AIBU for kissing DP on school run when DD dislikes it?

DD has had yet another massive go at me after school today. I broke up from her father when she was v young. Didn’t date for ages. Met a school run dad (now DP) in September, knew each other for a while then dated and went from there. Obviously we can’t see loads of each other so school run is one of only opportunities in week. Naturally happy to see each other and embrace/kiss as any normal couple would. DD kicking off saying she doesn’t want to see this.

AIBU? She can’t expect me to remain single for ever surely ?

You've had years of taking your daughter to school so you will have observed how many people kiss in the school playground. Have you observed that lots of people do it or do they realise it's not appropriate?

Also I don't know why it's obvious that you mostly see a person you are dating when on the school run. Just a thought but perhaps you could meet him at other times?

She was extra annoyed today because DP lifted me up ,got a bit carried away we haven’t seen each other since last week due to his work. We won’t repeat that but it’s just natural to be excited to see someone surely

This thread must be a joke. “11 Year Old Embarrassed by Mother’s Excessive PDA with Brand New Partner on BBC News at 10.” and if this is how you actually think about things - “She got embarrassed when my new partner WHO IS ALSO A SCHOOL PARENT picked me up and swung me around like a movie. Dos she expect me to stay single forever?!?” Then wooooo boy does your daughter have some rough years ahead. So what’s it like - you and he see each and you just go for it, like he just came back from the war?

And no. It’s not normal to act that way when you see people unless you have a very dramatic life. That’s why it’s such an iconic photo after WW2, of the sailor dipping the nurse in a kiss on D-Day… because it’s not something that just happens on the fucking school run 😂

Fucking hell. There isn’t an 11 year old on planet Earth that wouldn’t be mortified by this behaviour.

Your boyfriend lifted you up? At school???

If my DH did this to me in the school playground, I would think he had lost his mind.

The phrase ‘Get a room’ has never been more apt.

Bait

Createausername1970 · 26/03/2026 18:28

I agree with others. Wait till she has gone in before you start hugging and kissing.

She is probably very embarrassed and no doubt getting her leg pulled about it. I would have been mortified if my parents were kissing at my school gates.

It's not your DP it's your new boyfriend and kissing and lifting in the air on the school run is entirely unnecessary

But, so sweet and romantic. 🩷

CinnamonBuns67 · 26/03/2026 18:28

No you aren't expected to stay single and obviously she will have to get used to you having a new partner and that you will reasonably show affection to that partner. However the school run is niether the time nor the place for that so yabu either find a different way to meet during the week or wait til the weekend.

Tacohill · 26/03/2026 18:27

YABU

Its embarrassing enough that you got with one of the dads but you are fully aware she’s not comfortable with it and still do it anyway.

You are literally dropping her off and there is no reason you can’t wait until afterwards.

Sounds like you’re both doing the performance for other people and don’t care that your child is feeling so uncomfortable.

Songbird54321 · 26/03/2026 18:27

In all my years of doing school runs I don’t think I’ve ever seen any parents kissing on the school yard. Maybe holding hands on the walk up. I find that strange regardless of your daughter’s opinion.
Add in the fact it’s clearly distressing for her, YABVU.

Oh come on.

I dont believe this

MrsWhites · 26/03/2026 18:25

Your poor daughter, she must be mortified and you are likely the talk of the playground with that kind of behaviour.

Sleepingbaggage · 26/03/2026 18:25

Definitely with the daughter here.

Even calling a man you've been dating six months your partner is a bit much. Kissing at the school gates is definitely cringey. I'd be embarrassed and I'm in my forties.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/03/2026 18:25

Honestly, the discomfort over this is worthy of analysis. 🤣

Tableforjoan · 26/03/2026 18:25

I bet she’s getting the mick taken by her mates badly.

Is that a joke? Who gets ‘carried away’ while outside a primary school packed with children?

plims · 26/03/2026 18:24

I wonder where all of my dc came from if I’m not getting any.

illsendansostotheworld · 26/03/2026 18:23

I am cringing for your daughter

ExperiencedTeacher · 26/03/2026 18:23

I kiss and embrace my partner in front of my kids occasionally. At home. Not in front of their friends. Not at their school. And rarely in public generally. It’s MY relationship, not theirs, and they don’t want or need to see me snogging him every time I see him.

moleeye · 26/03/2026 18:22

Way too much at school.

She will be ridiculed by all her friends - you need to rein it in.

TwistedWonder · 26/03/2026 18:22

I mean obviously we’re all just jellus I mean come on ladies who wouldn’t want to be felt up in the school playground in front of 11 year olds.

And as this pair just can’t keep their hands off each other I mean sure a cheeky BJ in the car park wouldn’t be a problem - those pesky kids can just deal with it

plims · 26/03/2026 18:22

AngelinaFibres · 26/03/2026 18:20

We're apparently jealous because we aren't getting any.

I think we’re probably getting more than the OP.

VivienneDelacroix · 26/03/2026 18:22

WhatAPavalova · 26/03/2026 18:03

😂 getting plenty but not getting any outside a primary school 😂

Well exactly!

It's really not nice for your daughter. When you say "school run" do you mean on the walk to school or actually at the school gate/ on the playground - because that's not nice for anyone.

Tableforjoan · 26/03/2026 18:21

AngelinaFibres · 26/03/2026 18:20

Well if she hasn’t seen him in a week I’m definitely getting more and leaving the playground out of it 😂😂
