DP says I'd look younger with hair and make-up, AIBU?

I’ve been out this evening and was chatting to two much older men (70s/80s) that I’ve known for some time. My age was mentioned along the lines of “well you’re younger than my youngest son, and he’s 44. You’re about 42 aren’t you?”

As a soon to be 48 year old who runs on 4 hours sleep with 2 young children and a full-on job, I was pleased with the compliment…

…until I told my DP, who thought about it and said “just imagine if you did your hair and make-up, you’d look maybe 37”.

How would take that comment from your DP?

Some very, very peculiar people on this thread. And probably many with very few friends.
Which ones are those? Are you now not only equating not wearing make-up with not caring about your appearance but also with not having friends?

I'm not the one judging women as lacking in effort and failing to present themselves well because they don't know eyebrow combs exist.

FlingoFlamingo · 22/03/2026 20:01

@godmum56of course I comb my eyebrows, with a special little eyebrow comb. They’re lovely eyebrows too. Very fond of them.

DS, without gel, has fluffy hair. At 11 years old, he gels his hair himself. He also wears contact lenses because he doesn’t like his glasses. The contacts came about as he plays rugby. He cares about how he looks and presents, and I’m very pleased.

He is heading for grammar school, and trust me - appearances are important.

Dare I tell you that my DD age 4 has her own perfume? She has a strong preference for Dior, but sometimes likes her Sol de Janeiro body spray.

Make up can be great, fun, useful, etc but let’s also admit that we’re socially conditioned to think women look better with it on, while also to think that it doesn’t suit men. That’s only because we’re not used to seeing men in make up, any more than we think men look great in tights and high heels to show off their shapely legs. Makeup (and hair) is an expectation on women that men don’t have, and we should admit that’s the case and that women may face prejudice or discrimination if they attend a work meeting without makeup or with a shirt that’s a bit snug. Brian from accounts is never told to smarten up and put some corrective foundation on his face and lose a few pounds if he wants to be taken seriously at work.

Disclaimer: sometimes I wear makeup and sometimes I don’t. I don’t even own an iron, let alone use one (although I can).

EmeraldShamrock000 · 22/03/2026 19:06

I would love to wear a face of makeup and neat stylish hair everyday but I just can’t be bothered.
Clean face, clean hands, hair brushed. Job done.
Hopefully one day I will feel inspired to give a shit.

I think you might need to re read the thread! There are plenty of anti makeup commenters on here accusing women of being ‘hostages to the world’s expectations’ and telling us our children need to ‘ignore this nonsense’. I’m happy to accept not all women want to wear makeup but there’s no need to judge those that do.

There's no anti make up comments. There's anti the "fact" that women should all wear it. No we shouldn't!!

it was me who said ignore this nonsense by which I meant that it is seen as an expectation rather than a choice. I have also said that people should of course do whatever they chose with their own bodies.

In what way is not wearing makeup "masculine"?
What a weird way to think

"I don't understand the anti makeup brigade. What exactly is wrong with makeup. Is it because some women believe we should be ditching everything classified as overly feminine. A belief we should adopt a more masculine appearance in order to appear more powerful & give men the impression we don't care about looks. 🤔"

definitely weird. I don't think that anyone on here has said they are anti makeup, just that they choose not to use it for many reasons.

I’ll never understand the militant anti-make mindset, just do whatever you want to do and stop judging other women.

Choosing not to wear makeup does not make you morally superior, or a better feminist, or whatever.

I love the stuff, wear it every day, don’t give a flying fuck what anyone else does

Fabulous. Nobody on the thread fits any of your description.

Nobody has been anti make-up at all let alone virulently. The only anti is against the unpleasant viewpoint put across that not wearing any is failing to present yourself in your best way and that anyone's bare face looks unprofessional or unattractive as a dinner companion.

I was like this for years but as I got older I started to really resent being a hostage to the world's expectations of what women "should" look like.
Free yourself. It feels great.

See comments like this are being deliberately goady. You might find it freeing to go without makeup but not everyone does. I grew up in a very strict religious household where makeup was pretty much banned so I find it liberating to wear makeup. Each to their own.

ElenOfTheWays · 22/03/2026 14:26

thefloorislavayes · 20/03/2026 14:25

I suppose it does depend, I usually get the opposite, I’m in my 40s as well and always get ID-ed when wearing makeup but never do when natural

Oh there's no doubt about it. Past a "certain age" makeup can be quite ageing. I look less "pretty"* without it but perversely a lot younger.

*according to society's standards.

