to hate the way the chefs on Masterchef always say 'plate of food' instead of just 'food' or 'dish'?
I HATE IT.

Teaming a bootcut jean with a low heeled boot and a red lip. So half dressed then?

They're an accommodating trouser.

I heard that today! She said it almost after every sentence. Why would her banal, normal sentences not make sense. She wasn't describing nuclear fission.

Like on MN when someone explains something very simple and puts IYSWIM? at the end. As if they are sooooo complex.

ACIGC · 20/03/2026 12:31

But it is a plate of food. It's a plate. With food on.

Though this made me think that maybe when they do something silly like serve it on a palm leaf Marcus should send it back saying "No we asked for a PLATE OF FOOD"

Whatapantomime · 20/03/2026 12:29

James Martin has a very annoying habit of saying “a litte bit of” for almost every ingredient he throws in the pan …… except his notoriously generous helpings of butter which are never “a little bit of” at all 🥴

Glittertwins · 20/03/2026 12:28

I was about to say similar @likelysuspect!

HelpMeGetThrough · 20/03/2026 12:25

Malasana · 20/03/2026 11:15

My peeve is when something is described as “pan fried”. What else is it going to be fried in? A washing up bowl? 🤣

Fusion cooking. That would be an extra 50 quid in a restaurant.

likelysuspect · 20/03/2026 12:22

pineapplecrushed · 20/03/2026 00:04

Masterchef in the 90s used dish, dessert, main, starter, pudding, side, food, meal...... 'plate of food' is pretentious and just sounds silly. It's like saying 'glass of beverage'.

Oh my god what are you giving them ideas for?

I fry my plates of food when doing the cookery, in my tumble dryer.

I HATE IT.

Yes and why do they never just say 'a nice dinner'

Or 'my tea'

KellyJonesLeatherTrousers · 20/03/2026 12:18

Feels like we could have a Masterchef bingo card, winner gets to have a nice plate of food. I propose ‘running through it’ to be on there- its always a flavour running through it’ used to describe EVERY dish.

ObelixtheGaul · 20/03/2026 12:16

Haven't watched it for a few years, but used to hate the critics saying the food 'eats well'. 'Eat' is a verb. The food is not the one doing the eating.

wishingonastar101 · 20/03/2026 12:11

on masterchef its "that is great cookery" what, no one says that... you mean "great cooking"

NotAWurstToIt · 20/03/2026 11:45

And back to football commentators “I think that should have been a pen”. Penalty - say the full word you wanker!

Or a "shoe" - just the one shoe please 🙄

The S&B forum toffs on here get me with their “pieces”. “I need to get some new pieces for the summer.”

No, you need to get clothes mate, you know T-shirts, shorts and whatever else. Pretentious wankery.

Me too on the Woman’s Hour ‘does that make sense’ rage! I know shouting at the radio is a cliche but I was that person today.

Yeah I shouted and then switched it off, I thought I was tetchy but seemingly not

I am eagerly awaiting the Ghosts film, although experience tells me that films of sitcoms rarely work out so I am hoping that this is one the rare exceptions! Also, have you seen Bill by the same team? Very very underated and brilliant!

I'm looking forward to it too, really hope that it works and isn't a let down. Going to give Bill a watch too, thank you for the reccomendation.

pineapplecrushed · 20/03/2026 00:04

Dollymylove · 19/03/2026 22:31

What's wrong with saying a plate of food?
Unless they are serving it in a bowler hat 🤣🤣

Just had a watch, so funny! I love the horrible histories / ghosts shows but had completely missed this.

Watch the Historical Masterchef on Horrible Histories (think they are on Youtube). Totally takes the piss out of the "plate of food" and also the way that Greg Nonce and John Torrode would eat the food.

8 had to switch womans hour earlier because the guest kept saying ' if that makes sense?' after every sentence. So annoying

Grandmashorty · 19/03/2026 23:11

I noticed this and it annoyed me too. A nice dessert was labelled as a plate of food - no, it’s a small dessert!

nevernotmaybe · 19/03/2026 23:06

Drippingfeed · 19/03/2026 22:45

You were annoyed, not "triggered" fgs. Use the term properly or not at all.

There are other terms that exist, such as hyperbole for the figurative expression of a strong feeling.
