Dh sulking after being away

Overitagain88 · 24/03/2026 21:34

Dh has been away for a couple of days with work. Left sunday lunchtime and back today about 16:00 so just over 48 hours away. And is now sulking that we haven't all made a massive fuss about him being home

For context there is me and 2 kids at home (9 and 5) i WFH on a tuesday and had just got back from school run (agreed I take a later lunch break on WFH days) and was just jumping on a call as DH came back

Kids were up playing in their bedrooms and didn't hear DH walk in

We then had to leave for a sporting activity we do on a Tuesday about 30 minutes after he walked in so it was all a mad rush and he is now in a strop saying we all should have made more of an effort to welcome him home

I've also had to feed the pets, sort the washing, lunches for tomorrow and finish off some work while hes sulking

Does he often behave like this, OP?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 24/03/2026 23:15

I feel really sorry for the kids here. Being shouted at because they didn't march downstairs and greet him. What a knob head.

They won't be returning home after they can leave, that's for sure.

Harsh thread

breadwinner comes home after an exhausting trip and gets zero respect or thanks, so shows his dissatisfaction

wife comes online to moan and everyone piles in on him

Geez

Show me a 5yo that understands/appreciates what a breadwinner is, or would know how to show respect in that way.

children that age model what they’ve been taught. He didn’t go out his way to greet them or make a fuss over them after being apart.

when I come in from work my dd sometimes runs to greet me - probably as she enjoys spending time with me and is wanting to do something fun. It doesn’t sound like OPs DH is the type of person a 5 yo would miss or excited to spend time with after him only being a way for such a short period. Says a lot about how the dc view their dad - and they’ve no doubt learned that from him so

Honestly girl, marriage sounds great but

Having your home without a man in it, is pure bliss 😌

Did he bring you back a gift? Flowers for holding down the fort? A handbag? Did he come home and make dinner?

Ask him what the fuck was wrong with his legs that he couldn't walk upstairs to say hallo to his children.

And tell him that sulking is incredibly childish and unattractive.

Geez

"Shows his dissatisfaction" ? I think you mean stands at the bottom of the stairs shouts and screams at his 9 year old child who was playing quietly in their room because they didn't run down stairs to welcome him.

He deserves zero respect.

His wife also works so she's a breadwinner too.

Poppinjay · 24/03/2026 23:09

If he's going to shout and scream at a child when he comes home, I'd tell him to bloody well stay away!

PotatoHeading · 24/03/2026 23:09

There was another thread on here recently almost identical. Maybe he has a twin or has been cloned. What is it with these men- children?

StarDolphins · 24/03/2026 23:07

My ex used to do this all the time, expected a big fanfare like king ding-a-ling! I honestly think he was jealous of our child. One of the days, me and my DD opened the door, threw confetti on him, blew some party blowers and followed him round clapping and stroking him! Then I got a bollocking for ‘taking the piss’.

There are some lovely men out there but a LOT of babies amongst them.

lazyarse123 · 24/03/2026 23:06

Wonderful way to make his kids miss him by screaming at them. Wanker. I hope you told him how out of order that was.

PeachySmile2 · 24/03/2026 23:05

Pathetic

Geez

Wtf! How do you know op doesn’t earn more (at the same time as keeping the house running and looking after the children…)?

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 24/03/2026 22:54

What a big baby! A couple of weeks away or more I may just about be able to understand him feeling a bit miffed but 48 hours - he’s seriously overreacting.

ChaliceinWonderland · 24/03/2026 22:49

Overitagain88 · 24/03/2026 21:51

So to clarify...

I did come out of the space I WFH in for a minute before joining the call I needed to be in, gave him a quick hug, said I needed to be on a call, kids were upstairs (actually playing nicely for once!) I'll be out in half an hour to get ready to go to activity, which we all go to

He then proceeded to shout and scream at our eldest as they didn't come down at all until told to. Youngest had come down looking for a toy and seen him. Eldest has been upset all night as it was a proper shouting (i wasn't in the room but heard it from the where I work)

But apparently too difficult for him to go upstairs and tell them hes home

Shout and scream? Abusive father, please tell dh to stop
That's really awful to read.

Geez

OP is a breadwinner too. Whilst looking after the family. That’s where the respect and thanks should lay.

He should have come in and said
’how can I help?’

He wanted an argument to be able to sulk and do absolutely nothing for anyone.

Geez

He's not the breadwinner. OP works too, as well as keeping house and kids under control singlehanded while His Royal Highness is away.

He sounds like a gigantic prick. But - just cracking open my copy of Amateur Psychology - do you think he’s acting out because he’s feeling guilty?

That seems like a bit of a leap. I agree he sounds horrible though.

he’s expecting the kids to come running and make a big fuss cos they missed him.
what did he do to make a big fuss and show them he missed them?

I often go away for work for one or 2 nights. I’d come in the door and shout up to say hi to my Dd, take my shoes off then run straight up to get a massive hug and tell her how good it was to see her.
why does he expect a 5 and 9 year old to show him more respect an attention than he shows them. He’s (supposedly) the adult

Offherrockingchair · 24/03/2026 22:37

Surely you should be the one sulking when you’ve held the fort for the last couple of days and done your usual job with fuck all help from him! I’d have expected him to come in, sort a snack and then take the kids to their activity to give you a break!!! But no, enter Captain Save the Day, expecting a huge fanfare. What a cock! Fuckity bye to him. Life’s too short!

Suedoh · 24/03/2026 22:36
