’ll get that one next time

Presumably it has a bath which is what the person who takes the en-suite should use.

Three bathrooms between two couples, so you can have a choice of main or en suite, are you paying the extra?

TryUmph · 28/03/2026 14:34

I suspect there is more background to this than you are letting on. Have you somehow let toilet choices become part of your identity? Is your IBS so bad that it has really affected who you are? This feels like an odd situation just in isolation. Perhaps you should choose the accommodation next year and make sure there are enough toilets for your needs.

What does your DH do when he wants a wee - does he walk up to the en-suite?

I prefer him not to but I don’t stop him. It’s just easier for it to be a one person toilet

This is insane. You're now more than unreasonable and need to get a massive grip. I'm surprised they're going away with you again. I have IBS, it's awful. But you're out of line.

We stay with family on holiday regular and my parents get the en suite if there is only one. I’ve never even thought of banning them from the other bathrooms, a quick wee is never a bother.

This is where I'm at.

This type of thread makes me realise how bloody weird other people are (and I get irritated by plenty of 'small' things)!

Tableforjoan · 28/03/2026 14:26

Even more unreasonable if you want a whole bathroom to yourself and yet expect to share the other toilets.

If you want a private toilet then only use that toilet. If you want to share then share all toilets.

This has to be a piss take, pun intended. 😂 “Spooky corridor” isn’t a justification for anything, past age 7.

TulipCat · 28/03/2026 14:25

This is about privacy and respect. You have a private bathroom en suite to your bedroom. They too should have a private bathroom in that case. The fact that it isn't attached to their room is neither here nor there. Stick to your space, they stick to theirs.

That would be why DH is using their toilet then, if you're going to monopolise a toilet, actually use it, you can't dissuade everyone from using yours, then want to use theirs, just because you're being a wimp about a corridor.

ColdAsAWitches · 28/03/2026 14:24

Or to put it another way, you've now claimed 1.25 bathrooms, where everyone else has 0.25. Very unreasonable.

Loubelou71 · 28/03/2026 14:22

Would you like them to wee in your ensuite if it happened to be nearer...I doubt it.

I prefer him not to but I don’t stop him. It’s just easier for it to be a one person toilet

So, in a house with 2 toilets, you want to reserve one for your sole use whilst insisting that the 3 other people share the other toilet, that you are also free to use whenever you feel like it? You can't see how that would annoy the others?

AliceNotInChains · 28/03/2026 14:15

So you are hugging two bathrooms! You clearly won't let the other couple use the en-suite. I can't believe you don't see how you're being unreasonable.

DrFoxtrot · 28/03/2026 14:21

The accommodation is not set up for you to have your own private toilet. You would need at least three bathrooms for that to work. Your understandable need for privacy does not trump everyone else’s. If I was your sister I would not want to be sharing a bathroom with your husband when there’s a perfectly good en suite that both you and DH can use.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 28/03/2026 14:20

Oh and OP as you are going back there tomorrow- you need to tell your SIL and BIL that as you had the better bedroom last time, it’s their turn to have the nice room.

outerspacepotato · 28/03/2026 14:19

You wanted your own bathroom, use it.

Spooky? 🤡 You're an adult.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 28/03/2026 14:17

OP - so two couples went away and there were two bathrooms. You and your dh had exclusive use of one bathroom as it was en suite to your bedroom, you are surprised the other couple would expect to have exclusive use of the other bathroom?

Particularly when you’d insisted on having the en suite room because you have gut issues?

YABU.

I would say on next trip, you let SIL and BIL have the room down the spooky corridor with the en suite and you and dh have the main bathroom.

Wow, so you secretly don't even want your husband using YOUR toilet?

But you are still using the one that is meant for everyone else?

Baffled! Confused

Zov · 28/03/2026 14:16

5128gap · 28/03/2026 14:13

You also need to factor in that they're probably not loving the fact that you will have bagged the master bedroom in order to get the en suite. If you're paying equally, they will already have the less good room and the lesser convenience of not having an en suite. To then argue with them when they ask you to stick to your own bathroom is unlikely to have landed well.

Yes exactly. They are probably feeling resentful and annoyed.

And I would be too.

The resentment won't end at the end of the holiday either. They will never let the OP forget it. And I am willing to bet that they won't go on holiday with her again!

PepsiBook · 28/03/2026 14:16

No, you have made it clear you want your own toilet - let them have theirs.
They don't want you using their clean hand towel or cleaning their toilet seat after your using it.
You're being really rude.
Your update is ridiculous - you don't really even want your own husband to use your personal toilet, but you should be free to use theirs? What if they've just pooped and they're worried about you going in.
Your husband is not banned from using it, because where should he go otherwise?

AliceNotInChains · 28/03/2026 14:15

DrFoxtrot · 28/03/2026 13:20

Is your DH allowed to use the en suite?
