To think Labour is not the party of the working people.

I voted for Labour as I believed their election pledge of being a party for the working people but genuinely I can’t think of one thing, since they’ve been in power, that they’ve done to help me (a single working mother on around £42k a year)! I get zero help from UC, these mystical breakfast clubs don’t exist, people aren’t employing people due to their ridiculous NI implications, they aren’t building affordable housing, energy prices are insanely high and all they talk about is grants (which won’t affect me as I live in a flat)! Genuinely I can’t think of one thing that they’ve done to help working people in the middle. Why are Labour sticking their heads in the sand? Why do they refuse to help the squeezed working class? They are stopping this economy from thriving - as
nobody can afford to spend anything extra (treats, holidays, meals out etc etc)!

Interesting a lot of us on here quite like Kemi - I think in a sea of average, white make politicians she is great at holding her own! I think she really needs to get more working women on board. So we can iron out her shit policies

I think her policies are good. You can’t get everyone, obviously dedicated Labour or people moving to Greens won’t switch but she should stick with general policies.

She gets a lot of support on SM too.

pinkpalmleaves · 24/03/2026 21:18

@BlackRowanactual working people! The majority Labour don’t seem to be helping!!

You think 🤔

Dymaxion · 24/03/2026 21:17

She’s not going to get dedicated Labour / left voters. She’s doing well so far.

Is she though ? She is the leader of the opposition, so holding the Labour government to account is surely the whole point of her job ?
If she wants to win, she needs to win over the huge swathe of the country that is centre left and centre right.
To do this she needs decent, well costed policies that will mean that the majority of the country don't see a reduction in their standard of living, whilst also seeing improvements in local and national services.
She might also consider a little bit of re-nationalisation of some of the core utilities, given what an absolutely shocking job they have done as private companies, but that might be a step too far for a Conservative Grin

Labour have been in power for 20 months, delivered two budgets, and made things worse for most working people.
They made lots of promises on growth, integrity, no more tax rises, fully costed plans, smash the gangs, tread softly on our lives, end the chaos etc etc. All lies.

The Tories did tremendous damage. It says something when even Conservative voters such as myself and DH became very uncomfortable with their policies and votes differently for the first time ever. Don't even try to claim Labour have been worse.

dinbin · 24/03/2026 21:17

@runningpram DLA isn’t means tested so you would get it if your dc were eligible without losing your job.

dinbin · 24/03/2026 21:16

I will never forgive reform (well, ukip as they were) and the Tories for the destruction of Brexit. It has been the single worst UK political happening of my adult life.

what I find startling is how so many still want to refute the economic impact of Brexit & are so willingly to believe Nigel again.

Who are these magic working people?
some construction blokes that want to vote Reform?

majority of people are working people - from Deliveroo driver to a high earner.

runningpram · 24/03/2026 21:13

I have been looking at what i would get if i lost my job after decades paying in -c£350
for just six months and child benefit. No help with energy bills. I would still be on the hook to pay back the child benefit I was paid when my income was higher in my tax return.
Were I single mum with 4 kids some of them born before 2017 - i would get c £400 each c 400 for myself. Potentially hundreds more if one or more of the kids has Adhd/autism. DLA is not
covered by the benefitscap and help with housing costs on a LA flat. In addition possibly my kids could potentially inherit the tenancy. That is compared to a loan on the interest of my mortgage if I have worked and scrimped to buy a house so I can hope to keep a roof over my head.
Plus if i work 16 hours i get to keep my benefits and child maintenance does not affect them either.
It really feels as though it is a two tier benefit system - insanely generous to some and piteous to others - mainly those who have paid in.
In Germany people who lose their jobs get a significant proportion of their salary for a time but the benefits are less lavish for life style claimants.

AlwaysNuance · 24/03/2026 21:10

I am pretty glad we have Labour in right now tbh. I believe we are in a better position re this war of Trump's than if any other party was leading. Kemi or Farage would have had us jumping into this illegal war when Trump asked.

