to hate the way the chefs on Masterchef always say 'plate of food' instead of just 'food' or 'dish'?
I HATE IT.

A knicker?

Haha even better! Or maybe an underpant!

Teaming a bootcut jean with a low heeled boot and a red lip. So half dressed then?

I'm just waiting for a tight!

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 20/03/2026 14:49

I agree OP. My eldest DD hates it when my DH says the "meal table" when it's not just a dining table, it's my desk too 😅

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/03/2026 14:48

For cookery programmes it's always "my shepherd s pie" or "my coffee and walnut cake". What have they done to make it "my"?
And when someone being interviewed starts very bloody sentence with "So"

What triggers me is the shot of an octopus tentacle being smacked on a hot grill in the intro.
Eating octopus is wrong, morally, but it also looks disgusting.

Edited

I’m actually scared to eat octopus. I envision the suckers sucking onto my tongue. 🤢

I could never watch Mastermind with Magnus Magnusson because of the way he said 'correct'. Was like nails down a blackboard.

Funny what comes along that annoys us for no good reason!

Ooops, I had that with Countdown, "vowel, vowel, continent, vowel, continent". My gran and I used to throw stuff at them.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 20/03/2026 14:29

The phrase thats getting on my tit's atm is when a crime against a person has been committed, and someone charged, they say the "alleged victim". They are the victim. That's it.

Please leave Jay cloth Rayner out of this, he's great 😊

He should market Jay Rayner Masterchef Jay cloths.

While we're here "mouth feel" can do one! "The tapioca pearls have a lovely mouth feel" 😂
And they put their fingers bloody everywhere! That venison could be dusted for fingerprints, mate!
And it takes so long to 'plate up', that half the food must be stone cold before it gets sampled. And I bet they're not gonna zap in the micro-wah-vay for 30 seconds!

'Mouth feel' makes me want to heave

My peeve is when something is described as “pan fried”. What else is it going to be fried in? A washing up bowl? 🤣

To be fair, I think it's intended to distinguish it from food that's been deep-fried. But I think it's only really necessary to make that distinction when it's something that could easily be cooked either way, like chicken or a fillet of cod. 'Pan-fried' definitely feels redundant when it's, eg, bacon or some carrots.

Isseywith2witchycats · 20/03/2026 14:03

There's a utuber who's been doing visiting holocaust locations and in one instead of saying house he says ouse and my teeth grate every time he does it

Breadcat24 · 20/03/2026 13:41

Could not agree with you more about “mouth feel.” It’s a fucking texture. It’s texture whether you feel it with your hands or your mouth or anything else. But “mouth feel” just always makes me think of these emojis: 👁️ 👄 👁️ Maybe because then it both looks AND sounds alien… imagine… new Masterchef host from a far galaxy off Saturn’s left side…

👁️ 👄 👁️: “I just loved the mouth feel.”

Masterchef in the 90s used dish, dessert, main, starter, pudding, side, food, meal...... 'plate of food' is pretentious and just sounds silly. It's like saying 'glass of beverage'.

OP, I often feel the same way, so I think you would absolutely love WeWantPlates (just Google it - there’s a subreddit, but probably Facebook groups and Instagram accounts too). It’s people sharing photos of the super pretentious non-plate (and often useless) ways they have been served food - burger on a fucking log! Fish and chips in a fucking shovel! Bacon hung with clips like the washing! So beyond ridiculous and really helps to laugh at it.

When it comes to Masterchef it wouldn't surprise me if they used a repurposed shield they claim was used by Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth and gifted to their nan after she knitted him a natty bobble hat.

I fry my plates of food when doing the cookery, in my tumble dryer.

Great idea! Thanks for the tip 🤣
