AIBU to use main bathroom on holiday despite en suite?

Last Easter I went away with DH, Sister and BIL. We stayed in an castle apartment.
As I have IBS and other gut issues I insisted on having a bedroom with an en suit for my benefit and everyone else’s. This was fine, DH and I got the room with the little en-suite. On the first night we were watching a film in the living room and I got up to pop to toilet, I went into the main bathroom and they all started shouting that I should use my own bathroom. I laughed and said I’m only going for a wee and this was met with more shouting of “you have your own toilet”, DH then said “she does this at home too, claims ownership on one toilet then uses everyone else’s”

Anyway it went on and on, the whole 3 nights were spent with them trying to stop me using the main bathroom. I think it started as a joke but they were 100% being serious by the end of it.

Anyway we’re due to go back tomorrow, same place and already sister is dropping hints about whoever gets the en suite uses that exclusively.

Am I the one in the wrong here?? I’m only using main bathroom for peeing btw

Came here from birthday candle gate to see what toilet gate was all about. I don't think the toilet issue will be a problem in future as it sounds like you and your sister won't be going away together again.

We’re going away in June actually, and again in October but won’t be taking husbands

Why can't you just use your own bathroom? Is there a reason? And what about their privacy, maybe they would also quite like a bathroom that they can use and not feel it's a public space too? I respect you have IBS but even without it's nice to not have to share a bathroom with other people

This thread has turned nuts! I
of course you can use the nearest bathroom for a quick wee.

She is also using it to shower rather than use the bath in the en suite.

OP wouldn't agree with you had one of the others been near the 'spooky' corridor (and thus closest to her en-suite) when they needed a quick wee.

She’s told us that she used it for a wee. I tend to believe her.

I'm sure she's telling the truth too. I'm also glad that she has such easily-controlled IBS that she can be confident that it won't have the same sudden effects that it often has on a great many sufferers; and I'm also impressed at the psychic powers of the other three that they too can know for a fact that the person who insisted on the en-suite because of her condition will 'only be having a wee' this time (which she could incidentally still just as easily have done in her own personal toilet).

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 31/03/2026 15:18

Where did I say she was lying? Just stating a fact that applies to most of us. I'm not denying that she has IBS at all; just saying that she can't have things both ways: unpredictable when it comes to getting the en-suite but totally predictable when it comes to using somebody else's en-suite equivalent.

OP doesn't owe any of us on here anything; it's her DH, DSis and BIL who have been put out.

Ask them if they'd rather smell diahorrea next to their bedroom and let them squirm .
Then say you were trying to be considerate but you won't bother next time. But i have adhd so maybe don't follow my advice and use a filter.

Eh? OP insisted it was only a wee, so how do get diarrhoea from that? Or has it turned into a deliberate dirty protest now?

I was only using it for weeing and the apartment is spooky, the main bathroom is next to the living room. The en-suite is in the bedroom at the far end of a dark spooky corridor. I know it sounds daft but I’m not the only one freaked out by that corridor

Well this is bonkers.

Sure, she might be lying about her bodily functions for the sake of 'winning' the thread. 🙄

So OP informs us. However, the others don't know what she's going in there for; all they know is that she has bad IBS that she cited as the justification for insisting on the en-suite in the first place.

Moreover, surely one very major characteristic of IBS is that it is often sudden and unpredictable. If OP can be absolutely certain that she will only have a wee and no urge for anything more, considering that most of us who don't suffer from IBS will have occasions where we find that we need a 'surprise upgrade', it's not especially strengthening OP's case for insisting that she simply had to have the en-suite for her own exclusive use, is it?

But she hasn't been using the main bathroom for a shit Confused I don't get your point.

So long as you are ok with them all coming into your en-suite for a shit , OP, then I can’t see an issue. Shit stinks after all regardless of whether or not one has IBS

You “ insisted” on claiming the en-suite and then have the audacity to use the main bathroom. No, you use “ your “ bathroom that YOU made a claim on, end of!

Also, why are you going back to the same castle apartment, when you are too infantile to walk across a corridor, to get to YOUR bathroom??

Utter madness and entitlement!

Lulu1919 · 31/03/2026 07:47

Use ‘your’ en suite
been in a property where one bedroom had en-suite other room used the other bathroom exclusive use

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 31/03/2026 07:17

Well aren’t you the special one! First you INSIST on having the bedroom with the en-suite, the then you make excuses as to why you won’t use it, and INSIST its ‘only a wee’ when you use their bathroom.

So special 👌🏻 (and bloody rude and entitled!)

In normal circumstances, without any kind of demanding insistence going on, I imagine nobody would have batted an eyelid about this. But your princess behaviour has got their backs up - and you are now reaping your justice rewards. Deal with it Princess.

Rileysp · 31/03/2026 06:48

In all seriousness if you’ve got an en suite you insisted on, you use the en suite.

Rileysp · 31/03/2026 06:47

What a load of shit

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 31/03/2026 06:33

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 30/03/2026 20:14

Why does it only go one way, though? Why is it petty that OP wouldn't be willing to freely let her DSis and BIL use her en-suite if the 'main' bathroom was occupied? In fact, why is it not petty that she resents her own DH using it, when it's clearly there for occupants of that bedroom?

In general, if you go out of your way to be petty and unreasonable to other people, they frequently reciprocate.

You can tell the entitled ones from this thread.
Just the "who cares" comments, when many have said why and considering the tread is about OP's sister, BIL and even DH caring says it all.
No regard for anyone else.

BufferingAgain · 30/03/2026 22:24

The thing is in order to get the en suite you told everyone you needed your own bathroom ‘for everyone else’s sake’ which will have created a certain picture in their head. They don’t know what you’re doing in the other toilet or that it’s just a wee?
