Intrigued as to what is deemed as a good amount and how people get to zero.

Rather than cooking to recipe, freestyle around what you've got in stock that is older. Meal planning and careful shopping sound too much effort to me, we get a veg box and eat what's in it, starting with the things that keep least long.

PottingBench · 27/03/2026 17:35

No food waste here at all.

I make a food plan for a few days, then shop for that plan. Anything that for any reason isn't eaten is frozen and used later e.g. veg in soups or bread is made into stuffing.

Peelings go in the compost.

FernandoSor · 27/03/2026 17:34

None. It’s not a conscious thing at all. We just eat what food we have.

fruitfly3 · 27/03/2026 17:32

I’m bad at this - hate cooking and everything associated, and life is so busy I can’t keep tabs on the dates. I do meal plan. In the last month I’ve thrown - pack of meatballs, pack of prawns, 2 leeks, 1/2 bag carrots, 1/2 bag potatoes, bag of salad and probably other bits. Gutted every time. Sometimes I get the wrong date in my mind, others plans change and we don’t eat the meal we expected to.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 27/03/2026 17:31

Virtually none as I have the same meals every 7 days, so know what I need to buy.

Greycheck · 27/03/2026 17:30

Too much. I am trying to get better organised but I can't get into meal planning so buy all sorts, forget I have it and then rediscover it when clearing out the fridge ahead of the next shop. I need to do better.

damelza · 27/03/2026 17:28

I'm obviously not perfect and some things get chucked. I live alone so there's not that much waste, but sometimes I forget what's at the back of the fridge, or I might buy something that I just don't like and can't freeze or use otherwise.

I freeze bread, cakes (!), fish, mash, veg, fruit, milk, butter, if fact anything I can safely. I also used canned, tinned goods and jars of say mayo, they last forever!

I'm in awe of the perfection of some posters not to even waste a carrot top!

I'm human though and I err now and then.

DeQuin · 27/03/2026 17:26

We waste quite a lot but we are in a household full of autistic eating and ARFID which means you want to have food available for the moment someone might want to eat it but that’s rare and unpredictable. I have four week old apples going out today because they have gone past the point of crispness despite having been kept in the fridge and no-one will eat them now. No-one will eat cooked apples, so it’s time for them to go. Other times we get through 5 apples a day so it’s hard to get right. I think the more people you are catering for the harder it is to avoid waste.

likelysuspect · 27/03/2026 17:24

Me - virtually none, tea bags, coffee bags, the odd bit of peel like onions, pepper tops, bits of spring onions etc. I freeze virtually everything in portions, I eat things past their use by date as they're nearly always fine. I dont buy lots of fresh veg, only those that last forever in the fridge, I only cook up precise amounts that I freeze. I buy what Im planning. I dont eat fresh fruit

OH - huge amounts of waste, he over buys and overcooks. wont eat vegetables but cooks them up and they're left on the plate, he cant eat normal portion sizes but cooks up enough for a family of 4. I dont eat the food he eats which is fairly junky or tasteless muck as far as Im concerned. Splodges huge amounts of brown sauce, mustard or whatever on the plate and proceeds to have minscule amounts on each forkfull, so that is scraped off in the bin. He wont eat left overs or things that have been in the freezer longer than a few weeks. Wont eat things that are already open more than one night. Goes through phases of buying things and eating them constantly so buys tons of it and then goes off it and wont eat any more. Buys a pack of rolls, only eats one roll. Wont meal plan. Wasteful

Nourishinghandcream · 27/03/2026 17:20

We genuinely have no food waste.😁

Food waste bin is filled with peelings, eggshells, teabags etc but never actual food.
Done by keeping an eye on the larger/fridge etc and using accordingly.
Maybe it means having the same meal 2-days running or having toast instead of cereals if the bread is a bit stale but it is easy enough to do. Alternatively if something is getting to the end of its date and there is still no chance of it being used, it goes into the freezer.

They go on the compost.

Oh, okay to us it's just one and the same really. We compost pretty much any food waste (but don't really eat meat).

squashyhat · 27/03/2026 17:18

Stale bread for the birds and a small amout of cooked leftovers (when our food waste collection kicks in it will go in there) Raw food waste (of which there isn't much) goes to make lovely rich compost.

