AIBU to use main bathroom on holiday despite en suite?

Last Easter I went away with DH, Sister and BIL. We stayed in an castle apartment.
As I have IBS and other gut issues I insisted on having a bedroom with an en suit for my benefit and everyone else’s. This was fine, DH and I got the room with the little en-suite. On the first night we were watching a film in the living room and I got up to pop to toilet, I went into the main bathroom and they all started shouting that I should use my own bathroom. I laughed and said I’m only going for a wee and this was met with more shouting of “you have your own toilet”, DH then said “she does this at home too, claims ownership on one toilet then uses everyone else’s”

Anyway it went on and on, the whole 3 nights were spent with them trying to stop me using the main bathroom. I think it started as a joke but they were 100% being serious by the end of it.

Anyway we’re due to go back tomorrow, same place and already sister is dropping hints about whoever gets the en suite uses that exclusively.

Am I the one in the wrong here?? I’m only using main bathroom for peeing btw

My god the majority of people here are being ridiculous. From the title I assumed you were taking long luxurious baths in the main bathroom not going for a quick wee 😂 who really cares?!?! FFS, so petty!

Why does it only go one way, though? Why is it petty that OP wouldn't be willing to freely let her DSis and BIL use her en-suite if the 'main' bathroom was occupied? In fact, why is it not petty that she resents her own DH using it, when it's clearly there for occupants of that bedroom?

In general, if you go out of your way to be petty and unreasonable to other people, they frequently reciprocate.

Hoolieghoul · 30/03/2026 15:08

I don't think I'd care if someone who had an en suite used the main bathroom if I were on holiday with them, but it's clearly pissing off your family, so you shouldn't do it. The spooky corridor excuse is ridiculous! You're a grown woman, you know it's safe, and you presumably agreed to rebook this property so I don't think you can claim to be so freaked out you can't traverse the corridors by yourself.

We once made a big meal for about 12 of us friends at uni - half were vegetarian and half were omnivores (and nobody in the latter group had made a request to have a veggie version); so we had one huge dish for 6 people and another for the other 6.

When we put the serving dishes out on the table, making it very clear which was which, two of the omnis fancied the look of the veggie one (or maybe just grabbed at the nearest one, I can't fully remember), and instantly helped themselves to about two thirds of it between them.

It's definitely a mindset that some people have: automatically putting themselves front and centre and not even registering that other people might have needs, preferences or feelings too.

Edited

Oh gosh, that would also annoy me.
It's exactly that, putting their needs above everyone else's.

OP has her own bathroom, but even that isn't enough.

well why didn't you say that in your original post then rather than the drip-feed?

So spooky that they booked it a second time

She also didn't mention that her DSis and BIL's names are Velma and Shaggy.

I was only using it for weeing and the apartment is spooky, the main bathroom is next to the living room. The en-suite is in the bedroom at the far end of a dark spooky corridor. I know it sounds daft but I’m not the only one freaked out by that corridor

I can't believe people actually get worked up about this stuff. The mind boggles

You're the type that says they don't want chips, then continue to pick at someone else's.

It's the principle. YABU.

I'm sorry, but they are being absolutely bizarre. The main bathroom is for anyone to use. Who cares about people having a quick wee in any bathroom?! As long as you're not hogging it while they're waiting to have a shower in the morning, the main bathroom is fair game. They are absolute weirdos.

But they are two couples with two bathrooms, so the 'main' bathroom is clearly not being used as a main bathroom for their stay, as it would if it were a family with young kids staying there.

Just like some places may have a downstairs bedroom with all the rest upstairs... if you only need 3 bedrooms (and are all able-bodied and fully mobile) and the place has 3 bedrooms upstairs and a fourth one downstairs, you may well agree to use that as an additional communal room for everybody.

However, if you need to use all 4 bedrooms for the people in your group, you wouldn't declare the downstairs one as a bonus 'communal bedroom' and have all the people with upstairs bedrooms using it freely to store their personal effects in, pop in there whenever they want to change, check their makeup, top up their deodorant or have a little nap after a busy morning out; with the person/people whose bedroom it is just smiling as they see everybody else trampling through, and just hoping that it might be free when they need it.

IBS can be messy & make a terrible smell as well as prolonged time in the toilet using lots of paper. Keep to your own toilet, even for wees. They will have their toiletries, toothbrushes etc in that main toilet & will not want poop discrepancies in there. Presumably when you IBS hits you make your way down that same spooky corridor?

rookiemere · 30/03/2026 09:36

Thinking about it, the more people use a bathroom, the smellier it is likely to become. Particularly with males who tend to spray even if they think they aren’t.
Fair enough you commandeered the en suite, others probably assumed your DH would use that too. Instead he uses the main bathroom and then you decide to use it too. I can see why the others are annoyed.

In your original post you were unreasonable, in this post you have added “ridiculous” to that.

I prefer him not to but I don’t stop him. It’s just easier for it to be a one person toilet

You are not only ridiculous but very entitled ! You wanted your own bathroom so bloody use it .
Its like buying yourself a chocolate cake and won't share but want to eat some of the cake someone else bought for themselves , you see how utterly entitled that is ?

Gemz1010g · 30/03/2026 08:48

I think YABU as your sister is probably making a bigger accommodation than you realise, having ibs is one thing but for a lot of women having a poo on vacation is difficult even if they don't have bowel issues, I have ibs c so don't to have to if I'm away from home but most of my friends struggle on vacation too. So if its stressing her out I can understand her getting annoyed if she's let you have privacy and still you use the shared one

The others should have just used your bathroom and toilet. Presumably the ghost isn't so fussy.

Whattt??? I am see why he sides with them saying “she does this at home too” Why the hell shouldnt he use the en suite aswell? You’re very controlling and demanding, it’s clear why they were all vexed, you don’t even want your DH using the en-suite, are you this entitled with everything in your life or just toilets? Do you even realise how irritating of a person you are? The votes and comments telling you that you are should be enough proof.

Challenger2A7 · 29/03/2026 23:48

Spooky corridor???? How old are you??? Three???? Pull yourself together, grow up, and use the en suite bathroom you fought for.

"The en-suite is in the bedroom at the far end of a dark spooky corridor. I know it sounds daft but I’m not the only one freaked out by that corridor"

This is drip feeding isn't it.
And yes it does sound daft - why hire the same apartment again if you think it's spooky?

Witchymadwoman · 29/03/2026 18:40

Presumably, you wash your hands after the wee? Who's towel are you using to dry them?

Exactly. OP is clearly sensitive to her what suits her but not what might bother others.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 29/03/2026 20:30

I think your comment that "We all have en-suites" is rather pertinent here!

exactly! It's weird how several posters have basically said "My family [insert completely different scenario]" and seem to think this is relevant?

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 29/03/2026 20:30

elh1605 · 29/03/2026 20:15

I agree with you. If only a wee why would you walk to other end of the place when there's a main bathroom next to the living room. We go away with family and all have en suites but there's a loo downstairs next to lounge and we all use it for a wee in the evenings.

I think your comment that "We all have en-suites" is rather pertinent here!

MerryUmberHedgehog · 29/03/2026 20:24

If you insist on having designated loos then stick to your own rules.
