AIBU to think DH’s joke after my car crash was inappropriate?

Someone went in to the back of my car earlier today when I was returning from nursery drop off. I was in traffic, so no harm done to me, but the car obviously needs some repairs. The man driving stopped and was apologetic and we swapped details.

I called DH and after checking I was okay, he ‘joked’ that ‘he has had more luck than me over the years in smashing your back doors in’. I told him I didn’t see the funny side.

He messaged me later to say I’m being uptight and to get a sense of humour.

There’s a time and a place, surely?

When I was a student I worked a summer in the office of a distribution company, one of the drivers was in a similar accident and the jokes about him getting his back doors smashed in were still going by the time I went back to uni. It's a bit crass, laddy, page 3 reader type humour but I wouldn't be offended

But would she have seen the funny side another day?

Perhaps the OP will answer that.

No, but the sentiment was the same, it was a joke, we laughed, none of us got offended and we went on with our day

I really don't think it is the same. The tone is completely different- yours was a sort of "Are you being served?" double entendre.

The thing is though, you and your husband obviously share the same type of humour and you would think it funny. The OP didn't and he told her she should alter her ways. If you have to tell someone to enjoy your jokes something isn't right.

I’d of just eye rolled then got on with my day. I wouldn’t of been offended at his joke or bothered by it

Coconutter24 · 23/03/2026 19:12

Candlesticko · 23/03/2026 19:02

He didn't refer to it as "smashing your back doors in" though, did he?

It means the same thing so what’s the difference?

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 23/03/2026 19:12

I would be a bit pissed off. Yes the accident wasn't serious but when I've had accidents in the past I still feel a bit shaken and upset after, and whilst I don't expect support, I think taking rhe piss straight after I'd told my husband would seriously annoy me.

Namingbaba · 23/03/2026 19:10

Does he usually make such jokes? Not my kind of humour, but I’m not offended. I just find such jokes awkward as I never usually laugh.

I thought from the title that it was going to be a more serious crash and that he was being insensitive. The car crash just created the set up for it, so it’s really just about his general sense of humour?

CornishTiger · 23/03/2026 19:09

I’d not find this funny either. The fixation some men have with anal sex is ridiculous.

BotterMon · 23/03/2026 19:08

Making a joke wouldn't bother me usually as it was a very minor bump however what he said is disgusting. Is he always so crass? Not much of a catch is he.

Imnotanewbie · 23/03/2026 19:07

Gross and insensitive.

TaupeFox · 23/03/2026 19:06

I can get why you felt it was inappropriate or bad taste especially because you had just been involved in an accident but he was most likely trying to lighten the mood and trying to give you a little laugh. I definitely would forgive him especially if he is normally a caring, good sort. Men can be absolute idiots at times, even the best ones.

Candlesticko · 23/03/2026 18:38

Yes that's what it means. It's absolutely horrible, car crash or not.

My vagina would seal itself shut forever after that comment.

iamfedupwiththis · 23/03/2026 19:05

Once again proof I live in alternative universe

WappityWabbit · 23/03/2026 19:05

He cracks a sick joke in bad taste and it’s immediately your fault for not having a sense of humour? Yuck! 🤮

Dobequiet · 23/03/2026 19:03

He sounds immature.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 23/03/2026 19:03

Well, in my experience even a small prang can be upsetting, unnerving and shake your confidence. I must be getting old, because I’d be properly pissed off (and shocked) of my man came out with his kind of bull-shittery. All your DH had to do was check you and DC weren’t hurt, be supportive/make sympathetic noises. End of. Where the fuck does “let’s use this an opportunity for a joke about my frustrated overtures toward anal sex” come into it?! The mind boggles.

Is your DH watching a lot of porn? Does he have a shit fetish? Does he have a penis that is so small that it gains insufficient friction within a standard vagina? Or is he just a bellend with a teenage sense of humour? My vagina (and anus) would clamp shut at this ill-timed attempt at ‘humour’.

Is he normally such a monumentally thoughtless, embarrassment of a man, OP, or is this an uncharacteristic blip?

Candlesticko · 23/03/2026 19:02

iamfedupwiththis · 23/03/2026 18:59

My husband said it as well, said the driver had more luck than he had over the years, we laughed, we got on with our day!

He didn't refer to it as "smashing your back doors in" though, did he?

Angelicake · 23/03/2026 19:01

I'd be shocked and astounded if dh said that to me under any circumstances.

Not in a pearl clutching way. Although it's a pretty disgusting way to speak
I know people do and I've heard worse without fainting away, but dh just doesn't talk that way and if he did I'd think he'd had some type of neurological event.
So no, you are not being at all unreasonable.

Has he had any luck since 😉

Edited

Haha no!

That's not remotely similar.

dapsnotplimsolls · 23/03/2026 18:58

He's a twat. Did he really expect you to find it funny?
