AIBU to use main bathroom on holiday despite en suite?

Last Easter I went away with DH, Sister and BIL. We stayed in an castle apartment.
As I have IBS and other gut issues I insisted on having a bedroom with an en suit for my benefit and everyone else’s. This was fine, DH and I got the room with the little en-suite. On the first night we were watching a film in the living room and I got up to pop to toilet, I went into the main bathroom and they all started shouting that I should use my own bathroom. I laughed and said I’m only going for a wee and this was met with more shouting of “you have your own toilet”, DH then said “she does this at home too, claims ownership on one toilet then uses everyone else’s”

Anyway it went on and on, the whole 3 nights were spent with them trying to stop me using the main bathroom. I think it started as a joke but they were 100% being serious by the end of it.

Anyway we’re due to go back tomorrow, same place and already sister is dropping hints about whoever gets the en suite uses that exclusively.

Am I the one in the wrong here?? I’m only using main bathroom for peeing btw

I think your family are very rude and bad mannered.

It's one thing being sensitive to someone's health issues and it's another making a HUGE drama out of it so that you're embarrassed.

You are fully entitled to use any toilet.

I really think you need to nip this in the bud and make out how it upsets you before you go away. Talk to your partner and tell him to back you up.

Your partner sounds like an arse and TBH I'd not be with someone who treats me like that unless they have many more redeeming features.

Do you really converse with fellow adults before you/they go to the toilet as to what specific purposes you intend to fulfil in there?!

Also (and I don't really want an answer to this!), do you never go 'just for a wee' and then find that you need an upgrade?!

Yep, IBS is unpredictable as I said. You go in with one plan and come out having had a different experience.

I was only using it for weeing and the apartment is spooky, the main bathroom is next to the living room. The en-suite is in the bedroom at the far end of a dark spooky corridor. I know it sounds daft but I’m not the only one freaked out by that corridor

Oh for goodness sake. What's going to happen to you in the corridor? You wanted the en suite so use it.

NotAnotherChickenNugget · 28/03/2026 12:03

God this wouldn’t bother me at all! I expect an en-suite to save queues in the morning and evening when people are showering, brushing teeth etc, I wouldn’t think twice if someone with an en-suite used the main bathroom, which is right next to the living area, to pop in for a wee in the middle of the day!

pinotnow · 28/03/2026 12:03

I cant believe how petty and territorial people are being about a sodding toilet. I would assume en suites are for use first and last thing as well as in the middle of the night and see no issue with someone using the main bathroom to have a quick wee in during the course of an evening. What a total non-issue, ffs. If op is constantly in there despite having the en suite, or refused to let someone use the en suite on occasion when needed then I could see the point, but the day I am outraged because a close family member does a wee in the main bathroom of the holiday accommodation I have chosen to share with her is the day I would really question my priorities. I also think the dh comment was really horrible.

It does seem to be causing an issue for these people though so maybe it would be better to find accommodation with two ensuites as they are clearly resentful of op having one.

'Spooky corridor' Grin Grin Grin Grin
And all this was a year ago? A whole year?

I have to ask OP - are you quite well?

Seriously??? You insist on the room at the end of a spooky hall so you have your own bathroom, then refuse to use your own bathroom because it's at the end of a spooky corridor?

And the..... You return to the same holiday home the following year with the spooky hall that terrified you so much you couldn't walk down or to use your own bathroom?

I have to ask.... Are you 6 years old?

CorvusPurpureus · 28/03/2026 11:56

I bet it’s Chillingham Castle…?

The easy solution is to let the other couple have the en-suite room, & you & dh then have sole use of the main, non spooky bathroom.

But yeah, the en suite bedroom is usually the nicer/bigger/master bedroom. You can’t have that as a perk AND go using their bathroom too.

Notsosweetcaroline · 28/03/2026 11:51

If you only use it for a wee and don’t leave bad smells then it’s fine, but clearly they think you are doing this, I’ve no idea why they think you do this, but they do. If you do leave bad smells then use the en-suite, you’re a grown up and can navigate a corridor.

badboss2020 · 28/03/2026 11:53

YABU. That would piss me off too. All my stuff would be out in “my bathroom” and you insisted on having your own.

VickyEadieofThigh · 28/03/2026 11:52

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 28/03/2026 11:28

Are you and DH paying more for the use of the en-suite? Does seem like you want everything your way.

Spooky corridors are a pathetic excuse.

Indeed. Why book the place again if a corridor freaks you out?

youalright · 28/03/2026 11:52

KimberleyClark · 28/03/2026 11:24

I really can’t see the issue if it was only a wee.

The issue is they probably all ended up paying more the others have probably accepted a shitter smaller room because op made an issue of it then she has the cheek to use the other bathroom after causing an issue. I would imagine the others where already pissed off and that tipped them over

user1492757084 · 28/03/2026 11:51

If you want the main bathroom then choose a bedroom near the main bathroom.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 28/03/2026 11:51

midgetastic · 28/03/2026 11:46

The far end of a spooky corridor ! Oh of course that makes all the. Difference. If you are 7

but if you have a private bathroom isnt it polite to let the other couple also have a private bathroom

I'm also finding it very difficult to come to terms with an adult avoiding using a major part of the home "because it's spooky" and there may be monsters there.

Notsosweetcaroline · 28/03/2026 11:51

Changename12 · 28/03/2026 11:49

Is this a reverse?

Changename12 · 28/03/2026 11:48

You have already taken the more convenient bathroom. The other one belongs to the other couple.

ColdAsAWitches · 28/03/2026 11:47

You're giving yourself the use of two bathrooms, and while you're in there, depriving everyone else of any. Of course you're being unreasonable. I bet you don't contribute to the cleaning of the main bathroom either.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 28/03/2026 11:46

I think they likely assumed that OP wanted the en-suite as hers, rather than the bathroom in the main part of the place, for privacy reasons - as opposed to her wanting an extra private facility as well as sharing theirs.

I've always thought an ensuite is for morning/evening ablutions and night time loo trips. During the day I'd use whichever bathroom is closest, as long as it didn't mean going through someone else's bedroom.

I don't really see how OP is inconveniencing anyone. Presumably they don't have a queuing situation.

Don't you think it's quite 'convenient', though, if you end up with 'what's mine is mine and what's yours is shared'?

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 28/03/2026 11:42

Why would you keep doing it when they'd already said it annoyed them? I agree btw, you were unreasonable, use your own bathroom that you insisted on having

OP wants privacy for her private bodily functions like someone (not a family member) not using the bathroom after she has made it stinky. Her friends deserve the same considerations for their private bodily functions as it is easily accommodated with one bathroom each.

DysmalRadius · 28/03/2026 11:41

Is your husband allowed to use the main bathroom?

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 28/03/2026 11:40

Aside from the fact that they have no way of knowing in advance what you might need, the very reason why you've insisted on your own private bathroom is because of IBS and gut issues.

In addition to you expecting to use their bathroom when you have your own in the first place, it's not unreasonable that they might naturally put two and two together and think that you may well leave the only bathroom that they have available honking for ages afterwards.