Parsleyforme · 27/03/2026 17:18

I freeze lots, even if it’s just a tub of a few bananas that were going brown. Occasionally I get a slimy carrot or mouldy courgette that goes in the compost bin, but everything else gets eaten or frozen. I eat what I have rather than what I fancy, so will always buy favourite bits and won’t go to the shops during the week. If something is about to go off that is a priority and will either be a meal or snack that day. I shop online at Asda and things tend to last well, unlike at some of the other supermarkets, except for soft berries which get squashed no matter where I buy them

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 27/03/2026 17:17

V little, we plan every meal and check the dates of things to make sure we're eating them in time. We compost or recycle inedible bits. I hate food waste, it costs us millions collectively. I hate meal planning too, but less 😅

I'd say once a month we maybe chuck some slightly slimy spinach or something like that.

Compost heap 🙂

AAh, ok. I don't have a garden . . .

Janesput · 27/03/2026 17:16

NigellaDelia · 27/03/2026 17:16

I thought that but now I have it I use it for egg shells, tea bags, banana peel, vegetable peelings etc. There's never much in the bin on collection day but it's still worth doing IMO

thinktoomuchtoooften · 27/03/2026 17:07

Very little. So little I won’t be using a food waste bin

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 27/03/2026 17:15

None at all unless something goes wrong 😂
We don't buy any processed stuff. We do not do a 'big shop' though, we meal plan and only buy exactly what we need. All veg scraps to hens and all meat scraps to cats so pretty much nothing is thrown away.

DippingTheBeak · 27/03/2026 17:14

Every week we buy salad tomatoes and if there is half a tomato or even a couple left I wash and core them and stick them in a bag in the freezer. When I have lots I cook them down either into a pasta sauce or a soup which I add peppers and onion to.

Other veg, roast off and freeze to serve as sides to meals.

Bread, again freeze or make breadcrumbs. We meal plan so everything is pretty much accounted for.

Our chicken, fish, minced steak etc are from Costco so massive portions. Again, divide and freeze, sometimes with a marinade for the chicken. Any leftovers are eaten up so meatballs would be used in a sub etc. We get those flatbread garlic breads and only half is eaten so again, freeze it. Yes I have two freezers, one in the kitchen and one larder freezer in the pantry.

I think it helps that I have a Dh and adult sons who will make a meal out of anything we have.

thinktoomuchtoooften · 27/03/2026 17:14

Splantes · 27/03/2026 17:08

We have virtually zero food waste but use one for fruit veg waste - the tops of carrots, banana skins etc. Do you not have any of that?

They go on the compost.

Janesput · 27/03/2026 17:14

Not much at all, but I have time on my hands these days and shop for what I need every couple of days.

I plan my meals around what I have left in the fridge first and foremost, and tweak recipies to use things up. Eg this week I had a lone pepper, a couple of mushrooms and half a bag of spinach, so I made bolognaise and chucked the lot in. Often I make soup to use things up. I put leftovers in the freezer for an easy meal another time.

I use fresh produce in the order it will go off. E.g. if there are strawberries and blueberries in the fridge, I'd use the strawberries first. A slightly brown banana or an apple, I'd use the banana, regardless if I'd prefer the apple!

I'm also not that worried about dates. An out of date egg, cheese, yogurt would be used. I'm more careful with meat, but a day or two if it looks and smells OK, I'd still use it. Never fish, but I'd buy that on the day I plan to use it.

MilliM · 27/03/2026 17:14

Two of us here.
Veg and fruit peelings is the main one, they go on compost.
Leftover cooked food is eaten or frozen. If I have leftover potato or veg it goes in a bag in the freezer and ends up in soup.
I do sometimes find the odd jar of spices that's very out of date. Most I will still use but often it's gone out of date because I don't like it.
I have a chest freezer and upright so lots of freezer space and anything we're not eating straight away gets frozen.

alloutofcareunits · 27/03/2026 17:14

We have no food waste, shop once or twice a week, eat salad based meals at the beginning of the week when it’s fresher then veg curries, chillis, pasta later in the week. I make soup with any veg left over. Buy fish to go with salad e.g. frozen tuna steak, salmon fillets, we don’t eat meat. Not sure what else we eat really, frozen berries last and Greek yogurt has a long shelf life. We buy oat milk which is used before it expires. Canned pulses, that’s about it. No kids at home though which probably helps

NigellaDelia · 27/03/2026 17:13

Hardly any food waste here - I live by myself so it's easy for me to keep tabs on what needs using up. I have a food delivery once a fortnight and top up locally in between

I make a meal plan and base my big shop on that, but often change it as I may have leftovers from the previous day to use up

I have a soup maker and use up odds and ends of veg in that, so often have soup for lunch

My DM was a teenager during WW2 and was extremely good at using up food and I think I've inherited it from her!

NotThisAgainSunshine · 27/03/2026 17:12

Minimal waste in our household.

Food is frozen if close to sell by date.

Also a lot of food is eaten past its sell by date, as long as it still smells fresh.
