I would like to live in Brighton and Hove

BHASVIC is a non selective state 6th form with some of the best results in the country and is in the top 5 schools for Oxbridge offers… if you care about that sort of thing!

There are some v good schools, plus a few not so good ones (like anywhere?) Brighton, Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College ranks as one of the top-performing non-selective sixth form colleges in the UK.

I spent 5 years in Brighton, I won't do it now. It is not a child-friendly place
Hove is lovely but also not much to do with children, I wouldn't recommend it and i used to love Brighton

This is such nonsense, I dont know where all these visitors to Brighton are hanging out? Not where the residents are it would seem....for a piss and dope free experience I recommend One Garden in Stanmer Park, SeaLanes swimming pool, Hove Seafront, the UnderCliff walk, Beach Box Sauna, the Brighton Festival in May, Artists Open Houses etc.

This made me lol, @Flatandhappy , but only because a former colleague of mine remarked that the only time you can't smell dope in Brighton is when it's overpowered by the smell of piss!

I live a few miles from Brighton, and I agree. "Edgy" is exactly the word for it.

I wouldn't go for a night out in Brighton now. Drunks puking all over the place, fights are pretty routine and it has a lot of stag and hen party people who come down for weekends. A few months ago, I went to a comedy club in Brighton, I got a cab to pick me up from the club and we saw 4 separate fights before we'd even got beyond the city centre. It also has a significant drug problem and a lot of homelessness.

There are still parts of Brighton that are really lovely, even quite close to the centre, but £250k would only get you a 1-bed flat unless you got lucky and found a doer-upper.

A friend has a lovely one-bed converted flat in a nice side road between Preston Park and Withdean Park, so a fair way out of the centre. She had it valued a few months ago: £350k for a 1-bed flat!

TBH the kind of people who rock up on MN to slag off B&H and say it’s ‘dirty’ or whatever aren’t the people we’d want here anyway!
Nebee more proud to be a Brightonian than when the far right rocked up to ‘march’ through the streets and 300 of them found themselves kettled in at the station all day by 4K locals singing and dancing and had to piss if back to what we shitty little towns they’d crawled in from.

I brought up my family here. Moved here when pregant with DC1. Made loads of friends while on maternity leave. Have two teens who love living here. So much for kids to do in Brighton, every kind of club and activity under the sun for every age, fantastic people running the clubs, you could not ask for more. Live in a great community, excellent schools. Downs on our doorstep for the dog. I'm well past my partying years and mostly meet friends for dog walks and swims these days but my older teen enjoys the gigs etc. Brighton feels so much more alive than where I grew up (NorthWest) but gets a lot of hate on mumsnet.

I had the pleasure of working in Steyning… it’s a posh little village with sweet FA going on! A lot of private dentists though, I’ll give it that.

Well Bristol is the most expensive renter city outside of London and it's pretty rough but wonderful. I guess with these more liberal places you get more leniency with drugs etc and are more likely to attract a variety of hmmm characters I'd say. Anyway Brighton is great my SIL lived there for years and wants to move back. A fun city with great food and entertainment

This is why these kinds of threads, while interesting, don’t help the OP to make a decision because we’re all different, and where a person enjoys living comes down to their lifestyle and personality more than anything.

I love living in Worthing. I am aware of its flaws, but its pros outweigh its cons for me and I have no desire to live elsewhere. I wouldn’t want to live in Brighton because it’s too busy and too hectic; I like a quiet life and I like the fact that I sometimes get my local beach all to myself, even on summer evenings! We live 500m from the beach- no way in the world we could afford that in Brighton.

How rude and ill-informed!

We lived in Brighton for many years, three kids born there, always said I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in England. It was funky and fun, we felt really lucky. We have been in Sydney 20 years now and went back to Brighton last year, omg what an absolute dump. Absolutely filthy, everywhere stinks of dope, I felt unsafe on the streets at night which I had never done before. DD (now an adult) was horrified that it was where she was born. You couldn’t pay me to live there now which is so sad as it really was quite special. I think there must be much nicer places to live by the sea these days.

Your generalising when you say people in Brighton are nice. I bet there's some horrible people in Brighton.
On another note the football team are riding high.

Brighton is a great city if you’re the kind of person who wants a city with a lot of outdoors. The outdoor 50m pool & sauna/s on the beach, the outdoor cafe culture, being able to run along miles of seafront , or up into the hills.
Some people may not like things like the month long arts festival, the new bands festival, the kids parade, the slightly crackers solstice stuff, the music events, Pride, the beach festivals, the old car London to Brighton runs, the charity bike rides, the naked bike ride, the fact that you sometimes see people wandering about dressed in Steam punks gear or as Victorians or clowns for no apparent reason, but we quite like it.

I live here and walk down the high street most days. It’s fine.

Love it here. Brought my family up here and it has so much to offer.
There are the usual social problems, it’s very liberal so attracts a lot of homeless etc but violence in that community is broadly contained within it.
I feel safe and my older teens do too.
you might get a flat with a balcony for £250k but not a house.
Personally I wouldn’t want to live in Worthing!

Bless. There’s F all going on in Steyning, pretty though it may be and it’s full of Tories. Which may be your thing, OP - if so you just have to travel a little East or West of Brighton and it’s chocko block with Tories and Reformers

Portslade or Peacehaven way much cheaper and still close by… or get something that needs work? Brighton is a fab place to live, we go to the beach daily, swim, walk, the downs are easy to get to, schools are decent, there’s always music or arty stuff to go to, people are genuinely live & let live, it’s all v walkable and safe for kids to walk around. Our young teens can get everywhere they need to go to on foot or by bike or by bus.

FILTH is the answer!

May I recommend Littlehampton, just a little further past Worthing and far cheaper than Brighton without all the hustle and bustle