Question. Why are the Tory years allowed to be forgotten and yet Labour have just over a year and everyone is calling for them to be gone?

I agree with PP that we need to give those not working vouchers not cash. If you want cash you should have to work for it. We need to incentivise work more.

I am not opposed to that idea but I would really like a huge programme of building social housing that we don’t sell off.

Would that also apply to those who would love to work but can't for various reasons such as disability?

I agree. I’ve never voted Tory in my life, but at the moment, she is the best leader by a long shot.

I agree - she has really come into herself more confident
she runs rings around KS
I would vote for her

but like most politicians what they want to do and what they can do are vastly different

That is the question of the decade. Its not going to be Labour though. 14 years to prep and they've blown it comprehensively.

Question. Why are the Tory years allowed to be forgotten and yet Labour have just over a year and everyone is calling for them to be gone?

We pay a lot of tax as a household and I do agree with a safety net. It does frustrate me that public services are declining despite how much tax we pay. I would rather better public services and higher tax, I am just unsure how things are fixed now if they even can be.

The tax burden is the highest in seven decades or so. It’s Labour’s extra taxes on SMEs hammering growth already. Why would people want that tax burden to be higher?

Even Labour uttered you can’t tax your way to growth, then did it anyway. Surely people are realising the mistake of those higher taxes.

dinbin · 24/03/2026 21:05

Yes, it is depressing. I would love the parties to get together & be honest but I cant see it happening

They are stopping this economy from thriving

Do you think the economy was thriving under the previous government?

We are broke, never recovered from the 08 crash & chronic underinvestment. I don’t think any party can fix things now unfortunately.

Our taxes are too low (except for those higher earners on PAYE) for the services we expect and throw in the ageing population we are pretty screwed.

Edited

Definitely. We've also been in decline since Brexit thanks to the Tories holding that disastrous referendum. They can never again claim to do what's best for the economy.

ValidPistachio · 24/03/2026 21:04

Pineneedlesincarpet · 24/03/2026 20:40

We have the highest prices for electricity in the developed world. Thats down to government policy. Sorry. Green levies mainly. And the cost of renewables. Nick Clegg said no to nuclear too, the fool.

The green levy is about 8%. It funds sources of renewable energy, meaning we won’t have to import so much gas. The Tories have been in power for 32 out of the last 47 years. So, I don’t think we can reasonably lay all the blame for the lack of new power stations on Nick Clegg.

dinbin · 24/03/2026 21:02

Bist · 24/03/2026 20:53

Totally agree. I’ve lived in a high tax European country. The main difference was housing costs a minuscule amount compared to here so people had spare cash. Housing is such a massive issue here. And labour are doing little to help. Drastic policy changes are needed. Barely any building - residential or commercial property - is happening in London just now. It’s getting so much worse, not better.

Yes, I truly believe housing is the root of so many of our issues.

I live in London and there is some going on near me, but it’s so slow, expensive etc. So much needs to change, is there the impetus for radical change though?

I agree. The damage to public services has been so prolonged and cut so deep that I can’t see how they’ll ever recover. Even if the majority of people thought like us and voted in a government with that ambition the reality is that the damage is irreparable. Depressing, isn’t it?

Though the Greens are even worse.

So much worse. Why would any rational person vote Green. I’d say they’re actually more offensive to me than reform. Throwing women’s rights under a bus and rampant antisemitism. Utterly disgusting. I totally judge anyone who says they plan to vote Green as much as I judge Reform voters.

BIossomtoes · 24/03/2026 20:46

I think people have got used to a low tax economy. I’m ancient and when I started work the basic rate of income tax was 33% with 9% NI on top. Personally I’d rather have higher taxes and better public services but I appear to be in a minority. If only the UK had done what Norway did and used its North Sea oil revenue to create a sovereign wealth fund instead of frittering it away in tax cuts.