I don't wear makeup day to day although I've recently started to wear light eyeliner & concealer because it makes me look & feel more alive. I go full face (not heavy)on nights out though again because it makes me feel better.

Your partner is right.
Hair and make-up done right always make you look better.
I do my face every morning, even if I'm not going out, and it takes two minutes.
I keep my hair styled and get it cut every four weeks.

Lot of people on this thread framing his answer as "just being honest"
No! He was fucking rude. I mean, who asked him? And let's face it, he was "negging" her as they say. I wonder if he behaves like this a lot.

Sartre · 22/03/2026 13:19

Unnecessary and bitchy comment, it actually sounds like he’s jealous the men were nice to you even though they were elderly so shouldn’t be a threat!

We all know most people look better with a bit of make up and their hair done but it’s just the same as most men looking better with facial hair (it really is like their version of make up- look at Jason Mamoa without…)

cardibach · 22/03/2026 12:34

@TheSnootiestFox does your husband expect you to sit and look at a bare face if you are out? Why is that acceptable but not the other way round?

Charity322 · 22/03/2026 12:30

TheSnootiestFox · 20/03/2026 13:09

Gosh, you do you and go and burn your bra or whatever. I consider scruffy men and women rude and in the workplace, unprofessional. When I'm at the gym, the stables or working in the garden then of course I look different but I certainly wouldn't expect my partner to sit and look at a bare face if we were out, for example.

I'll leave you to plait your armpit hair, shall I?

Doesn't plaiting armpit hair count as making yourself up? XD

I’m struggling with this - most people look better with their hair and makeup done. I rarely wear a full face of makeup but my hair is always styled and basic face done. I confess that I don’t understand why people don’t make an effort to look somewhat put together.

And I don't understand why some people don't have better things to do with their precious time, so 🙄

you make your son gel his hair????????

It really is evidence that opinions on what constitutes smart or groomed or made an effort or however you want to describe it is. Because I'm just as incredulous as you. In my opinion no child with gelled hair will look good.

Men don’t traditionally wear makeup.

He does put on lip balm - Vaseline, occasionally, as he looks better with well moisturised lips. He also has a vast collection of facial moisturisers.

He also brushes and trims his eyebrows. He cares about how he looks. He likes to ensure his face is well groomed, so he trims it. I don’t have to, being female. We each do our bit.

I’ll also add - my “basic face” is combed through eyebrows, a swipe of mascara and some tinted lip balm. It makes me look healthy. I wear the entire shebang of the makeup bag maybe 3 times a year.

OMG you comb your eyebrows????

I’m aware that make up is tradition. For women. I’m trying to establish why you feel women need to follow this tradition in order to not look scruffy when men have not traditionally done so. Why do your eyelashes and lips need things his don’t?

FlingoFlamingo · 21/03/2026 17:14

@cardibach where did I say women?

My husband looks dreadful when his hair isn’t done and his beard isn’t trimmed down. He looks better when he has his contacts in, opposed to when he wears his glasses.

He looks better in a suit than he does his grass cutting joggers.

Dearie me. Anyway.. I don’t care about impressing men, but I urge my children to be clean, tidy and well dressed. I make sure my daughter’s hair is clean, styled and her clothes are nice. My son with his hair gelled. Why? First impressions are important, both socially and professionally.

We are not homeless.

I was being kind earlier, I really was. For those of you who don’t want to look your best, all power to you - but you’d look a lot better if you tried a little bit. Promise.

you make your son gel his hair????????

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 20/03/2026 11:13

I wouldn’t take it badly. It was said off the back of a compliment that you looked younger without doing anything that lots of other women do to try to look younger. It’s a bit like him saying, imagine if you did all the witchcraft other women do with contouring and god knows what - you’d look even younger.

We all know that well-applied makeup / colouring greys etc etc makes us look better than if we don’t do it. I’m sure someone out there will reply ‘I look younger with grey hair and no lipliner evening out my thinning lips and no blusher placed higher on my cheeks to give the illusion of fuller cheeks’ but I just don’t buy that at all. Objectively, these products conceal things so we look better and it’s simply an honest observation in line with the context of the conversation

I think what your husband said is a million miles from lying in bed with a man who says, ‘I’d fancy you more if you wore makeup’ or who prods your love handles.

But not everyone cares about looking younger. I'd also say that "better" is a very subjective judgement. I don't normally say stuff like this but I really think its what women have been conditioned to do and to believe. I know its a trope but how many men think like this? Its kind of cognitively odd. I would never say that people shouldn't do what they want to do with their bodies and saying "I do it because I feel better is of course completely reasonable....but what? did you feel bad about how you looked before? Who or what made you feel like that?
