Forks are female and knives are male

And spoons are female too.
Or is it just me?

I also think letters and numbers are gendered and some of them have quite specific personalities. Eg. Both G and H are older matriarchal women.

I am aware I am coming across as an absolute loon.

Synesthesia? A friend has it and she has similar thoughts.

God, so this is what's to blame for the French language

Here's me thinking I'm the only sane one on this thread, but is it coincidence my memory is shit?

Abhannmor · 23/03/2026 08:17

It's a bit like days of the week having colours! I love it.

Yes!!! I have always felt that Wednesday's are red. I think the knife & fork gender is a thing (as many posters agree) but I'd forgotten that for years.
Thank you for this thread 😊

Yes, Wednesdays are red.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 23/03/2026 08:14

I'm not sure about cutlery, but cars have faces and I bought a new expensive car aged 45 based solely on the fact it looked less grumpy than the others on offer.

Spoons are children forks are mummies and knives are daddies I thought that was obvious til I told someone and they looked at me like I was deranged

Yes! Even tablespoons.

Aniceempirebiscuitandacupoftea · 22/03/2026 23:36

The French agree with you. Une fourchette and une cuilliere are a female fork and spoon respectively. Un couteau is a male knife.

Beenwhereyouareagain · 22/03/2026 23:24

Big forks - men
Salad forks - boys
Big spoons - women
Small spoons - girls
Knives - elderly men/butlers

That's what I realized while washing dishes in first grade. (1966) My flatware performed water ballet and diving feats. My mother could never figure out why it took so long for me to wash the dishes.

I told my husband about this and he thinks I'm nuts. Stupid fork! 😂😂

Summerbay23 · 22/03/2026 21:44

Never before have I been so glad that I am my own kind of odd.

NotSmallButFunSize · 22/03/2026 21:40

Thursday and October are the same

Mummyratbag · 22/03/2026 21:38

Oh and another thing numbers go up to 12 then turn right and keep going to 112 where they take another 90 degree turn..

CaffeinatedMum · 22/03/2026 21:36

Monday is green
Tuesday bright yellow
Wednesday blue
Thursday dark yellow
Friday red
Saturday pink
Sunday purple

It was revelationary to discover some people don’t see them as this colours, I genuinely just thought everyone must see them this way.

And forks are definitely female and knives male.

@ is purple male or female? That’s what I struggle with!

Female, like a queen.

CoheedandCambria · 22/03/2026 21:14

1 - male
2 - female
3 - female
4 - male
5 - female
6 - female
7 - female
8 - male (despite its curves)
9 - male
10 - male
11 - female (despite being made of 1s which are male!)
12 - female

I could go on

Grin

Fair enough. Purple is female.

Prince made it male.

I was there before him 😉💜

Bigknivesmakemenervous · 22/03/2026 20:56

I'm so jealous of you all I would love to have synesthesia. It sounds wonderful.

I can't remember which composer this was but when he was little and went to concerts he thought the lights were dimmed so everyone could see the colours better.

TheresOnlyOneWayOfLife · 22/03/2026 20:56

First names are either thin/skinny or ‘well rounded/chunky’ names.

NerrSnerr · 22/03/2026 20:47

Forks are female, knives and spoons are male. Monday’s blue, Tuesday’s orange. Thursday is purple, the same as November.

Nofeckingway · 22/03/2026 20:46

Sunday is definitely white or silver because it is shiny . Friday is still sludgy work colours and then Saturday revels itself to be reddish ombre ending in pink .

Teaspoons are for Victorian style ladies . Soup spoons are for peasants . And salad servers are for tossers .

TicklishReader · 22/03/2026 20:42

grumpygrape · 22/03/2026 20:40

Purple is MY COLOUR so is obviously female. HTH

The Bakerloo line is a posh older gent.

It really is! The jubilee line is a city suit, the northern line is a member of an indie band, the Victoria line works in graphic design

angelsofsunset · 22/03/2026 20:36

Monday is blue, Tuesday is yellow, Wednesday is red, Thursday is brown/orangey and Friday is black. Weirdly Sat and Sun dont seem to have a colour

martha79 · 22/03/2026 20:34

PS for me, odd numbers are mostly male and even mostly female but there are some exceptions. 7 is definitely female.

When I was a kid I used to lie in bed running through the alphabet and numbers, seeing each one as its particular gender and personality. Nobody I've spoken to has ever understood but I found the above after some googling a few years ago. You are also absolutely right about the cutlery OP.
