To not understand why my healthy (I think) way of eating isn't making me feel energetic and fabulous

LindyFoo · 22/03/2026 10:17

AIBU to consider this is a healthy daily diet (not looking to lose weight as already a healthy weight). I want to feel more energetic and fabulous :-). Don't eat meat or drink alcohol. In my 60s, fit and well, very minimal stress.

AM
Smoothie with banana, kale, milk, peanut butter, avacado, skimmed milk powder, greek yoghurt
SNACK
Sourdough bread with peanut butter
MIDDAY
2 egg with onion, peppers, cheese and a mixed salad with olive oil dressing
5PM
Salmon with salad or brown rice with prawns and lots of vegetables and spices

What is missing? Or not helping?

She really isn’t.

But she is though peanut butter and sourdough as a snack that would peak anyones sugar levels then she will crash..

Are you feeling low in energy, or are you feeling normal but expecting another level of fabulous energy and vitality just because you are eating well?

You say you are already fit, healthy and unstressed? I'd settle for that. A good diet will hopefully let you continue like that. It's not going to make you into superwoman. It sounds a bit like you've been buying into influencer bullshit claims about how amaaaaazing they feel!

Quite. Honestly the perfect is the enemy of the good here.

Wow! I hadn't expected so many responses - thanks to everyone who's taken the time to respond. To answer a few questions - no idea how many calories I eat as don't count but I'm certainly not aiming for low calorie or to lose weight. The 'fabulous' comment was somewhat tongue in cheek but I would like to feel more lively though I'm not fatigued or ill but could be more active, could drink more water.

About the smoothie for breakfast. I consider this full of goodness and I like to drink it. Although I like oats they give me stomach pains and I couldn't face eggs etc first thing. I could eat toast but wouldn't consider that was nutritious and a good way to start my day.

I dont deprive myself of foods - if I want cake, chocolate etc I have it but generally don't buy it so its not in the house. Might have it when I go out for a coffee. I haven't eaten meat for decades and won't be starting but perhaps need to ensure I'm getting enough from other sources. I could add beans, nuts and seeds to my meals - had forgotten about them.

Have your iron checked by your GP

You’re eating a lot of carbs. It’ll give you an initial energy boost then make you tired a couple of hours later. Where’s the meat? Meat contains all the vitamins you need and it’s bioavailable unlike plants

I was going to say the opposite - not a lot of carbs! I love my carbs too much!

confusedbydating · 22/03/2026 22:56

I would get headaches and feel like I was dying from the lack of carbs in this!

My god.
yhe nonsense advice you are being served up in this chat is making me cringe
my advice is stick this in chatGPT and avoid the armchair nutritionalists on here, some of these comments are batshit

My thoughts exactly and I’ve only got as far as the first few comments.

No, that’s not a lot of carbs. And she has already stated she doesn’t eat meat.

Isinglass20 · 22/03/2026 22:46

Is OPs menu what she eats every day? This suggests someone who sees food as fuel.
I couldn’t eat substantially the same day after day nor miss out a midday meal. I’d worry that I’d get a stomach ulcer, and waking up during the night with hunger pangs. Nor could
I eat sweet stuff for breakfast.

Food is to be enjoyed. I couldn’t be obsessing about it.

Much prefer the Mediterranean style of eating with the emphasis on taste, quality and wide variety enjoyed with a nice glass of wine.

A tv history programme last week in which the presenter was in Puglia walking through a market with stalls with large variety of vegetables, fish, meat, cheese all fresh and all locally produced. None of our supermarket crap.

How could you not eat healthily when you have access to such varied nutritious food?

pouletvous · 22/03/2026 21:55

Add in some crisps and a couple of biscuits; that will improve your mood!

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 22/03/2026 21:45

Are you exercising, meeting friends, having fun? I think these things make you feel good more than flaxseeds etc.

Too many. Carbs are not a good thing. All carbs are heavily processed and refined, and have minimal nutritional value. You can get energy from them, certainly. But you could say that about red bull. Doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

Cutting out carbs is HARD. It’s inconvenient, makes it nearly impossible to eat out or eat anything quick or easy and can make eating feel very joyless. I don’t like it and can only do it sporadically. But I feel a thousand times better without them. They have nothing you need and are not a natural food group. There’s nothing to recommend them but popularity and tradition. We are not designed to survive on them. (But we do, because it’s easy).

What on earth are on about that all carbs are processed??

OP. Have you had a blood test, posters keep asking

AInightingale · 22/03/2026 21:20

Don't understand how these ant-carb fanatics aren't chronically constipated. Don't understand how anyone can afford to eat giant slabs of meat daily either.

Beans, legumes, nuts, brown rice, quinoa, oats and root vegetables are perfectly healthy carbs, and more importantly, cheap.

So much nonsense in this.

I eat 'lower carb', I eat around 70 to 100g of carbs a day (not today, today involved bacon frazzles and some chocolate)

Carbs are things like beans, legumes, vegetables, milk etc, as well as fruit, grains, starches etc.

All containing nutritional value and excellent fibre.

Someone can eat double the carbs I eat and have a perfectlly healthy diet.

This is an absolutely ridiculous post. OP I’d step away from this thread now. Most people on here don’t have a clue what they’re about and they are not qualified to advise you on your dietary needs.

I’d get the blood tests and go from there.

You surely mean not enough carbs!

Good sources of high carbs are potatoes, rice, pasta.

Also carbs are the main source of energy, which OP says they’re lacking in.

Do you take vitamins and minerals OP? Sorry if you've already stated this. I know you are only 60 but I think it's more common to have trouble absorbing B12 (from diet or supplements) as you get older. Surely your GP would run a few bloods if you are continually feeling under par.

How did you get the testosterone?

I had to go private. I needed an expert as my situation is complicated! So I pay ££ for it.

Strikeback · 22/03/2026 20:29

My first thought was also not enough cards. But then no way would I ever give up bread etc. I am not very large but get very hungry with no carbs.

ThisOneLife · 22/03/2026 19:55

PauliesWalnuts · 22/03/2026 10:19

There’s very little fruit in there, so no sugar - either refined or natural - and that gives energy. But I’m no professional so take that with a big pinch of salt (or sugar!).

All carbohydrate is broken down into short chain “sugar” molecules (glucose) so sugar itself is not required in a healthy diet.

pollymere · 22/03/2026 19:55

I'd be looking at more complex carbohydrates. It doesn't have to be every day but pasta or porridge. You are also lacking fruit. Ironically that's quite a sluggish snack and high in fat. I'd probably get rid and wait until lunch then have something mid afternoon when there'll be an energy dip. I used to work in an office where pretty much everyone stopped for a 3pm banana 😂.

How did you get the testosterone?

Ask your GP. They should prescribe it after a blood test to ensure your levels aren't high already

Delatron · 22/03/2026 19:46

I ate very healthily and only felt better once I started HRT (including testosterone) sometimes it’s hormonal. Apologies if you’ve said you’re already on HRT. Just something to think about.

How did you get the testosterone?

RoseField1 · 22/03/2026 19:49

Please stop quoting that long ChatGPT post. Scrolling through it once was annoying enough.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 22/03/2026 18:06

I agree. My GP once told me not to cut out any food groups.

Oh well if some random person's GP said it then it must be true!
